Common sense would dictate that having a child out of wedlock should be enough to keep a woman out of the ranks in the first place for conduct unbecoming. The baby daddy has a responsibility to take custody. If he's a druggy or something like that obviously you can't use him but to excuse her is not responsible. This was meant to bring the fact that when you go to war your family is the people serving with you. If you can't do the duty, then don't volunteer for the Service! I'm active duty (15+ years) and a new mom. I have the support of a loving civilian husband to take the reigns in the event I deploy again. Single parents are treated as welfare recipients, getting priority over me for the few on-post daycare slots (I may never get my daughter in) much lower tuition rates and possibly even qualify for free baby formula. They're being rewarded for being irresponsible in their personal lives. Sadly, too, not enough commanders verify their family care plans until it comes time to deploy because they feel sorry for the Soldiers when they should be looking out for the best interests of the Army and good order and discipline in the ranks. While I feel really bad for the Soldier in this case, the Army is no place for her or her child and she needs to find another line of work so she can make motherhood her priority.
