America's Attack on Males: Why Are Boys Struggling in School?
I've written plenty of posts aobut the declining percentages of male students in college. That's old news now. Only 43% of college students are men, according to the Census, and that figure continues to decline.
It's kind of obvious why. Women are pushed to succeed--with discriminatory, sexist scholarships, affirmative action, and any number of other programs deeming them an "under-represented" minority, when with 57% of the student body, they are anything but. Then, there are the cultural attacks on men and boys throughout the media, entertainment, and every other arena.
So what do teachers and sociologists do? Well, if you're Ron Mason, chairman of Wichita State University's sociology department, you produce a silly study, saying the decline of men in school and college is due to "not enough household chores" for boys.
Come on. Doing work traditionally associated with women never made men achieve more. And it has nothing to do with society's attack on males in America.
An article in the Wichita Eagle cites that absurdity. But it also features some other factors that are more likely causes--in addition to the affirmative action push for women--the decline of hard work and increasing softness pushed upon males in America (ie., the feminization of America's boys):
The baseball coach at Wichita State, Gene Stephenson, says he has watched a generational drop-off in passion for life, knowledge, self-sacrifice and work, let alone for ball. . . ."I'm really disappointed in how they no longer have the zest, not just for baseball but for knowledge, and for the joys that come when you take responsibility and learn to do something really well," he said.
His Shockers won a national championship in 1989. He said his 2007 players do not want to work as hard as those champions.
"You realize... I'm recruiting the cream of the crop. Wonderful guys. But they don't have the work ethic or consistent performance or the tolerance for pain that guys used to have."
It's difficult to have the zest for life and hard work, when you are being told that scholarships are not open to you and you are not the "preferred" minority merely because of your sex organs and internal plumbing.
Just ask agents at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), where many inexperienced women are getting affirmative action extraordinaire into cush positions, merely because of their gender. Experienced, more qualified male agents are being passed over, under the "leadership" of ICE chieftess Julie L. Myers a/k/a "The ICE Princess" and ICE Director of Investigations Marcy "Black Ass' Forman-Friedman a/k/a "Peppermint Patty."

Now that you mentioned it, my cousin is having a hard time getting accepted into graduate school because of his social/racial status as a white male with a GPA of 4.0. White heterosexual women also face a similar problem.

During my college years, I would see 19 year old, attractive female students get jobs that were advertised for people with experience and degrees (experience and degrees needed only if you're not an attractive young female apparently). Maybe a lot of men are realizing that they can't compete for those cozy office-type jobs anymore, so they're sticking to the jobs that only men can do; trade/repair/mechanical type jobs...

I first went to college in the 1970's. I returned in the mid 1990 to get another degree. Boy was I in for a shock, college is nothing like it used to be.
College today is outright hostile to men. They treat men as second class citizens and utter contempt. The classes for the most part are being taught by Feminists and class discussions inevitably center on how women are being discriminated against by the evil men who run this country.
IMHO-College has turned into re-education camps teaching young women they are entitled to every thing on a silver platter without teaching hard work and merit matter.
Any man that can put up with 4 years of what they call college deserves an award for just completing the tortuous climate on campus.
What is even worse is the jobs market for men. They do not hire on merit but by sex. It is no wonder that men are refusing to participate.
My brother has been with an fortune 500 insurance company for 22 years and his office has gone from about 70% men to 98% women. He is one of only two men left that still work in the district office. He has been turned down for promotions despite having a better resume and experience.
I have always wondered how you can be a minority when your sexual group is a majority. Any idiot can look up the census numbers, provided of course, they went to college before history was re-written.

Absolutely right ScootyDog. I actually just graduated college with a Mathematics and Economics degree on December '06 so my experience is very recent, and you're correct in calling the experience tortuous. I have tons of stories of the outright discrimination that goes on which favors women.
I was hoping to put all of that behind me once I graduated, but once while searching for a job, one place told me outright that they only hire women.

Greetings everyone, this is my first time here so please excuse any poor grammer/spelling. Now that being said, I read the accompanying article and it was disturbing to say the least. The one part I was curious about was the inequity I have heard about in the prescription (often mandated) of drugs to boys in school ie Ritalin et al to control the "fidgiting". Anyone know the real percentages or have heard the same thing? I believe the story I heard about was a study from the UK showing a HUGE difference.

Interesting comment by the baseball coach. I wonder if this is related to the frantic desire on the part of many parent to make everything *about getting in to a top college*....so, instead of playing baseball because you love it, or doing science or drama work because you love it, you do these things because they are checklist items on the ol' resume. It's easy to see how activities could lose their savor...
