Debbie Schlussel: Against the Ropes: Bryant Gumbel Arrogance v. Spineless NFL

By Debbie Schlussel

Yesterday, we reported on Bryant Gumbel's arrogant declaration that he will pontificate on all things political and otherwise while he's calling 8 games for the NFL Network--beginning, of all days, on Thanksgiving. Appropriate for a turkey on Turkey Day.

We mentioned his comments about White athletes and his on-air obscenity-laced tirade against a conservative commentator (an FCC violation for sure).

That part didn't bother the spineless NFL "leadership." But Gumbel crossed even their line when he insulted outgoing NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Now, the NFL is considering getting rid of racist, arrogant Gumbel. Reports USA Today:

Bryant Gumbel: Dump Him From NFL Network Broadcasts
In one of his last acts as NFL commissioner, Paul Tagliabue might push to fire the NFL Network's highest-profile hire: Bryant Gumbel. . . .

Tagliabue said he'll review whether Gumbel should continue with the channel with incoming Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Network President Steve Bornstein.

Don't hold your breath, though. New York Times sports columnist Richard Sandomir notes that Tagliabue picked the offensive Gumbel in the first place. And probably doesn't have the guts to fire him.

Now, if Gumbel were White and surnamed Limbaugh (as one of our smart readers pointed out), it would be a different story. Or rather, the end of the story.
