Viva America: U.S. Kicks Cuba's Butt to Win Baseball World Cup

By Debbie Schlussel

For the first time since 1974, the U.S. won baseball's World Cup. And to put the whip cream and cherry on top, we also ended Cuba's winning streak of nine straight titles. The U.S. beat Cuba 6-3. This bodes very well for the U.S. Olympic Baseball Team.

Congrats to Team USA's Jayson Nix and Jason Jaramillo--who got two runs each--and Pitcher Brian Duensing, who was nearly perfect through the first three innings, yielding just one hit. In the past, Cuba has engaged in dirty tricks to win, but the U.S. was prepared, according to the Team USA website:

Knowing Cuba has a history of trying to take the completion out of its game by making questionable moves, the USA expected the unexpected and were not at all rattled.

I'm sure this was welcome news at the Castro Communist sickbed. Wonder if he'll assign people to whip the beaten Cuba team.

Hmmm . . . Maybe Michael Moore can do a "documentary" on how Cuba's play in the World Cup was really better than ours. And that the sport is really not as American as apple pie (well, he might have an argument there).

U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A!

Sweet! Was Tommy Lasorda the Manager for this team like he was for the gold medal-winning team in Sydney, Australia back in 2000?!

[YS: NO, I DON'T BELIEVE SO. HE WAS TOO BUSY COLLECTING $30K FROM IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT FOR A SPEAKING ENGAGEMENT. GO TO THE LINK. IT NAMES THE MANAGER. DS]

This is the same Cuban team that lost to the Dutch last week, so I don't think you guys beating them is anything to get excited about. (There are less than 7,000 baseball players in the whole of the Netherlands).

I didn't realize there was a baseball World Cup. I thought the new (if it ever gets repeated again) World Baseball Classic of 2006 was supposed to be the equivalent. Thanks for noting Deb.
