“X-Men: First Class” – So, Now, It’s Bad to Want to Kill Nazis?

By Debbie Schlussel

You know times have really changed when the superheroes of yesteryear who were applauded for pursuing Nazis have been replaced by superheroes who deplore the pursuit of Nazis and men who are “arch villains” for killing Nazis.  Maybe it’s because it might offend Muslims, Pat Buchanan, and Lars Von Trier. Sadly, that 180 in what makes one a “superhero” is stark in “X-Men: First Class,” the X-Men prequel, which debuts in theaters today.

I absolutely loved the first half of this movie.  It’s the second half that completely ruined it for me.  Not only was it a mess, but the ultimate message of the movie is that it’s a bad thing for a Holocaust survivor to want to go after the Nazi doctor who murdered his mother–that vengeance is bad.  Huh?

Also, sorry comicbookland-cum-Hollywood, but your stories about the West and the Communists being coaxed into Cold War nuclear war by evildoers is getting old and very stale.  Anything to avoid touching on a more current battle, like the West versus Islam, right?

We watch a young kid with superpowers to move things with his mind taken from his mother in a concentration camp into the offices of a Mengele-esque Nazi doctor, Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon–hey, more connections for “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon!”).  When Shaw cannot make the child do his mind-bending feats, he kills the kid’s mother in front of his eyes.  The kid kills a few Nazis, but spares the doc, which I didn’t get.  Then, the kid grows up with the numbers tattooed on his arm as a reminder.  He goes to Argentina to hunt the Nazi doc.  The scene, in which he encounters two immigrant German “farmers” in a Buenos Aires bar, is fantastic.  And I love what he does to them.

Eventually this Holocaust survivor (played by the talented German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender) is recruited into the X-Men, which is originally assembled by a CIA doctor whose science fiction realities are pooh-poohed by jaded, chauvinistic CIA brass.  The group is assembled by a female CIA agent (Rose Byrne) who discovers Shaw’s partner in crime, supervillain Emma Frost (January Jones), when she is spying on a wayward general in Vegas.  Shaw has learned how to get super powers and consume energy, staying youthful and powerful, after years of training and watching the Holocaust survivor do his magic.

Now, it’s the Cold War, and Shaw and Frost are trying to get the U.S., Cuba, and the Soviets to start a nuclear war against each other.  Why?  They don’t say.  They’re just evil, and Hollywood can’t come up with anything better when they try so hard to avoid Islam.  Oh, and one other thing interesting (or not so interesting, depending on your take): Shaw’s devil-like co-villain, Azazel, has a name that is the anglicized pronunciation of the Hebrew word for “hell”:  azazel.  Hmmm . . . .

To fight these villains a scientist from England, Charles Xavier, and his transmorphic superhero female friend from childhood, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), help the CIA team find and recruit people with various powers to join the X-Men.  But eventually, after some violent fights between the X-Men and Shaw and his henchment, one of them, Angel (a human fly played by Zoe Kravitz, Lenny’s daughter with Lisa Bonet), joins Kevin Bacon’s team of villains, with little explanation as to why.

Oh, and why put a naked superhero in a kids’ movie–a superhero movie you know young kids will see? Raven is shown topless. And while, apparently, her form of superhero doesn’t have nipples, the kids might as well be watching a topless blue stripper with pasties on. Same difference. Thanks, Hollywood, for the gratuitous breast reveal in a kids’ superhero movie. Every comic book geek weirdo fantasizes about what a chick superhero looks like naked. Wonder no more, kids. Kinky, right? … and more suited to Larry Flynt’s kind of X than the X-Men kind.

Like I said, the second half of the movie ends up being a mess of special effects, fighting, and useless left-wing peacenik-isms.  Uh, no thanks.  And again, eventually, the Holocaust survivor–who gets the name Magneto–is a “villain” because he wants to kill the Nazi doctor who murdered his mother.  Absurd.  What’s next, 50 years from now, they’ll be doing movies showing Navy SEALS as supervillains for killing Osama Bin Laden?

With the symbiosis of ever-increasing Islamic immigration to America and Islamo-pandering in Hollywood, don’t count it out.  And, hey, it’s already been done. . .  by Steven Spielberg with “Munich” (read my review).

Go to it to see the first half, then leave. You won’t be missing much. There ain’t nothin’ “First Class”–or, even, first–about this messy piece of leftism.

Watch the trailer . . .

Hollywood is missing out on interesting stories. But we can’t show Islam in a bad light.

The only acceptable villains are Communists, Serbian terrorists, Jews and of course Americans. There are no other kind in Hollywood’s view of the world.

No wonder X-Men was boring. And it’ll be like that in the future.

Well, then maybe the scene of the encounter in the Buenos Aries bar just might worth the price for the rental when it comes out on DVD-I’ll wait.

You’re a dumb fucking bitch. You’re statements are both off topic and have nothing to do with the movie itself.

Please kill yourself or jump in traffic.

Yours truly, the internet.

Tom Sizemore on June 3, 2011 at 7:05 pm

    Stay classy, now Tom!

You really elevate discourse with that kind of language.

I guess criticism does upset you. No one is forcing you to read the review here.

Go take your hateful rant elsewhere!

NormanF on June 3, 2011 at 7:08 pm

    Hey Tom,
You might want to invest in some grammar lessons before you go rantin’ again on the internet thingy.

Folks like aren’t him “superheroes.” Not in my book.

NormanF on June 3, 2011 at 7:11 pm

The movie is rated PG-13. Find me a 13 year old kid who doesn’t know what tits are and then you can make a point. Reading your tag cloud alone tells me you’re a worthless slut begging for attention on fox news? Grats you’re on the most debunked news channel in the world. Try losing some weight. Exercising helps.

Charles Xavier on June 3, 2011 at 7:15 pm

Teen boys already know what a teen girl looks like. So?

For the record, Debbie Schlussel isn’t with Fox News. And your personal comments reveal a great deal about the psychopathology of the Left. You’re soo obsessed with other people’s appearance.

You are one-dimensional and let’s face it, you know you can’t come close in coming up with something original like this site’s webmaster does and that sticks in your craw.

NormanF on June 3, 2011 at 7:21 pm

Norman…. It enrages me to know that there are people this stupid blogging. And that there are people as retarded as you Norman, who stand up for this woman who says the most asinine things.

You are feeble Norman.

Charles Xavier on June 3, 2011 at 7:26 pm

I choose my friends. Judging from your attitude, I’d be surprised you have yours in the circles in which you travel.

Charles Xavier has done more for cripples than you will ever know. My single greatest regret is that he had to be crippled for our dream to live.

Apparently, lefties are as upset by Debbie’s take on the comic book myth as they were at her dismissal of Lara Logan!

We’re seeing plenty of that tonight.

Exactly Norman, and guess what Norm, take a good look at the poster who impersonated you at “8:08 pm”, I think this is the same jerk who copied my name, Jon Grant’s name and other’s on this page. To the person who’s impersonating Norman, why don’t you have the balls and write any of you post under your own screen name instead of copying people’s screen names on this website. More likely DS is going to ban the person who’s been impersonating some of us on this site, because Debbie can trace all of our IP address and can put 2-@-2 together and come up with four and can tell who’s who on this website.

NormanF on June 3, 2011 at 9:03 pm

As I first read your review i tried to keep in mind your unfamiliarity with the source material and was excited that you would be approaching this movie unbiased by the American comic culture. But after reading some of your blatantly false facts about the presentation of the movie and its character’s history I was greatly disappointed. I find myself pushed toward the assumption that you judged this movie not by its merits but by the stereotypical view of what a comic has to be. As for possibly the more intriguing interpretation of the character Magneto and his quest for vengeance i would argue the death of Shaw(Kevin Bacon) was evil not because it was an act of vengeance(which I sympathize with) but because it subverted due process and the stainless justice provided by the law.
Magneto also supports the subjugation of the human race by mutant kind. So that’s pretty evil if your still in need of some convincing.

C.H. Smith on June 3, 2011 at 8:39 pm

Who are you idiots to say what a “superhero” really is? They’re fucking made up. They could be a fucking ex Nazi depending on who is drawing them and who they’re being fed to.

MattSG on June 3, 2011 at 8:40 pm

I can heartily recommend ‘Ilsa:She wolf of the SS’. A fly on the wall documentary about camp life in the SS. It shows just what those terrible Nazis were capable of. You have to excuse the graphic shots of ladies private parts and the, I feel, unnecessary depiction of female masturbation and penetration with a dildo.
It really angered me to watch it though.
Those dirty blonde foul minded filthy filthy nazi queens…

“men who are arch villains for killing nazis”
Killing is wrong, no matter who it is being killed.
Heroes shouldn’t have to kill, otherwise how could they be heroes?

“The ultimate message of the movie is that […] vengeance is bad. Huh?”
Vengeance is bad, killing someone for killing a loved one makes you just as bad a person as your enemy.

“Anything to avoid touching on a more current battle”
First class is a “prequel” to the x-men films, set way before them, why on earth would the west versus islam have anything to do with this? The cold war was the next thing after Nazis.

“Oh, and why put a naked superhero in a kids’ movie–a superhero movie you know young kids will see? ”
Its PG-13. Also, I forgot that sex was a bad thing and that no child has ever seen a nipple before. What if the character was wearing a blue bikini top? Would that somehow make it better even though either way there is still no ACTUAL nudity?

“Every comic book geek weirdo fantasizes about what a chick superhero looks like naked”
Your review just lost any credibility. You can’t just throw that in and think people will take you seriously.

“Magneto–is a “villain” because he wants to kill the Nazi doctor who murdered his mother. ”
The moral is that killing, no matter how you try to justify it, is wrong.

“What’s next, 50 years from now, they’ll be doing movies showing Navy SEALS as supervillains for killing Osama Bin Laden?”
Okay you’re just stupid. Its that simple. You can’t compare the actions of a FICTIONAL character who had a vendetta to a terrorist who killed a hell of a lot of innocent people.

What is your problem with Islam? Have you forgotten that the whole basis of American society was people escaping were they lived for a better life in a new place? Is it so wrong for the people of Islam to want what your founding fathers wanted?

God damn it people like you piss me off so hard.

declitorization, amputation of limbs, head stoning which is throwing rocks at a person these sand monkeys buried in the ground with only their head above, bashing rocks into the head until the brains are bashed out, killing homosexuals, beheading – THESE PEOPLE ARE SLIME THE SCUM OF THE EARTH AND ALL SHOULD BE DEPORTED FROM THE WEST. A WORLD WAR IS COMING. THAT THEY WILL CAUSE BY THEIR OVERBREEDING. THEN THEY WILL BE CLEANSED OUT OF HERE LIKE THEY ONCE WERE FROM EUROPE. CLEANSING TIME NEARS FOR THEM SOON IN EUROPE TOO.

Eichman you freaking neo-nazi (your screenname says it all), you don’t know what the hell your talking about. For you to say that we were attacked on 9/11/01 was because we helped Israel to kill Palestinian people is a complete LIE and BS. First off stupid, the Palestinians have been doing that crap to Israel for years and counting. Apparently you didn’t get the memo about the Fogel family being killed by your butt-plug friends the Palestinians. You see Eichman, the Fogel family were killed on a friday evening in Israel (the beginning of the sabbath) by Palestinian islamist, they killed the Fogel family because they were jewish!

BTW, you don’t know NOTHING about US history, when the pilgrims came to this country in the 17th century, they came here for religious freedoms, because in their native country of Great Britian, they couldn’t practice their religion because King Henry VIII wanted Catholicism to be the religion of Britian and the pilgrims were “Protestants”! If muslims want to practice their religion in this country, that’s fine with me, nobody is saying that muslims can’t practice their religion here (DS isn’t saying that either, and speaks fluent arabic BTW), but if theirs an imam who’s preaching hatred for the US and the western world, that mosque should be investigated by the government, because we all know what their capable of doing. And I assume some of the islamist in your country Eichman are preaching “whabbisim” in the mosques in your country? But then again, your just doing, “See no evil, hear no evil”!

“A nation is defined by it’s borders, language & culture!”

BTW DS… regardless what you say about the movie, I’d still see it. I love the X-Men because somehow we are all outcasts and iconoclasts in our own way. Of course in a 1000 years, if our descendants (or alien archaeologists) were to stumble on an micro-SD card of the flick (welcome to the 21st century, muthafuckaz!) they might say…

I’ll just save up for COD-BO.

Bill C. on June 4, 2011 at 12:27 am

I do love Marvel and X-men 1 and 2 were truely enjoyable movies. Comic book fns reading my comments will see my love for the source material.

This story between Charles and Erik had everything going for it by way of a fantastic storyline and if one just looked at the honest to goodness greatest superhero flick “Unbreakable” at the relationship between David and Elijah to see the potential that could’ve happened here and even on a larger scale true x-men fans should feel somewhat cheated. We had the opportunity to even go beyond “Spiderman 2” and that popular (don’t ask me why) Batman/Joker flick and had that movie for the ages, but instead a “Kick Ass” director felt he had something to prove with his cold war action plot and somewhere along the ways he forgot about what incredible material he originally had and took a wrong turn.

Thanks for the review Debbie. Erik/Magneto should’ve been grromed into becoming that truely enjoyable legendary villian but “First Class” chose a “No Class” director who couldn’t handle the best material a film director could ever wish for.

X-men might as well try out “Days of Future Past” since the moment has been lost. Maybe in 20 years they’ll reboot the series and we’ll get that movie we comic book lovers deserved. ’nuff said.

Fred on June 4, 2011 at 1:37 am

I have yet to see the movie, but from what I can gather, it looks like the writers and producers have tampered with X-Men continuity in a major way. The only team member in the movie I recognize as being from the first team in the comics is Hank McCoy a.k.a. the Beast. The others from the first team in the comics consisted of Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops, Jean Grey a.k.a. Marvel Girl, Bobby Drake a.k.a. Iceman, and Warren Worthington a.k.a. the Angel (the “Angel” that Debbie mentioned is apparently nothing even close to the original). All of the above appeared in previous X-Men films at some point. Raven Darkholme a.k.a. Mystique was NEVER a member of the X-Men and at one point almost succeeded in killing Charles Xavier in the comics.

I’ll try to keep an open mind when I do see it, though…

NormanF on June 4, 2011 at 5:05 am

I guess the decrepit culture that we suffer from today is bringing out its supporters.

There have not been very many anti-Communist movies by Hollywood; except for a few years after World War II, and during the Hitler-Stalin pact. Most of Hollywood’s pre-World War II has been plagued by the Hollywood 10, other communists and their fellow-travelers. By the mid-50s many of them were back, and from the 60s on, Hollywood was dominated by anti-anti-Communists, and anti-Communist films like Red Dawn were few and far between.

AFter World War II, the Government made a serious attempt to cleanse Hollywood of the Communists. It is too bad that there isn’t a similar effort today to cleanse Hollywood of the Muslim supporters and fellow-travelers.

Little Al on June 4, 2011 at 7:20 am

Wow! 100 comments over 1 person’s OPINION!

I agree with you, NormanF. Last time I checked, Canada was a free country, so I’ll take advantage of that fact and see the X-Men movie myself.

I’ll even go one further and not only post a review, but I’ll put it on YouTube and invite all the haters to see it.

Unlike some of the trolls, I do exist in real life. In fact, I have a real life.

Or do I?

The Reverend Jacques on June 4, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I read some X-Men comic books. Movies ruined the idea… again.
As for Magneto in comic book he indeed was a holocaust survivor, but was villan for something else.
He believed that it will come to global war between ‘regular’ people and mutants, and wanted to strike first, to protect mutants existence from new concentration camps and extermination.
He also believed that mutanst are future and there is no place for ‘regular’ people.
Magneto was not die-hard villan, and in time became more optimistic.

Norman, your absolutely correct, you can sue that waste of human DNA for libel, what he/she/it did to you was complete “libel” and you can find yourself a lawyer (Debbie can represent you bro) and sue that POS for libel.

I’m sure when Debbie returns and reads some of the garbage comments on this thread, she will trace that IP address and expose that thing for what it is. My advice for you Norman is to give DS an email and mention what that poster did to your reputation and more likely she’ll give you that posters email address and you can find yourself a lawyer & file a libel lawsuit against that good for nothing POS! I understand if any of the posters who disagree with you on any issue, but to start to libel you or any of us on this website is going way too far and has to be stop and is NO laughing matter.

Rats, I wanted to see this movie bad. I don’t believe in seeing only a partial movie. Either I see the whole movie, or I don’t see it at all. However, in light of Debbie saying above that the movie makes a son of a Holocaust survivor a bad guy for wanting to kill Nazis, I cannot and will not see this movie.

Now as for this one troll typing under various names and impersonating NormanF, Jonathan Grant, and Sean R, well, the less that I say about him, the better. But I do want to address one point that he’s made regarding his not liking Debbie’s review of this movie. It would be one thing if he were to say that this is not the movie’s message, that the message is something else totally different and they recognize that exerminating the Nazi vermin is in fact the Mitzvah that it is.

However, he is not making that argument at all. Instead he is confirming that the message of the movie is in fact what Debbie says that it is, but instead defends the indefensible. Therefore, this troll has actually persuaded me as much as Debbie that this movie is not worth seeing.
