So “Persepolis” is a version of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” eh?
As for the “Predator” stories, I have to laugh at that! We, Humans are the WORST predators on this planet. See how cows and chickens are butchered in abattoirs. The amount of slaughter of living things – only to have the excessive amounts thrown out later in the supers. And the pain – mental and physical. Enough to put you off your feed for the rest of your life.
Not to mention the way lab animals are prevented from screaming with pain.
As long as you talk of Aliens, perhaps, we’re not at the top of the food-chain – know what I mean? (Shudder).
But as long as we treat other living beings without respect and compassion, do we deserve any better?
We, humans ARE the Predators to other living beings here.

Kalifornia Kafir: Have heard many good things about “The Lives of Others,” from Rush amongst others; look forward to seeing it on DVD as soon as it’s released.
Definitely looking forward to seeing “Persepolis,” too. Hope that Marjane Satrapi is taking serious security precautions, as no doubt she is now marked for death by the “peaceful” and “tolerant” Moonbat Mullahs of Iran. That she now resides in France (~40% Muslim and rising) unfortunately makes her a relatively easy target (like Van Gogh in Holland). Best of luck to her!

I saw an interesting German movie on OnDemand last night. For those of you not put off by subtitles, try “The Lives of Others.” The movie is about an East German STASI agent assigned to monitor a playwright and his mistress. The STASI agent becomes personally involved in the lives of his charges, and has to struggle with good vs. evil. A very good, faith-in-humanity story. (My apologies Debbie if you’ve already reviewed this). Happy New Year all!

Pat: You’re right. Jack Nicholson plays the same character over and over again. At this point he’s a crashing bore. Same with Morgan Freeman–he’s always the wise and morally superior black man. Snooze.

Another good description of the loss of freedom in Iran is Afar Nafisi’s book, Reading Lolita in Tehran. Maybe you could suggest to Jeff Meyers that he lead a book club/discussion group on this book or on the comic book version of Persepolis at the Arab American Museum.

The OmegaMan is right as far as “who’s who” in the A v. P 2 movie, not that it makes a whole lot of difference, either way — so dark, so much rapid camera-movement, so confusing to tell what’s happening from one moment to the next. A big disappointment, even though R.A. is a pleasure to look at (hope she’s in lots more movies, now that she’s “dead” on “24″ — which also appears to be dead itself, for the time being).
Rent the first A v. P for a real story, interesting characters, etc. Better yet, rent the original “Predator,” with the Governator, and the first three of the “Alien” movies (all different, but all good, esp. #2, “Aliens”) — the fourth one, “Resurrection,” was pretty awful.
Hate to see a great actor like Daniel Day-Lewis turn pan-Islamist (if indeed he did “turn” and wasn’t always that way). Amazing how the very people who most benefit from the capitalist, American/Western way of life, turn against it in some sort of hissy-fit of guilt over their lavish life-styles; they must know that their new, bestest friends, the Islamofascists, would line them up against a wall and hack them to death with machetes were their “dream” of an America brought to her knees by the Islamists ever to come to pass.
Well, no accounting for stupidity, or self-loathing, I reckon . . .

I agree. the SciFi flicks are made to please their audience. Not the silly anti-American Hollywood types. A decent SciFi flick always makes lots of money (as a return on investment). The other Flicks will be lucky to break even.
