Debbie Schlussel: "Munich" Watch: No Oscar Effect for Shlemielberg

By Debbie Schlussel

As today's USA Today reports, generally there is an "Oscar effect" for films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

That means that the weekend after Oscar nominations is traditionally a strong one for the nominated films. But not so for Steven Spielberg's "Munich," the film that morally equivocates Islamic terrorists with the law enforcement who try to stop them; and says that we shouldn't fight the War on Terror.

Shlemielberg: Movie Audiences Prefer "When A Stranger Calls" to "When Soft on Terror Calls"

Despite the Hollywood culturatti's bestowing of five Oscar nominations on Shlemielberg's film, it did not see a pick-up at the box office, despite adding 171 screens. "Munich" is in 16th place after the weekend, earning only $1.675 million.

We think it's great that, while Shlemielberg's "Munich" never hit the top five at the box office, on "Oscar Effect" weekend, the number one film is NOT one of these silly political nominees but a non-political, if bad and unnecessary, remake of "When a Stranger Calls" (which made almost $22 million).

So sad, too bad, Shlemielberg. Oh, and, by the way, "Have you checked the children?"
