Big Pharma might buy you a dinner now. But not your spouse. I rarely go to these places. Incidentally, when I did, in the late 90s and early 2000s, they would lock you in seminars 8 hours/day and feed you from buffets. Not useful as a “vacation.”

What is striking in this is – how basicaly normal Jackson is. After seeing how he changed over the years, it is easy to forget what he looked like when he was a great star.

And while it is a normal Reagan speach, it sure sounds nice after watching Obama twist and turn words on edge.

To ‘BB’: From the pictures I’ve seen, Elvis wasn’t wearing sunglasses – but he did have a drugged-out look on his face.

As for Jackson – I read that in his case, the sunglasses were initially copied from Marvin Gaye, who wore them in one of his public appearances in 1983 – to cover up that he was coked out at the time.

You have noted well before, even though Reagan was the best president in my lifetime, he made plenty of mistakes. This should be noted as one of those times.

Good point ConcernedPatriot–very much the same as Nixon and Elvis–same hypocrisy, masking of a lie. Elvis stood there too, meeting Nixon with dark sunglasses on as I recall, too.

I am curious here, is wearing those in such a case NOT a giveaway that the wearer is phony, or at least hiding something? Do you meet the president with shades on? uhuh, real cool, man.

Debbie I know, but things have changed since our parents were in practice, especially mine since I’m much older than you. My husband went to a doctor who boasted about the Breakers. All they had to do to write it off was attend a half hour “seminar” on the drug being touted. If you sit in enough doctor’s offices around lunch time you will see the drug reps shmearing them with platters of food and such. I don’t hate doctors. I hate what has happened to the profession. My Mom, also an MD, saw this coming. She dreaded it. I’m glad she’s not here to see it. I agree totally about the stupid lawsuits getting out of hand. Mom was a GP and paying a pittance for malpractice insurance when she died in 1974 but it was rising. She wasn’t sure she could maintain a practice for long at the low rates she charged and couldn’t bear to raise them. Her office was in our house and she had no employees but that insurance going up was going to be the deal breaker and she’d never been sued.
I do disagree about Propofol in this context. Sure it was being used in a non-approved way, much like Viagra and other drugs are commonly prescribed but it is a legal pharmaceutical and was administered by a physician.
That’s a supposedly a big difference from the street drugs MJ was against. But the key word is “supposedly” and I guess that’s what you meant but I really don’t think it’s funny. It’s actually very sad particularly in this case where the doctor protested but in the end preferred not to lose his celebrity client’s good will. Oh well! that worked really well, NOT. Had the “good doctor” been more forceful he may have prevented this from happening. It’s his conscience now.
