Debbie Schlussel: Jill Carroll on NPR: Audio of a Sixties Fan

By Debbie Schlussel

A reader sent me this audio link to Jill Carroll's pronouncements as a caller ("Jill from Ann Arbor") to NPR ("National Palestinian Radio"), glorifying the Sixties. Frankly, we're far more concerned by her statements about America, the Bible, Israel, and the War in Iraq. But still, it's interesting.

Carroll's call begins at about 15 minutes, 8 seconds in and ends at about 17:48. She claimed that before the Sixties, "unless you were white, male, straight, and had some money" (are those the Jill Carroll enemies?), you didn't have freedom. She believes "the main goal" and end result "of the Sixties was freedom for everyone."

Really? Silly us, we thought it was about strung-out, pachouli-infused hippies, Black Panthers killing cops, pulling out of Vietnam and spitting in the face of our troops, anti-War protesters, the Weathermen bombers, free love and sexually transmitted diseases, feminism and the breakdown of the family, bra burning, children in single mother households, and children of divorce.

Yup, that's what freedom's all about.
