It's pretty miserable walking around here with even a cotton scarf on top of a mop of dark hair on a hot day. It comes out of the Middle Eastern environment I live in and it's not too long ago that my Sephardi/Mizrach ancestors were walking around in similar garb. The plus side for me is that because it goes with sandal wearing, I can get away with those in the heat. I could NOT believe seeing women in long black skirts, long sleeved blouse and a PONCHO to disguise their form in the Jerusalem heat. However, the sidewalk thing was blown out of proportion by the media. I was in Mea Shearim last week and no one made me move off the sidewalk. I rode the regular mixed bus to Hevron and there was no problem. It is the Eastern European Ultra Orthodox who have adapted Sharia law. LOL but it is disturbing that these men are so insecure and lout of control that they expect us to be responsible for their libidos. Then they try to tell us it's for our own spiritual betterment because Hashem commands it. Well, let me tell you, we had some untypical weather a couple of weeks ago. Close to 100º during the day. I had to go out so the scarf came off. No way would I have survived out there. G-d didn't strike me down and I don't feel that I've lost my shot at Heaven if I go before next Yom Kippur. You have to use common sense because I wasn't raised in this heat or with these standards. I have to say, as someone who was not always religious and who attracted more than her share of attention, I feel more free now that I am covered. I can go take pictures and get in odd positions without worrying if I'm pulling a "Britney" or if the "wind" is going to embarrass me.Ok, so the Muslimas aren't the better athletes? Lets see you try to do anything in a long skirt. I hear women asking to be allowed to wear pants because skirts are restricting. Fooey! Except for running machinery where there's a safety factor, We can do anything in a skirt we need to. Our grandmothers did and our "ancestresses" certainly did. Check out pictures of pioneer women in America. But I admit, it's a learned skill.

HI SK, well, I wouldn’t walk around in a abeya but a colorful caftan in 90º plus is cool and serves the purpose. This Muslim clothing is indecency itself, as it is an advertisement for Mo, the mouthpiece of Amalek.Oh, and the muslimas are NOT better athletes than the American women. And, as others have said, the point of this article was to celebrate political freedom and juxtapose it to tyranny. Finally, as a poster has mentioned Israel, I should admit that the Muslim influence on the Haredim (ultra-Orthodox) in Israel concerns me. In some areas, it seems that men and women now are expected to walk on opposite sides of the street. We are not to be like the gentiles, and that surely includes the Muslims.

It’s kind of amazing that some Orthodox Jews here are admiring the muslimas’ clothing, given that it would be inappropriate for modest Jewish women. This is one reason why the Virgin Mary was so great. Because she was a conservative, modest virgin, who did not want her body to be seen by men. Not a half naked whore. The point I was making was that we don't portray her wearing a sports bra because the Virgin Mary would have never done so, even if she were living today because she was a very modest woman. So actually, she has a lot to do with the way Muslim women dress, because they use her as a role model...

Women like the Virgin Mary dressed the way they did 2000 years ago because people then understood that women were supposed to be more modest and conservative. Some try it here in Israel, but we have the Orthodox, not the ultras who are almost as bad as their "cousins" on this matter, but regular Orthodox like myself holding up the other end.
It has become so that a woman in your society cannot choose to be modest. Orthodox Jewish women who have to be in the work force are in a difficult position. If married, we are required to cover our heads too. We also should wear longer skirts and modest necklines. More closed than what is considered modest in the US.
This isn't the forum to go into details but our style of dress may be see to be "frumpy" and that affects our ability to get jobs or promotions. I'm not saying it IS frumpy but may be perceived as such but the nonJewish secular public. A young law student was telling me she HAS to wear fashionable length skirts in court because of the "frump factor." It looks weak and ineffectual.
If I wore my head scarf and my long skirt, even stylishly cut in court, how many cases do you think I would win? Hypothetically, I mean. I'm not a lawyer.

John, you do make some good points but in your society, bikinis and sexuality are lifted up. Aslo Mary lived over 2 thousand years and dressed like all religious Jewish women dressed. It had nothing to do with the female anatomy being too tempting to muslim men that it has to be covered. Despite all of this cover-up with ugly garments, rape is still high in muslim majority nations.

The Blessed Mother has nothing to do with how muslim females dress. The idea is that the women in the first picture are forced to dress like that.In America and other countries, if women want to wear bikinis, they will not have their fingernails ripped out or be executed in a public square. Modesty or not, women playing beach volleyball in bathing suits will be ogled, but not killed. This can be done in America for now. Europe is fast becoming another Muslim fever swamp. And if we don't watch it, so will America. But with the latest Islamic-inspired killings, maybe the time is shorter than we thought.Modesty is a good thing, but it should be us, who must self-regulate it. We've already given many of our freedoms away, let's not let someone else dictate modesty. Especially Islam.Even though we abuse this, G-d is forgiving. Islam, Muslims, and Allah do not forgive.-- Jew-honoring Goyim who supports Israel. :-)

The point of the post is not that skimpy bikinis are lifted up and glorified.
