HOprah Watch: Does Oprah Practice Apartheid? It Appears She Does

By Debbie Schlussel
Does Oprah practice apartheid?
Today, on self-absorbed Oprah’s XM radio station, HRHSBOtU (Her Royal Highness Supreme Being of the Universe) Oprah is broadcasting the opening ceremony of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, which took place today.
The broadcast, conceitedly entitled “My Tomorrow” by Oprah, should probably be subtitled, “The New Apartheid.” You see, Oprah personally handpicked the 152 girls who will attend her new South African school.

And based on photos, it appears not a single one of the girls she picked is White. When I first heard about Oprah doing the admissions, herself, last spring, I contacted her Harpo Studios to find out whether Oprah chose any Whites for the school. An Oprah press person called me back and told me they’d get back to me with the racial make-up of the entering classes of Oprah’s Academy. Now, months later, they never did.
And it appears there are no White students. Were none of the 3,500 applicants White? Were Whites told they need not apply? Are there no South African White female “teens and preteens from poor and troubled backgrounds”? Since Oprah calls the girls her “dreamgirls,” would love to know the answers. But, alas, I didn’t get any.
For someone who opposed apartheid and openly preaches harmony of the races, it appears HRHSBOtU doesn’t practice what she preaches. Rape of young White girls is now at epidemic proportions in South Africa. You’d think that one of these victims would benefit from attending Oprah’s posh new school–complete with yoga studio and beauty salon.

Oprah Academy: No Whites Allowed?

But apparently, there is not room on the posh, $40 million, 22-acre complex for any White young women. If there were, I’d think the Oprah people would get back to me with that information. But they haven’t.
And based on her broadcast conversations with Friend Gayle King, Oprah apparently doesn’t really like White people all that much.
Well, she can get away with it in South Africa. But if she refused all White candidates or didn’t encourage them to apply to a school in the U.S., she’d be violating civil rights laws.

It appears that males need not apply at this school, either.
Could you imagine if some Conservative opened a school exclusively for male students?!
What hypocrisy. In Oprah’s case, it’s “Hopocrisy!”

“But if she refused all White candidates or didn’t encourage them to apply to a school in the U.S., she’d be violating civil rights laws.”
Unless, of course, Hoprah’s new school was near her estate on Maui:

Oh yes, my bad, of course discriminating against whites is fully protected by the US constitution. At least according to the Ninth Circuit.

Grant on January 2, 2007 at 2:18 pm

Are there any Indian girls allowed in this school? They were discriminated against under the apartheid system too.

I think it is the duty of every successful and wealthy black person to give back to the black community. It’s important that black people help other black people.

I’m very happy that 152 underprivileged girls will have a chance at life thanks to Oprah Winfrey. May God continue to bless her.

Wow, a $40-million school for 152 students? Is Oprah stupid, too?

Dan on January 2, 2007 at 7:31 pm

$40 million to HOprah is like $40 to you and me.
Who’d want to go to her stupid school, anyway?
Why only 152? Why not as many as want to go? Even another $40 million is nothing to HOprah. Why isn’t Bill Gates and Warren Buffett annointed since they are giving far more than HOprah?
I’m still not convinced the $40 million is coming out of her pockets, either, as I’ve heard this before, such as those “free” cars.

If Christian Children’s Fund can feed and clothe a child for whatever piddly amount of money per year, no doubt Oprah could be putting her money to better use. I’m no philosophical utilitarianist, but $40 million spent on 152 kids for a few years of education is obscene.

I wonder if Oprah will come to Watts and build schools here? I don’t live in Watts, they may think I’m Korean, remember 1992? Naw.

KOAJaps on January 3, 2007 at 5:33 am

Actually there were some white girls chosen. Anyway what difference does it make? A good deed is a good deed is a good deed. Come on Debbie, you are way to critical here.

The criteria for acceptance into the new school is based on income and not race. I just so happens that will all the diamonds and minerals in South Africa, most of the poor people are black. Hmm I wonder how that happened? Leave Oprah alone and deal with some real issues. It seems that once again, white people can not stand for anyone else to have anything as good or better than them. Grow Up!

You MUST understand that every black has equal or BETTER, more protected rights in this country than do whites. STOP with the race card whining! Go to school, get an education and quit blaming us whites for YOUR stupidity or lower I.Q. scores. Yeah, I said it.

Enough of the pity party – let’s face it full on: OPRAH FAVORS BLACKS! She could NEVER open an all-black school here in America because I’d be the FIRST in court to complain and file my lawsuit! Don’t you all want to end segregation?

“I don’t have to please the white people of this country”, said Oprah. NO, you DON’T!
But you sure do like our money enough to try and keep it a bit on the “white” side now and then. We’re getting sick of self-inflated Ms. O. Her show is even boring! She needs to go away for awhile and do some REAL charity, hands-on! Sell a few houses and help white American children! It’s their moms who keep you in business!

By the way my fiance said, “slavery is over, stop using it”. Step outside the box and work like the rest of us. Don’t look for a special college fund, school, or victim advocacy group. Just GET OVER IT already! Statistics have proven that you (a black woman) have increased fear when shown photos of non-expressive black men, as do white women. However, as stated earlier, rape amongst white females is up in South Africa. OPRAH, HELP! White women need rape center. Have an extra 40 mill for a spa resort for the recently-raped-by-black-man white women?

Was I the only one who heard Ms. Winfrey?s comment when asked during the opening ceremony why there where no white students? Ms. Winfrey?s snide response to the question was and I quote, ?I don?t have to please the white people of this country!?

Oprah in a KKK hood? That’s a low blow. The KKK killed people, Debbie. Shame on you.
Apparantly you can’t grasp the distinction between apartheid, which was segregation coercively enforced by the state, and what goes on at Oprah’s private school. I don’t like the fact that she is only picking black girls for the school — I think that’s wrong — but it’s her money and her school.

wow really ? .. so if a bunch of white businessmen go around opening up schools for ‘whites only’ that’s ok right ? after all it’s their money
