“21″: Best Movie of the Year, So Far

By Debbie Schlussel
I’m prohibited from reviewing “21” until it comes out at the end of the month. But it’s simply the best movie I’ve seen, so far, this year.

21.jpg

It’s based on the true story of MIT students who won big money at Vegas casinos by counting cards at the blackjack tables. Even if you don’t like gambling, you will like this. It stars Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne, Jim Sturgess (the lead), and Kate Bosworth. Here’s the trailer:

Stay tuned for my complete review when the movie debuts in theaters.

Debbie: How did you get past Spacey’s moonbattyness? (You know, him and Chavez is buds.)
[SWG: YES, I KNOW. BUT THE MOVIE IS GOOD. AND HE'S A BAD GUY IN IT. STUFF HE LIKELY LEARNED FROM GOOD OLE' HUGO. I WAS PLANNING TO NOTE THAT IN MY REVIEW. STAY TUNED. DS]

This is nearly as good as the TV show “Las Vegas.” Even in the world of gambling there are lessons about honor, right and wrong and fair play and doing right by others. We can have fun without losing sight of who we are and our principles. Some things stay in Las Vegas. What we take home stays with us all our lives. Above all, yes G-d is home even in the casinos!

I loved the book this was based on called Bringing Down the House. Hopefully the movie is just as good.

Even before the book Bringing Down the House, the MIT professor who first came up with this idea was Edward O. Thorp. He wrote a book called Beat the Dealer which is a mathematical system called the theory of large numbers. The History channel did a couple documentaries about this. Anyway, since the sixties Edward O. Thorp made millions with his own hedge fund. Finally based on this theory at leaset 2 MIT teams were created the second with more sucess. Here’s a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_O._Thorp it’s pretty accurate from the documentary I saw. Enjoy!
