Leonard Nimoy Mocked Judaism Using Nude Women & on “Star Trek”

By Debbie Schlussel

*** UPDATE: Leonard Nimoy wanted to force Israel to give up Jerusalem and was active with the far-leftist, self-hating, anti-Israel organization, Americans for Peace Now. ***

Yes, I was and remain a fan of “Star Trek.” But longtime readers of this site already know why I am not a fan of Leonard Nimoy, who died this morning at age 83. And it has little to do with his role as Spock, nor am I racist against Vulcans.

Leonard Nimoy mocks Judaism’s Sacred Kohanic (Priestly) Hand Gesture

As I’ve noted on this site, as a kid I used to think it was cool that my mother taught Nimoy’s son and got to meet Spock’s alter ego, when she was a student teacher in the New York Public Schools, in Greenwich Village. Around that time, “Star Trek” was on the air, and Nimoy was famous. But, since then, I’ve grown disgusted with Leonard Nimoy, his politics, and his often willing mockery of Judaism in a way that would cause riots and beheadings if he did it to Islam (toward which he preached tolerance).

I’ve mentioned this before: Nimoy put out, “Shekina,” a nude picture book of naked women ensconcing themselves in and/or posing with sacred Jewish religious items that we use in our ceremonies in our faith. Yes, Nimoy was Jewish, but not observant and completely disrespectful of those who were. Who else would make a dumb nudie picture book like that? Not someone who was a proud Jew. And yet Nimoy traveled the country trying to appear at Jewish book fairs and pimp his sicko view of my religion and his (in name only) to Jewish communities all over America. When he came to Detroit, his book was considered so offensive that even the morons who run the Jewish Book Fair here, canceled his appearance. Yet, a left-wing, self-hating Jew, Hanan Lis–who married into money–paid to host Nimoy’s pimping of his perverted, depraved book at a reformed Jewish temple.

If Nimoy had published a book like this with nude women having sex with a koran, Barack Obama would have called his publisher and demanded they stop the printing. Oh, wait–no publisher would publish a book of nude women posing with the koran. Would never ever happen.

Nimoy was a weirdo with strange fetishes, as he also did a fat chick nudie photo book. This guy needed help, not outer space (where he seemed to dwell, given all his bizarre stuff).

And who else would take a holy hand gesture that is supposed to be used only by the Jewish priests and blaspheme it into a gesture of fictional outer space aliens known as Vulcans? Yes, the gesture that Nimoy, himself, injected into his role as Spock–in which he separates his fingers in a certain way to split the hand–is an important and sacred hand-gesture that the “kohanim”–the Jewish priests–make. My late great-great-uncle, Chaim Dorman, was in the tribe of “kohanim,” making him a “kohane,” or a Jewish priest, and he has the hand-gesture depicted on his gravestone, as many deceased kohanim do.

And, so, I take no pride in Nimoy, even though it’s a fact that two of the top members of the Starship Enterprise were Jewish (William Shatner is also a Jew). As I’ve said before, it’s clear to me that the Klingons got to him.

Yes, Nimoy’s parents were allegedly Orthodox Jews and, yes, he produced and starred in some TV Holocaust movie in the early ’90s. But so what? He clearly didn’t learn the lessons of that tragedy. Unfortunately, when Leonard Nimoy told us to “Live Long and Prosper,” he apparently lived that way off of the mockery of Judaism.

Beam me up, Scotty. There’s no intelligent life on this planet, if the uber-worship of this creep is any indication.

And whereever Leonard Nimoy has now gone has also become a place from which Scotty’s beaming is also needed.

Usually, when a Jew passes away, we say, “Zichrono LiVrachah,” which means “Blessed Be His Memory” or “Of Blessed Memory.” Sadly, I cannot say that here. I don’t like what I remember of him off the TV screen.

Leonard Nimoy, bye.

Nimoy called for Israel to give up half of Jerusalem.

Okay,so for things that virtually no one knows about him, you’re mocking people for missing him for the things he was famous for.

Smooth.

as a young Jewish male there was no more attractive role model for us than Spock. We imagined ourselves like him, emotionally incapable of dealing with women… yes this did go through my head… as it was reinforced by the whole hip everyone has Autism fad. I would mimic Spock on dates subconsciously. I know Jewish guys who sound like Woody Allen, but to me Leonard Nimoy was the know it all that I wanted to be like. It was all an act. It is amazing how unJewish he really was and it shows how reinforced into cultural stereotypes I was.

Very informative article, Debbie. Indeed him knowing what it meant and using it on the show as a “Vulcan” sign is ghastly and a supreme a-hole move.

As an aside, I always hated that show and never understood its appeal to the masses.

When I was 11 or 12 in 1974ish in suburban Philadelphia, I was at a Toys-R-Us buying models or something and he was at a table that morning doing a promo and signing “Star Trek” toys. I wasn’t buying a toy, but I figured, WTH, I’ll stand in the short line and shake his hand.

When it was my turn, he puts his hand out to take the toy, sees my extended, empty hand, then turns to the next kid, leaving me hanging.

Besides being a bore and a hack (his entire career he played an emotionless, Vulcan character who speaks in monotone – real acting chops, there, Spock), I’ll always remember him primarily as a jacka$$. lol!

I like that DS will tell the truth & not be a phony & praise someone who doesn’t deserve it when they cark it. That’s how I roll & I LIKE it. I’d hate to be an old phony baloney!

I am very proud that I have NEVER seen 1 episode of “Star Trek”. I know about tribbles, the green lady & the philosophy of sacrificing 1 for the many but I just was never into “Star Trek”. I’m more of a “Twilight Zone” person…& Shatner was on many episodes of that fabulous show. Oh, I did like “In Search Of…” though!

Indeed. Ew. Nimoy did sound like a pervo. Yikes!

Whadda perv!!

I did see him on SEAHUNT in the late 50s or early 60s. It was his YOUNG PERV phase I guess.

These people should be held accountable for the nasty things they do. You won’t hear about this in the main stream media. Good Job, Debbie.

RT on February 27, 2015 at 8:14 pm

Nimoy also became something of a lush while playing Spock on the original “Star Trek,” to the point where 20 years later he had to go to rehab to conquer his alcohol addictions. It figures. I presume, with his lefty politics, weirdo perversions, and anti-Israel stance, a more appropriate sendoff would be “yimach shmo ve-zichro” – “May his name and memory be obliterated”?

ConcernedPatriot on February 27, 2015 at 8:47 pm

It is now my practice to always wait to read of Debbie’s observations when someone dies. I know Debbie will tell the truth of the character of the man. I have to say damnit, I am sorry to hear this of Leonard…not surprised though.

Laurel on February 27, 2015 at 9:15 pm

I only liked the original series of Star Trek which was made at a time when Nimoy couldn’t get away with this stuff and his personality off screen didn’t matter.

That and his ridiculous Ballad of Bilbo Baggins is how I’ll choose to remember him. Always good for a laugh.

Deb:

I question whether Leonard Nimoy was always the man you describe. As he got older, he seemed to go more and more “over the deep end”. He divorced his first wife and quickly slid downhill.

Looking at Nimoy’s life in total, there is the younger man who was admirable; the older man who was not.

I prefer to put this into perspective.

The character that Leonard Nimoy played in the early Star Trek was interesting. Unfortunately, his actual life was not really praiseworthy. Nimoy did mock Judaism and had no regard for Israel.

Worry on February 28, 2015 at 2:10 am

I have question. Was Nemoy ever questioned about his use of the hand sign, where it came from, his motivation behind it? If not why is it assumed to be disrespectful, maybe it was his way of giving respect to the priests or some other reason besides disrespect?

Maybe Maybe Not on February 28, 2015 at 10:53 am

I forgot one thing, if it was disrespectful, how come the priests didn’t take issue with it, or him?

Well, Debbie did pull up short of giving Spock the RIH epitaph.

I won’t disavow being a big fan of TOS, but then I was young and knew nothing of the actor’s backgrounds. His book of photos was pretty gross.

Funny thing about the hand gesture, which I never knew the history of until reading this article by Debbie. I was told decades ago that no one but people with Jewish blood were physically capable of actually performing it.

I thought that was a lot of nonsense. Funny thing though, as the years progressed, I actually witnessed many people try and fail to do it. I don’t remember too many people without Jewish blood actually being able to physically perform it. LOL!!!

The Irish really suck at trying it. I have NO idea why!!! ROTFLMAO!!!

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on March 1, 2015 at 9:00 pm

I veeeery rarely disagree with Debbie, and certainly not on this type of column. But I find myself unconvinced.

Nimoy wasn’t Orthodox, obviously. But he was openly Jewish at a time when this was not a given. Indeed, Shatner was rather “closeted” by contrast. In his best role, Denny Crane in Boston Legal, he was Christian–and this was years later, when being Jewish was no big deal.

I always interpreted his hand gesture as a coded reference to Judaism in a Hollywood that wanted nothing Jewish, despite all the JINOs there. I did not interpret it as contemptuous.

Also, his pictures of nearly nude women with tefillin, while deeply sinful from an Orthodox perspective, did not, I think, indicate Nimoy’s contempt for Judaism–just his deep, personal ignorance of Jewish values. What, really, did his parents teach him to err in such an aggregious way? I have read about what he thought he was depicting in such photos. This was not a Tony Kushner contempt for Judaism.

Nor can I blame him ENTIRELY for his Piss Now support. For it is true enough that Israeli elites have been appallingly supportive of a so-called two-state solution as well. One cannot be more Catholic than the Pope (unless one knows that the Pope in this case is “Israeli first” and not “Jewish first”).

Nimoy should have known better. But I get the feeling that he was not maliciously anti-Jewish the way so many JINOs are. So, I will say goodbye to him fondly.

skzion on March 1, 2015 at 9:14 pm

Interesting perspective, thanks sk. And yes, typing anything more than three words on a phone sucks, LOL!!!

Indeed, Americans, like all other peoples, have over time used a cut and paste philosophy to develop the “gorgeous mosaic” (LOL!!!) of their “belief systems.” The Bible says that humans do these things constantly, and have since the beginning of time, worshiping God in our own way.

We do these things in a seemingly innocent fashion, and it is certainly possible to have the perspective that sk lends to this discussion. But one day God will teach us all to live His way all the time.

Adam and Eve did what they did in seeming innocence. But in reality, they failed an important test. They rejected God’s government by their actions, and started a chain reaction that has lasted until this day. That is, the human race constantly living its own way, in seeming innocence.

But it brings us all our troubles, which is why I can also applaud and appreciate Debbie’s perspective on Nimoy as well.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on March 1, 2015 at 9:50 pm

His hand sign wasn’t contemptuous. From Leonard’s owns words:

For what would soon become known as the Vulcan salute, I borrowed a hand symbol from Orthodox Judaism. During the High Holiday services, the Kohanim (who are the priests) bless those in attendance. As they do, they extend the palms of both hands over the congregation, with thumbs outstretched and the middle and ring fingers parted so that each hand forms two vees.

This gesture symbolizes the Hebrew letter shin, the first letter in the word Shaddai, `Lord.’ … So it was that, when I searched my imagination for an appropriate gesture to represent the peace-loving Vulcans, the Kohanim’s symbol of blessing came to mind.

Now if this man had no respect for the Jewish sign, I doubt he would state these words from his book.

Think Again on March 1, 2015 at 11:24 pm

More of Leonard’s Words:

In the blessing, the Kohanim (a high priest of a Hebrew tribe) makes the gesture with both hands, and it struck me as a very magical and mystical moment. I taught myself how to do it without even knowing what it meant, and later I inserted it into “Star Trek.” There was a scene in one episode that needed something. People were seeing other members of the Vulcan race for the first time, and I thought it called for a special gesture.

Again, I believe he meant no harm

Ken B on March 2, 2015 at 7:14 pm

Sorry for that errant post. Trying to type from my not so smart phone. What I was going trying to say is that I’m a big Star Trek fan. As a matter of fact I just got done watching The Wrath of Khan. All I can say is that Kristy Alley was one good looking Vulcan and Ricardo Montalban was the man. Too bad that Nimoy as it turns out was a creepy weirdo that liked pictures a naked fat women. I know to each his own but that’s just all kinds of nasty. That and the fact he was an anti-Israeli Jew. No wonder our first ferengi president liked him so much. Dr Spock made Nimoy an icon an despite his many proclivities that’s how I’ll remember him. Now where did I put that Star Trek 3 dvd.

Ken B on March 2, 2015 at 7:45 pm

From everything I’ve seen, Nimoy was a pretty great guy. Characterizing his celebration of the beauty of non-skinny women as a “fetish” is just bizarre. Also, there are entirely too many legitimate reasons to be critical of the state of Israel. Some people go too far in their unmitigated hatred of it, but demanding utter worship for it, giving it more aid than we give all of Africa put together, and mischaracterizing criticism of it as antisemitic is just dumb.

And once again we see people failing to deal with religion no longer being so absurdly privileged as it used to be. The fact that you believe something is true does not mean anyone else is particularly obligated to respect it, and it isn’t in itself any kind of condemnation of their character if they don’t.

Raven on March 3, 2015 at 9:47 pm

Blackbird, quit your annoying squawking. Your anti-Semitism couldn’t be more obvious, being evident early on when you (incorrectly) comment on aid to Israel being greater than to all of Africa. Given that aid to Egypt has traditionally been 2/3 that of aid to Israel, and that Egypt is in Africa, your claim is manifestly incorrect.

    Never more!

The correct term for the branch of Judaism is “Reform Judaism “,notReformed”,which Debbie uses perjoratively. Also, although there were aspects of Mr. Nimoy’s history that Debbie (and I ) did not agree with, the tone of this article is so mean-spirited thar it denies the generous aspect of “k’lal Yisrael “. Excuse my phonetic spelling.
