I wanted to go see Gran Torino based upon your reviews but find that it only showing at very few theaters in the entire area. It’s ridiculous. What is up with that, DS?

I really appreciate these movie reviews. Few commercial reviewers can be relied on to recognize the incessant moralizing the immoral left foists on we unwashed masses as entertainment. You had me convinced to see Gran Torino until I read OSJ’s comment. Typically, whatever Morgenwhozzit at the Journal recommends I avoid at all cost. OSJ tipped me back. I like Eastwood and love American vehicles, but if he’s going to lecture, there’s an Alistair Sterling book yet to finish.
[I: OSJ IS COMPLETELY WRONG. THE MOVIE IS GREAT, AND IT'S NOT A LECTURE AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE. IN FACT, THE ONE SCENE WITH BLACKS, THEY ARE HOODLUMS WHOM CLINT "HANDLES" AND THE HMONGS ARE SHOWN AS GANGSTERS AND GOOD PEOPLE. THERE'S NOTHING ANTI-WHITE ABOUT IT. EASTWOOD'S CHARACTER IS VERY LIKABLE AND A HERO. DS]

I haven’t seen Valkyrie yet, obviousy, but am pretty familiar with the relevant history. While Stauffenberg showed great courage in his actions, there were others in the German military–I am thinking particularly of Hans Oster–who attempted to take action against Hitler much earlier.
Oster revealed the plan for Germany’s 1940 attack in the West to Dutch Intelligence, who apparently did not take it seriously. He also used Nazi secret service money to smuggle Jews out of the country under cover of an intelligence operation. He was in many ways the driving force behind the whole conspiracy, and recruited many others into it.

“Gran Torino” was your standard politically correct anti-white treacle, but Eastwood tries to dress it up by dissing blacks and whites “equally.” Moral of this movie? Hmongs (like the one that massacred those white people in MN when he was trespassing on their land, shooting a couple of them, including and unarmed woman, in the back)are gentlekindwisepeaceful and whites and blacks are idiots. Saved ya 10 bucks.

Von Stauffenberg was no hero. He was an antisemite and a German supremacist. He just didn’t like Hitler and his methods. Too vulgar for him. It is disgusting that this film….and of course Germany itself….regards this man as a hero.

Von Stauffenberg was a prominent member of the old German aristocracy and was never an ideological nazi, but a conservative German nationalist, typical of his social class. He was approached by anti-Hitler conspirators even before the war, but hesitated for quite a while because, in spite of everything, he felt bound by the oath of allegiance he took as an officer which as of 1934 was sworn to Hitler personally and not to the country. Nevertheless, he did not blow the whistle on the conspirators, even though it was obligatory for him to do so according to the military code of conduct. With all that said, he still envisioned the war ending with Germany keeping much of what it acquired during Hitler, he wanted Germany to return to it’s 1914 borders plus retain Austria as it’s integral part.
I watched the trailer and I can not imagine Tom Cruise playing a German aristocratic career officer, if for no other reason then for the actor’s perpetual smug smirk that is shown throughout.

Wow! You sure do know how to explode the high-falutin’ liberals who put on these airs — and to do it in a humorous way.
Nonetheless, this movie is rather up-to-date in its thematic content, as it seems like it’s every other day that we read of another female school-teacher getting busted for having had a sexual liaison with one of her middle-school or high-school students.

Maybe so, but Cruise certainly looks a lot like the real life von Stauffenberg.
