John Rambo's Terrorists
As readers will recall, when I met and interviewed Sylvester Stallone at the late 2006 Detroit premiere of "Rocky Balboa," I asked him about the plot of "Rambo"--the final installment of the "Rambo" series. (It debuts Friday). He told me it was about Rambo rescuing missionaries from terrorism. I asked him if they were Islamic terrorists. No, he told me, they are Burmese terrorists.
Well, I just got back from a screening of "Rambo." And while I'm prohibited from reviewing it until it comes out, this weekend, I do have this to say:
While I was watching over an hour of Asian men committing all kinds of bloody, graphic torture, rape of males and females, and murder against their own people and Americans, I thought to myself, can you imagine if the terrorists were Muslims?
I'm not saying the terrorists of Myanmar/Burma--the setting of this movie--don't do these things to their people. They definitely do. But so do Muslim governments and Islamic terrorists, who set the bar. Yet, no-one in Hollywood will dare make such a movie depicting this, post-9/11. After all, we must respect the "real victims" of 9/11--the religion of the perpetrators.
As I mentioned this to a critic from one of Detroit's major newspapers, he agreed, saying, "Yeah, they'd never make a movie like that. It would be very controversial."
I guess the Council on American-Myanmar Relations hasn't yet set up shop in America to whine, cajole, PC-ify, and sue the heck out of Hollywood.
I paraphrase George Orwell's "Animal Farm" often on this site. But it is so true:
All of the animals in the barnyard are equal. But some are more equal than others.
Asians are acceptable terrorists on the silver screen. Muslims and Arabs? Whitewash City.

Burmese terrorists (this is the first I'm hearing of them, and I do follow news in Asia, such as the Jihad in S Thailand) may indeed be guilty of these things, but they are completely restricted in their own backyard. They don't try exporting their ideology even to neighboring countries, like Thailand, India, let alone target eventual world domination.
The myriad Islamic Jihads worldwide, otoh, may have local ambitions, but ultimately sing out of the same playbook and are inspired by Jihadi successes anywhere. Therefore, it's criminal of Rambo to treat the Burmese here like they are a major threat.
As an aside, without revealing much about the movie, were the missionaries in question operating in Myanmar when they were accosted by the terrorists, or were these Myanmar terrorists operating in the West (like, say, Hizbullah in Buenos Aires) and decided to take on the missionaries?

As I recall about a week ago, Savage interviewed Stallone on his show in which Stallone explained why Burmanese terrorists were used in that movie as suppose to Al Qaeda which has no relations to p.c.

Very interesting. In interviews Stallone explains why he didn't write a movie about our greatest enemy. He said that a 90 minute movie where Rambo defeats America's greatest enemy (OBL) would have been disrespectful to our military. It sounded responable enough. After all he did pick actual bad guys (vs. ambiguous Eastern European Islamic terrorists). But there are plenty of battles against radical islam including the Philipines and Malaysia.
I guess in the end he choose the easiest path: give us a lame excuse while preserving his foreign movie sales. Rambo has bought into Superman's improved motto "Truth, Justice and All the Other Stuff".

So Deb, have started working on your movie project for Mark Cuban yet? If it's about Islamic terrorists, I'm sure John Voight would be more than happy to add his name to your project and help pitch it to Cuban.

I'm just grateful Stallone didn't set the movie in the South and make the bad guys part of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.
