"Superman Returns" Update: Previous Supe Attacks New Supe
There is strength in numbers. And a growing, diverse group of critiques join me in my criticisms of "Superman Returns" and the new, slutty, single momster Lois Lane.
The latest is Dean Cain, TV's most recent Superman. He agrees with me that the Lois Lane portrayal to kids was just bad. Here's what Cain told USA Today:
Q: How does Kate Bosworth compare to Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane?A: Teri's Lois had a hard exterior with a real soft interior. The whole thing with Lois having a child (a 5-year-old son, Jason) in the film was a little unsettling. I have a child (Christopher Dean Cain, 6) and that changes things. Lois Lane is always going to be an intrepid reporter, but I would never bring my child to a place where he could possibly get in danger - yet she does, which was kind of surprising.

I don't want to give away the plot, but it is obvious from what happens at the end of the film why Lois "kept the baby". Or didn't you stay to watch the end?

I found the movie boring and, to be honest, could not find a plot in there. I did not care for the single mother element, though as KOAJaps mentions, there is a very good reason why she kept the child...the even she may not have realized why.

One thing I noticed was the absence of the American Way when on his return Superman was asked what he still stood for and he replied Truth and Justice, and then left it at that. My memory recalls it being Truth, Justice, and the American Way. That's a big slip up on Superman's part and an indication of P.C. thinking and appeasement on the script writers who omitted the line. I guess Hollywood doesn't want to offend those overseas revenues? Bad times for America when you take a character that represents what it is to be American and then neuter him into some kind of liberal eunuch.
HAVE A GREAT INDEPENDANCE DAY!

Curiously, real life reporter Veronica Guerin sometimes had her son Cathal with her despite the dangerous places and people she exposed. She was murdered in 1996, as most may know, by the ruthless Irish gangsters whose threats (ultimately fulfilled) she ignored; the plaque honoring her states "Be Not Afraid". Lois Lane is just fiction and so is Superman; no, I won't see the movie. I will, however, rewatch Cate Blanchet as Veronica Guerin.

After reading interviews with the script writers I wouldn't go see this trash for free after reading how they deliberately took out "the American Way" out of "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" slogan.

Then I hope you don't like Superman much. Because the "And the American Way" doesn't appear in the comics for decades, most of the old radio serial, all movie serials, the Fleischer cartoons, the recent animated series and the Lois and Clark TV show. Why Dean Cain doesn't get to be photoshopped with the PC? is his body the photo is using anyway.
Oh, and the first Chris Reeve movie? I don't know if ny of you noticed but the phrase was used satirically.

The original TV Superman, George Reeves, was superlative as BOTH Clark and Superman. His Clark was confident and strong. He didn't need to resort to the cartoon clowning that Christopher and this latest incarnation put on.
I did like Dean Cain's Clark and Superman, however I think Terry Hatcher is a witch (unfortunately I worked on a movie with her... I didn't originate the term "witch") and kept hoping Superman would show up just a little too late.
I agree with the observation about this current Lois being a slut, but let's remember that Superman 2 felt they had to resort to the seemingly obligatory bed scene between Superman and Lois. I never felt deprived during the entire original series that Clark and Lois never "did it".
I saw "Superman Returns" this past Saturday in one of the hotbeds of liberal culture.. the SAG Film Society. I couldn't restrain myself, though, at the glaring omission of "the American Way". It came out of my mouth involuntarily... loudly and indignantly.
There were a couple of nice touches though. Always nice to see old cast members: Jack Larson as the bartender. And I did laugh when Lois, Perry and Jimmy Olson were looking at Jimmy's blurred shot of Superman trying to figure it out and they said "It's a bird", "It's a plane"....
Now excuse me. I have to go to Amazon and order the original series on DVD.
