Feel Old?: Charlie’s Angels in Their 60s

By Debbie Schlussel
**** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATE ****
Even though this site is mostly about politics, national security, and Islam, it’s also about pop culture, including movie reviews. And even though I usually skewer Hollywood, it was cool to see the three original “Charlie’s Angels” in last night’s Emmy Awards tribute to the late producer Aaron Spelling, who created the show.
When I was a kid, watching that show was one of my guilty pleasures. I had the Charlie’s Angels dolls, the doll clothes, the van, etc. So it’s odd to note that one is in her sixties and the others almost there. Despite that fact, they all looked good–with the exception of plastic surgery victim Farrah Fawcett. Fawcett is 59, Kate Jackson almost 58, and Jaclyn Smith is almost 61.

Guess which one was my favorite “Charlie’s Angel”? . . .

**** UPDATE, 08/29/06: Reader Susie B. writes:

Bless you! I just watched an old episode of the show last week (a rarity since I have two small children and a husband and never get the house to myself), and I loved every minute of it. I’m 35, and have many fond memories of the ultra fashionable, feminine but strong women. They rocked! Jaclyn Smith was my favorite too.

Reader Rona writes:

Regarding Charlie’s Angels, my favorite is Jaclyn Smith who still looks classy. I always said when I grew up I wanted to be elegant like Jaclyn Smith. . . .
Compared to the Lindsay Lohans and Paris Hiltons, these ladies were quite tame. In fact they were. They acted with much more esteemed actors such as John Forsyth, the late Dean Martin and countless others, plus there show was not about getting over on men for power and sex, which these current icons promote.
Who does this current generation have for examples? Well Britney Spears emulates Madonna. Guess that says it all.

AMEN! That’s why I liked “Charlie’s Angels.”

I’ve grown fond of the show. It was classy, funny and enjoyable. “Charlie Angels” belongs to an era when right and wrong still ruled and both men and women where on their best behavior. The late 70s was a gentle and settled time without the turmoil, cultural degredation and violence that troubles us today. I’m probably all right because I came of age then. I wouldn’t know whose Debbie’s favorite Angel was but for me Jaclyn’s Smith’s Kelly Garrett was beautiful in both manners and looks. She was the woman many girls dreamed of becoming and the woman a lot of men wanted to marry. The perfect Lady. Which brings to mind the Esther/Abi Ofarim song that was a singles hit a decade earlier before “Charlie’s Angels came on the air:
Yo-de-lady yo-de-lady that I love
(I?m de lady de lady who)
Yo-de-lady yo-de-lady that I love
(I?m de lady de lady who)
yo de liddle lady
(I?m de liddle lady) oohoo
That’s what comes to mind for me: a more innocent and vanished time. In the Angels, we bear witness to a unique moment in American television.

Hey Debbie-did you also have the “Farrah Wings”? If so, how ’bout a pic. I was in grade school but still had a Farrah poster. But not the good one. My Mom said I was too young.
YES, I DID HAVE THE FARRAH HAIRSTYLE, THEN.

I used to steal the Charlie Angels card when I was a kid. The storeowner caught me and said that I had to pay for the cards before I put it in my pocket, so I paid 25 cents and bought one pack. Hey Deb, be honest like me, did you ever steal one of them packs?
NO, I NEVER STOLE/SHOPLIFTED IN MY LIFE.

Jaclyn Smith – hands DOWN!
I’d eat the corn and peanuts from her ****! (I know, I know…get your minds out of the gutter….it isn’t what you think! I was just trying to infuse a little levity into this thread. For you Muzlums – Levity means: excessive or unseemly frivolity. In other words…it’s a JOKE! Relax, and put your arrows back in their quivers.)
LOL!

Jaclyn Smith was my favorite, too. She was such an elegant, classic beauty. I didn’t see the Emmy show, but Jaclyn Smith doesn’t look any older today as she did then.

Farah modeled the iconic 70s image, but in one issue Star Magazine printed a Jaclyn Smith poster. I brought it to elementary school; it was the center of attention during recess. Mmm-mmmmm. Jaclyn Smith: Nodoubtaboutit.

Never stole in your life…sheesh! You are too honest. But when I did get caught, I got my ass whipped. So I don’t steal anything
