Forget McDonald’s, Border Patrol Drops High School Grad Requirement

By Debbie Schlussel
Whenever an agency drops its requirements, that means it has 1) trouble attracting suitable job applicants, and/or 2) trouble retaining employees.
But I thought we were trying to improve the U.S. Border Patrol, not bring it down. Apparently, I was wrong:

The Border Patrol has had to reduce its qualifications for
the job in order to meet the new numbers.

borderpatrolagentbadge.jpgdistressflag.jpg

The Border Patrol has made three significant changes in order to meet the new requirements and put more boots on the ground. It no longer requires a high school diploma or GED (the equivalent of a high school
diploma) for entrance. The only qualifications for the job are that one be under 40, a US citizen, be able to learn Spanish, possess a driver’s license, and pass through several background and medical checks. After application, candidates have to take tests in law,
firearms, Spanish, physical training and driving, but the Border Patrol has lowered the score necessary to pass from 85% to 70%. It also has condensed the standard 88 days of basic training to 55 days.

A former Border Patrol agent friend who sent me this writes:

Not even requiring a HS Diploma or GED? What on earth could they be thinking?
Interestingly enough, they state you must be able to ‘learn’ Spanish. (I wonder if they require agents to speak English?) I have seen a few agents that made me wonder.
The tool they use for determining the ability to learn a foreign language is the DLAB written exam (Defense Language Aptitude Battery) which is absolutely impossible to pass. I know, I severely flunked it
myself.
Consequently, if you already speak Spanish, this test is waived. This leaves border rats with family on both sides of the border, East LA Cholos and assorted tattooed gangbangers among potential applicants.
Anyone with any serious aspirations of law enforcement as a career, with any degree of education, would never entertain consideration of a career in the patrol. Sad.

Sad, indeed. None of this is going to help change morale at the U.S. Border Patrol or help retain the many good agents who are fed up with their agency and their employer, which is ultimately Michael “Serpenthead” Chertoff’s dysfunctional, disastrous Department of Homeland Security.
Remember, the fish rots from the head down.

Debbie,
Can you tell us what we can do to help move Tancredo’s bill — the Secure America Via Employment (SAVE) Act,along in the house?

Oh man! If I had no scruples – this is an invitation to rake in the bucks for a Spanish speaker with connections across the river. Don’t even need a high school equivalency!

I am retired LE. About 25 years ago I applied to the BP but changed my mind after the Oral Interview where I was treated to the most racist questions I have ever experienced. I decided right after the Oral to withdraw my application because of the attitude of the Interview board. The message was that non Hispanics are not welcome.
BTW I passed the Spanish test.
The Border Patrol is the most racist LE agency I have ever witnessed. What ever happened to a Government agency representing the public at large. It currently is composed of over 70% to 80% Hispanics even though the USA is less than 20% Hispanic.
Seems to me they are in violation of racial discrimination on a massive scale not to mention the fact they require officers to pass the Spanish test just to apply.
The retired BP agent cited by Debbie is right on the money with his remark:
Consequently, if you already speak Spanish, this test is waived. This leaves border rats with family on both sides of the border, East LA Cholos and assorted tattooed gangbangers among potential applicants.
Now that they have lowered the standards, watch for the corruption to go through the roof. Who in their right mind would work for the BP after what happened to Ramos and Compean, they are still sitting in prison for just doing their jobs.

I know of companies in private industry that deliberately do not hire the top candiates — they’ll hire C students rather than A students (maybe with grade inflation the A- students instead of the A students). They do this because they figure the more mediocre employees are more likely to do exactly what their managers tell them to do & not ask questions, not wonder whether they are carrying out the mission. Maybe ICE is looking for people like that; like ScottyDog says, corruption and incompetence will get worse, but maybe ICE thinks the new employees will not become upset at the lack of law enforcement, and maybe they hope the new employees will not contribute to blogs such as this.
Racial discrimination is inherent in government. I’ve read that most agencies have ‘diversity’ hiring goals & must provide explanations if they don’t hire enough blacks, Latinos, women, etc., etc.

Maybe they can hire “starving artist” musicians to serenade travellers with live Mozart, Bach, or Gershwin to soothe the nerves at security checkpoints. LOL.

cf, The Border Patrol is not a division of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). The Border Patrol is part of CBP (Customs and Border Protection). Of course, neither CBP nor ICE is part of CIS (Citizenship & Immigration Services). But all three agencies are part of the Department of Homeland Stupidity. By the way, all three agencies were created when the President and Congress decided to consolidate Immigration & Customs , which were formerly under two departments, Justice and Treasury. Thus we now have THREE completely separate agencies that independently handle various Customs & Immigration duties, under one fledgling Department.
WTF?
Customs was created by the second act of Congress in 1733. There was no requirement for Customs Officers to obtain a high school diploma back in the day. There were no high schools. The good old days are here again!

FWIU, the Border Patrol lowered its standards because outside of the southern border area, BP is largely comprised of male caucasians and is having trouble attracting minorities to patrol that increasingly breached, cold Canadian border (Not every illegal from Loonie-Land comes over the bridge from Windsor).

Man, I always looked at my Border Patrol Academy graduation day with pride for having completed THE toughest training in Federal Law Enforcement. Boy am I glad that my days in green are over. I’d hate to have to become an ethics, English, and Life Management skills teacher for all these rockheads getting a gun strapped to their side….
Scotty Dog, I agree with you on one point…Corruption will go up. But alas, it is not a surprise to see you still spouting your whole “Ramos and Compean…doing their jobs…” pablum…

If this true? Then as I see it, the blames lies with Bush, Chertoff and David Aguilar. Again, politics influencing law enforcement. The BP will suffer for the next decade because of this change. We saw it start after the mass hiring in 1988 and have been paying the price ever since.
For the last decade the politicians have been tearing down the BP, it started with easing off on Spanish and law grades, scaling back the interview, lowering the standards for entry and reducing the training at the academy.
It began with Clinton/Meissner and now continues with Bush/Chertoff and shame on the Chief of the Border Patrol David Aguilar and his staff for buying in to it for their own political gain.
I’m very proud of my 26 years in the BP but I’m very thankful I’m gone now….another soild orgranization being destroyed for political purposes. All those guys that gave their lives in the line of duty are turning over in their graves.

ParLyzer, your comment is form over substance; it does not challenge the central point I was making.

I wanted to start and finish my career in the BP but, after 17+ years, I found the agency emasculated by pc, numbnuts, spin doctors who turned it into a travesty. I sat on many hiring boards and had some applicants who I wondered why they weren’t in jail, nevertheless, made it to the board.
Some of the posters are dead on…this has become a nesting bed for pukes who have puke family members on the other side of the fence. It’s becaome a “brown boys” organization; it was evident 20 years ago when everything was about the hispanics and screw the gringos. It’s a shame because it was a great agency with a rich heritage.
Unfortunately, I’m finishing out my career in ICE which has turned out to be a clusterf**k in its own right. I’m ready to retire.

Hey JasonBourne81
The U.S. Customs Service always hired individuals with high caliber. Some of the more famous Customs Officers include Nathanial Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Pat Garrett. The Border Patrol on the other hand hired an illegal alien when the agency was under the Department of Justice. In other words, don’t blame customs for the woes of Border Patrol. Oh, and by the way, the second act of congress was approved in 1789, not 1733. Maybe you need to relearn American History. Everybody understands that the Constitution of the United States was ratified in 1789. duh!
