Premature Articulation: The REAL Jill Carroll for Jimmy Carter Geraghty and Others w/Reading Comprehension Deficiencies

By Debbie Schlussel
Here’s a note to you bloggers–especially the suddenly blind conservative ones–who want Jill Carroll to be what she is not. Please read it VERY CAREFULLY and S-L-O-W-L-Y, as some of you seem to have premature articulation and reading comprehension problems (that includes National Review Online’s Jim Geraghty a/k/a “Jimmy Carter Geraghty,” so nicknamed for his apparent propensity to ignore truths about pro-Islamists when they are right in his face):
Over the last few months, since Jill Carroll was kidnapped and upon her release, I posted her REAL views (here and here). They remain her views, and she has NOT denied or disavowed them. I never once cited a video that was made in captivity, as others did and as others are now claiming I owe an apology for. I do not. They owe me an apology for projecting the video onto my work. And for pretending to be able to read, when clearly they cannot.
The facts remain the same, as do the unfortunate, continuing plagues of blindness, deafness, and dumbness that have struck all of those who have some bizarre fantasy about their new unworthy heroine, a far-left “journalist,” Jill Carroll.

Facts Are Stubborn Things: Jill Carroll’s Extremist Friends, Views NOT Refuted

Jill Carroll was a close friend of the late Code Pinko Marla Ruzicka a/k/a “Treasonatrix Barbie.” Ruzicka’s group helped raise money for Islamic insurgents in Fallujah who burnt our contractors to a crisp. They also raised money for Palestinian terrorists in Gaza and the West Bank. You can tell a lot about a person by the company she keeps. And that was with whom Jill Carroll kept company.
Then, there’s Jill Carroll’s former employer, the anti-Semitic, anti-American Jordan Times (for whom she CHOSE to work), long ago made the following statement about her (which, to date, she has NEVER contradicted or disavowed):

The kidnappers who abducted her could not have chosen a more wrong target. True, Jill is a US citizen. But she is also more critical of US policies towards the Middle East than many Arabs. . . . Jill has been from day one opposed to the war, to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
More than just being sympathetic with average Iraqis under war and occupation, Jill is a true believer in Arab causes.
From Arabic food to the Arabic language, Jill has always wanted to know and experience as much as possible about Arab identity, and she is keen on absorbing it, learning, understanding and respecting it.
She doesn’t just “like” Arab culture, she loves it. . . . It is simply unconscionable for any Arab to want to harm a person like her.

Again, neither of these things has anything to do with the video Jill Carroll made. Nada. Zippo. And yet, Jill Carroll has not provided any evidence to the contrary. Because there is none. Facts are stubborn things.
It’s a shame I’ve had to post this THREE times, and yet it still doesn’t sink in for quite a few of you. It’s not rocket science, people.
Then, there are the radical U.S.-based Islamist groups I wrote about, which spent a ton of time, effort, and resources to get Jill Carroll released. They are groups like LIFE for Relief and Development (which gave millions to HAMAS and is believed to be funding Iraqi insurgents), HAMAS-front group CAIR, and the rabidly anti-Semitic, pro-HAMAS/Hezbollah Congress of Arab American Organizations and American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.
These groups were nowhere to be seen for the following U.S. hostages, some of whom have since been murdered, but some of whom remain alive: Tom Fox, Ronald Schulz, Jack Hensley, Eugene (Jack) Armstrong, Nicholas Berg, Jeffrey Ake, Sadeq Mohammed Sadeq, Aban Elias, and Keith Maupin.
Not a peep out of the American Islamist groups for them, even the two Arab-American ones (Sadeq and Elias).
So ask yourself–ye blind worshippers of Jill Carroll–why did these rabidly Islamist groups in the U.S. go out on a limb for Jill Carroll, and no-one else? So, Jimmy Carter Geraghty and others, I’m waiting for your answer. But I know one will never be forthcoming. (As for Jim, his e-mail address indicates he’s in Turkey, so perhaps he, too, like Jill Carroll is writing “in captivity,” or perhaps he’s seen “Kurtlar Vadisi – Irak” one too many times.)
To sum up, I never cited the video, but I did cite these 3 heretofore unrebutted facts (her recanting of the video notwithstanding):
1) Jill Carroll worked, by her choice, for an Islamist newspaper that said she shares its anti-American, anti-Israel views (no reason to doubt that, she worked for them by her choice);
2) Jill Carroll was close friends with an American who worked for Code Pink (funding and helping terrorists);
3) Jill Carroll was unique among ALL American hostages in Iraq in getting the mammoth effort by U.S. Islamist groups (all of whom support terrorists and oppose the war in Iraq) to secure her release. They know what she stands for.
And it should be obvious to you, too.
As for any calls for an apology, the apology is owed to ME by all the premature articulators out there who didn’t read closely and falsely claimed I cited the video. I did not.
Jill Carroll’s views and Islamist, terror-supporting friends in the U.S. remain the same. Time for all of you to get LASIK so you finally see it.

Debbie, Jill Carrol did not only recant what she said in the video, but also what she said in the interview shortly after her release, which you did reference.
She said, “I also gave a TV interview to the Iraqi Islamic Party shortly after my release. The party had promised me the interview would never be aired on television, and broke their word. At any rate, fearing retribution from my captors, I did not speak freely. Out of fear I said I wasn’t threatened. In fact, I was threatened many times.”
After this interview was released, you said, “But hey, she says her Islamic terrorist captors treated her “very well,” and she talked about the nice shower and bathroom they gave her.”
So you still owe an apology for wagging your finger at her for saying her captors treated her well when she still feared for her life.
OOPS! THOUGHT WE WARDED OFF THE NON-READERS. BUT GUESS NOT. THE FACT IS THE FOCUS OF MY WORK WAS HER VIEWS AS DESCRIBED BY HER FORMER EMPLOYER, HER CHOICE OF FORMER EMPLOYER, HER CHOICE OF CLOSE FRIEND, AND HER CHOICE OF ALLIES IN THE U.S. (AS WELL AS THEIR CHOICE OF HER AS A CAUSE AMONG ALL OTHER HOSTAGES). WHEN DID SHE RECANT OR DISAVOW THOSE? NEVER.
SO LOOK IN THE MIRROR, BUDDY. I OWE AN APOLOGY TO NO-ONE. BUT YOU DO . . . TO ME. OH, AND BY THE WAY, WHY WON’T SHE CALL HER CAPTORS “TERRORISTS”? ARE THEY NOT? ALSO, GET A CLUE: WHAT ARE THE EDITORIAL VIEWS OF THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR? HAS SHE DENOUNCED THOSE?

Well said Debbie. Carroll is indicted on her own track record of anti-americanism and anti-semitism and you have nothing to apologise for.

Debbie, let’s meet at Starbucks.

shleppy on April 2, 2006 at 5:59 pm

Debbie, since we’re all into demanding appy polly loggies from each other – because, apparently, righteous indignation is so much more fun than dry reason – how about APOLOGIZING TO ME PERSONALLY FOR YOUR INDISCRIMINATE USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS?
A bit more seriously, your demand that someone released from captivity 24 – 48 hours ago must use only Debbie-approved words to describe her captors (“criminals at best” isn’t sufficient; she must call them terrorists), and your additional demand that Carroll denounce the Christain Science Monitor as a bunch of IslamoFascist sympathizers, seem to be a reductio ad absurdum of your previous evidentially thin denunciations.
With this kind of verbal conduct, plus your name-calling (it isn’t nice to call people Jimmy Carter), you’re just beating yourself up. In public.

BCrago66 on April 2, 2006 at 6:57 pm

BCrago66,are you Jill’s literary agent?Pimp?Photographer from Penthouse?John Walker Lindh made statements similar to Jill baby, after he was picked up for joining the Taliban, after growing up in San Francisco.Nobody kidnapped Carroll to go to Jordan-and “the terrorists” didn’t kidnap her into “captivity”.They sent her an invitation.

jaywilton on April 2, 2006 at 7:17 pm

It seems to me that because you don’t like Carroll, so you think it’s OK or funny to call her a whore (by suggesting that I’m her Pimp or Penthouse photographer.) I know (or I think) that’s not meant to be taken literally, but to be honest, I don’t see what the point is, other than a satisfying expression of venom on your part. Call me crazy, but I don’t take it as a sign of Olympian character to call woman we don’t like whores.
I admit to not knowing too much about Carroll, but by the law of probobility it’s likely that because she’s a young journalist, she’s on the liberal to lefty side of the ideological spectrum. But to go from there to the evidence-free assertion (and I’ve read what Debbie said on the subject) that she’s a traitor of the John Walker Lindh variety (or, for that matter, a terrorist sympathizer of “Christian Peace Activists” variety) is a libel (though not an actionable one.)
There are people in the West who sympathize with the enemy, and I’ve named a couple examples in the preceding paragraph. But I’m suspicious of those who would make that accusation without evidence. Because when we becaome unmoored from reason, almost anything can happen.
Example: Andrew Sullivan used to call every other person a fifth columnist. Then he switched to the other side, and delights in undercutting the war against Islamic radicalism. The only constant here is unregulated emotion.

BCrago66 on April 2, 2006 at 7:35 pm

I don’t plan on apologizing for my criticism of Jill until I hear something different from her. I won’t hold my breath.

John Sobieski on April 2, 2006 at 9:28 pm

jill bryant, “Wow – you kind of jump from assertion A to W, don’t you?”
If I needed a true example of that, your post sure proved it, “jill.” Maybe this, maybe that, perhaps this, blah blah blah. Maybe OJ really was innocent since I wasn’t right there at the time it happened. Perhaps space aliens bombed the World Trade Towers since I wasn’t in a cave with bin Laden and gang when they plotted it.
Since you people think it’s such a virtue to dissent re: President Bush and the war, I am dissenting from the Saint Jill Carrollites. I feel SO SUPERIOR and righteous now. You lefties are so right, dissent is good and we don’t have to apologize. I love it!

The_Man on April 2, 2006 at 10:11 pm

Ms. Schlussel:
You still missed the point! You should’ve been grateful that Ms. Carroll was released unharmed. Please refrain from your “Ad Hominem” attacks on people like Jill Carroll and readers of your blog.

Marc on April 2, 2006 at 11:40 pm

Marc,
Are you just as myopic to the facts as all the Jill Carroll apologists out there? Facts are in deed STUBBORN THINGS. Jill Carroll already made her bed out of 1200 thread count, anti-Israeli fabric way before she was “kidnapped”. I don’t trust the mainstream media, and I find the freelance mainstream even less credulous than their card-carrying, full-time emplyed bretheren.

Yiddish Steel on April 2, 2006 at 11:59 pm

I’m starting to think Jill was never kidnapped, to begin with. She could have faked the whole event to get on the front news for a few weeks, and rake in a few million bucks by way of publicity for herself and her islamist friends.
Everything Debbie said was true and nothing was heresay. Those so-called conservative premature ejaculators, oops, articulators might learn to do some reading before passing undeserved nasty comments on Debbie.

anonymous twit on April 3, 2006 at 12:12 am

Many comments here show reading comprehension problems. Debbie Sch. has amply documented the real Jill Carroll. Has Jill’s captivity changed her? Perhaps, but her track record is clear. She has been a Muslim Arab sympathizer for years.
Deb. You are wrong to link her to Marla Ruzicka who was honest and good at the end of her life. The US troops liked her

Yo,bcrag066;I still think I have a pretty good bet that an investigation would show that there is little difference between Lindh and Carroll.Beyond that, you have disregarded all evidence shown here (aside from video evidence)-and you refuse to acknowledge that she was invited to the party(whoops-”kidnapped”)by terrorists. Are you “in captivity”?.

jaywilton on April 3, 2006 at 8:44 am

Forget your stupid demands for an apology. You people demanding that should apologize for being childish beyond belief.
Oh!, you will get on here and proclaim how evil people here are saying you can’t protest and dissent. Then, Marc posts, “Please refrain from your “Ad Hominem” attacks on people like Jill Carroll and readers of your blog.”
It’s Debbie (and others) do this, Debbie don’t do that! In other words, “do as I say, not as I do.” It’s free speech when you oppose Debbie, Bush, and your pet causes, but when someone is on the other side you are hateful, inhuman, etc.

Jeff_W on April 3, 2006 at 9:31 am

Debbie wins again! But it looks like a few stubborn LIEberals won’t admit defeat. Still, it looks like the majority of the LIEberals that posted comments in the other article are too ashamed for being wrong that they don’t even have the decency to come into this article and apologize. Typical LIEberals.

Concerned Conservative on April 3, 2006 at 11:04 am

I always thought a good journalist was good at making interviewees feel at ease, so they’d let down their defenses and reveal more. Until I see evidence otherwise, I’m presuming Ms. Carroll is good at doing that.
The CSM editor says they have no idea what Ms. Carroll’s opinions are about the war, etc. Marine spokesmen have indicated she’s at the peak of the media they’ve dealt with over there, that she’s a respected pro, and that she’s ‘courageous’ as well at her work.
So you’re suggesting the opinions and observations of the boots on the ground over there must take a backseat to your own denunciations based on the thin evidence of which groups spoke up in her behalf? If so, to remain consistent, you’d better add the US Marine Corps to your list of terrorist orgs.
And I don’t think Ms. Carroll needs to make her opinions known now, just to please her denouncers. Why should she have to act like a puppet on a string? To please those who’ve verbally abused her?
It’s one thing to have doubts and suspicions. It’s quite another to make accusations and denunciations of someone simply because she doesn’t publicly proclaim her allegiance to some extreme ideology that matches your own.
KEVIN:
PLEASE READ MORE CAREFULLY. THE JORDAN TIMES, WITH WHOM SHE WAS EMPLOYED FULL-TIME (SHE IS ONLY A FREE-LANCER FOR THE CSM) SAID THEY KNEW HER VIEWS AND PUBLISHED WHAT THOSE VIEWS WERE. SHE HAS NOT DISAVOWED THEM. AND DON’T EXPECT HER TO. SO A MARINE SPOKESMAN SAID NICE THINGS ABOUT HER. ANOTHER MARINE SPOKESMAN IN IRAQ SAID A LOT OF DUMB THINGS AGAINST AMERICA AND ISRAEL. AND HE NOW WORKS FOR AL-JAZEERA.
http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2005/10/al_jazeeras_ame.html
MARINE SPOKESPEOPLE ARE NOT THE BE-ALL, END-ALL ON THIS STORY OR MANY OTHERS. (Caps used for differentiation purposes only.)
DEBBIE SCHLUSSEL

Kevin Hayden on April 3, 2006 at 11:08 am

Kevin,
If the Christian Science Monitor supposedly has no ideas of Carroll’s views on the war maybe the Marine spokesman doesn’t, either. When did the Marine spokesman make the comments? Regardelss, I am sure the Marine spokesman is not going to be critical at this point in time. Just look at the hysterical responses to Debbie’s posts.
“And I don’t think Ms. Carroll needs to make her opinions known now, just to please her denouncers. Why should she have to act like a puppet on a string? To please those who’ve verbally abused her?”
“It’s quite another to make accusations and denunciations of someone simply because she doesn’t publicly proclaim her allegiance to some extreme ideology that matches your own.”
Funny, I was going to say the same thing about you and the other anti-Debbie posters. Do as I say, not as I do, anyone?

Jeff_W on April 3, 2006 at 12:55 pm

Just back from reading the plethora of conservative blogs all over the web attacking Debbie on this topic. In a word — PATHETIC.
The major theme spewed from their fog-filled minds is that Jill Carroll has the right to dissent and Debbie is such a bad girl for attacking her. Jill has just been released from captivity and how evil we all are (yes, they include us readers too) for criticizing her at this time.
Jill Carroll’s right to dissent in a time of war in favor of a blood-thirsty enemy who seeks our destruction is beyond criticizing don’t you know. Never mind that this kind of dissent can indeed be dangerous to the lives of others, we won’t go into that pesky topic. All that matters is how evil we all are for pointing out that Ms. Carroll is worthy of examination and, yes, even criticism.
I also found out that our Ms. Carroll didn’t just disagree with the war but that she actually called it a crime. Imagine that, a supposedly neutral journalist reporting on the war with that kind of opinion. I’m sure we could all trust any stories she wrote to be accurate.
Yes, Ms. Carrol has the right to dissent but to do it in a time of war in favor our enemies is worthy of criticism. She should be criticized. Her affiliations are troubling and should be pointed out. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Debbie is only one of a tiny few who has the guts to do it.
Debbie, please stop trying to explain yourself to these “tolerant” types. We’ll go on protecting their butts in times of war just like we always have.

DeBodine on April 3, 2006 at 2:37 pm

I agree 100%, DeBodine. I am through responding to those nuts. They aren’t really concerned about Jill Carroll or the truth, they are sharks and hypocrites who think they smell blood in the water.
Shame on the jellyfish so called conservatives bending over and taking it up the rear.
Thank you Debbie and the very few others willing to step out of line, exercising what is supposed to be the Holy Grail of the liberals, free speech and dissent.

Jeff_W on April 3, 2006 at 3:36 pm

Dear Debbie
I met Carroll in Cairo two summers ago in an Arabic language training school (Kalimaat).
I admit I was struck by her anti-American and anti-Israel sentiments. From the comments she made she seemed to detest America more than Arabs did. She was pleased that I mistakenly identified her as Canadian and expressed a wish to deny being American. I was surprised knowing how proud Americans normally are of their identity. She refused to use the name Israel but called it ‘that state’ with some venom, which made me feel uncomfortable as she knew I was Jewish.
What’s really funny, considering that she works for the CS Monitor, were the comments she made about the Bible ‘that shit book,’ in reference to Israeli and Christian fundamentalist claims to Jewish ownership of the land of Israel.
However I don’t think it is fair to take her comments too seriously. I think you will find that most Americans abroad, especially in the Middle East, will disavow themselves from their countries policies since they are under constant seige. Also, after a while the constant harping against America may cause them to have a loss of faith.
THANKS, MAYER, FOR CONFIRMING WHAT WE KNOW AND OTHERS WISH TO DENY. I APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH. IF YOU CAN PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA E-MAIL, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS ON THIS.
DEBBIE SCHLUSSEL

Mayer on April 3, 2006 at 8:28 pm

I’m not going to bat this around anymore as the hysterical nuts seem to have tired and gone back to the fairy tale land they live in.
But, I make a prediction here and I’ll apologize profusely if wrong. That is, Jill Carroll is going to be all over the news for at least a year.
All her views are going to come out and I predict Debbie will be 100% accurate about Carroll’s views since she will be on every talk show, news program, and the book deals.
I read her so called clarification and if you will read closely, she is not putting the blame on the people we are at war against, she is careful to only blame the few who kidnapped her and killed the translator. That is a very telling and key phrase to me.
Time will tell who should is wrong and I am betting it’s not Debbie. Will all the hysterical loonies admit Debbie was right, then?
I, too, applaud you, Debbie, for not letting these spineless big mouths on the left AND right intimidate you and the other few here and elsewhere.

The_Man on April 3, 2006 at 10:10 pm

I also found out that our Ms. Carroll didn’t just disagree with the war but that she actually called it a crime. Imagine that, a supposedly neutral journalist reporting on the war with that kind of opinion. I’m sure we could all trust any stories she wrote to be accurate.
Cite a source, please. Other than her forced video and her words before she reached American protectors, I’d like to review the sources of such quotes of hers. I’m quite capable of judging her on her words rather than unsourced claims.
Thanks.
AGAIN, KEVIN, LEARN TO READ. I CITED THE JORDAN TIMES, WHICH WAS A STATEMENT BY HER OWN CHOSEN FORMER EMPLOYER AS TO HER STATEMENTS. THEY SEEM TO THINK THEY KNOW HER. SHE HASN’T DISAVOWED THEIR COMMENTS. NOTHING WILL CONVINCE YOU.

Kevin Hayden on April 3, 2006 at 11:05 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if this whole captivity/kidnapping turns out to be a hoax and set-up, designed to make Jill Carroll a mole and conduit of information between the U.S. Islamic groups she’s so chummy with…..and Al Quaeda
In the 1950s, if you committed treason, you were executed ala the Rosenbergs.
Now if you are a treasonous traitor to your country, you get a book deal and Oprah rolls out the red carpet.
We’ve come a long way.

glamchild on April 4, 2006 at 1:01 am

For everyone saying Debbie is so wrong about Jill Carroll’s views, it seems her defenders sure are sure about her views.
It would be very interesting if Jill Carroll came out now and said she was for the war. Nothing madder than hippies scorned!

Jeff_W on April 4, 2006 at 9:06 am

No debbie, Mr. Hayden is referring to me. Apparently, he misunderstood what I said in another thread in my exchange with “Ms. Crapper” and so didn’t quote my comment above. He want’s my source for Ms. Carroll saying that the war was a crime.
I’m an honest man Kevin, I detest liars. I found the quote (it was in italics) at one of the conservative blogs on the web. I spent upwards of 2 hours going through dozens of blogs on this topic. Unfortunately, I did not save a link to the quote attributed to Ms. Carroll.
In retrospect I can see now that that was a mistake as things are heating up. If you are the Kevin Hayden that I think you are then I’m no fan of your writing and feel little interest in doing research for you. However, if I come across the link again I will post it on this site. I assure it is there and that if you apply yourself you can find it the same way that I did.
I didn’t want to get consumed with all of this but I’m beginning to have an increasing desire to have the real Jill Carroll exposed myself. I work for a living so my ability to do research on this is limited.
Debbie, forget what I said before. I had no idea of the magnitude of people who are arrayed against you. Let’s all post what we find out. Let all truth be revealed.

DeBodine on April 4, 2006 at 1:45 pm

Just wait and see. I’m wagering that the whole kidnap drama is just a big HOAX and pre-planned.
Also, has anyone seen the red streak in her hair? How did that come along? Did she rush to an Iraqi parlor for hair streaking, or is that the after-effect of the fashionable hijab she can’t be seen without?

I must have seen some of the same sites DeBodine has read. I’ve been Googling, and dear, sweet Debbie is Public Enemy #1 right now it seems, not from just the lefty loons but a good number of so called conservative sites.
I don’t understand why, but there are a lot of blog sites who call themselves conservatives who are just falling over themselves to nominate Jill Carroll for sainthood for some very weird reason. I understand the left’s lovefest, and as I’ve stated before I am glad she is safe, but the more I read about her it is clear she is what Debbie has stated.
Maybe it’s sort of a version of Bush’s “compassionate conservatism” he talked about when he was first elected, saying you are a conservative but trying to make nicey nice with liberals I guess. I don’t worry about the libs, they are never going to like conservatives, so forget ‘em I say.

The_Man on April 4, 2006 at 9:57 pm

From the very first moment I saw her on the television, I never believed that she was really abducted. I felt, right from the beginning, that the whole thing was staged and she not only knew her “captors”, but they were associates of hers.
She has just never been believable to me.
