Just as an American is sentenced to rot in Cuban prison for fifteen years for no legit reason, Barack Obama eases more restrictions on the Communist island nation of Cuba.
Alan Gross & Wife @ Israel’s Western Wall
Last week, the Obama administration announced the easing of restrictions on direct flights to Cuba, allowing several major cities in America to start taking off directly to the giant prison nation. The Obama-ites did this because they believe the Castro Bros dictatorship is “liberalizing.” How ironic that just after this move, the Cuban government responds by sentencing American citizen Alan Gross to 15 years in the ultimate hell: Cuban prison.
Last year, I told you about Gross. A U.S. Government contractor from Maryland, he brought computer gear to Cuba’s Jewish community, so its members could have internet access. I told you about this because the mainstream media was instead covering Raul Castro’s phony participation in a Cuban Jewish Chanukah celebration, while Gross rotted in jail for helping the same Jewish community. Yesterday, he was sentenced to fifteen years in Cuban prison for allegedly “working on a subversive U.S.-sponsored project aimed at undermining Cuba’s communist system.” And, as we all know, that’s baloney. He is a prisoner of conscience if there ever was one. Gross’ mission was far more noble and courageous than those of the unduly lauded Lara Logan, Laura Ling, etc.–who were in dangerous countries for their own selfish journalistic stardom. But don’t hold your breath for Bill Clinton to fly in on Al Gore’s plane to get Gross out of Cuban prison.
It will be interesting to see if Barack Obama has the decency to do anything about this, especially since Gross was working for the USAID, and was in the country on behalf of the U.S. government. Again, don’t hold your breath. After all, he was in a church for 22 years that preached that Jews are subhuman. So, by that “logic,” Gross is not worthy of American intervention or support. Don’t watch for Obama to hold up any flights to Cuba over him.
And it will be interesting to see if any of the many leftist Jewish rabbis and communities–including the unelected self-haters who run the Detroit Jewish community and sponsored trips to Cuba–will end their tacit support of this dictatorship that has imprisoned one of their own. Again, as with Barack Obama, don’t hold your breath.
I predict that next Chanukah, I’ll still be praying for the freedom of Alan Gross. I hope I’m wrong. I also hope I’m wrong in predicting that Jesse “Hymietown” Jackson will fly into Cuba to negotiate with his fellow America-haters for Gross’ release. Because we don’t need this anti-Semite shakedown king as our savior.
In any event, please say a prayer for Gross and contact your members of Congress. As I’ve noted before, one of my heroes, Cuban prisoner Armando Valladares’ book, “Against All Hope: A Memoir of Life in Castro’s Gulag,” a Must-Read, details what a torturous hell Cuban prisons are. It’s a hard to survive 15 minutes in one, let alone 15 years. And Gross is not young, as Valladares was for most of his prison stay. He is 61 years old. It is no exaggeration to say this is the same as sending a 61-year-old to the gulag and giving him a death sentence. As Cuba is not known particularly for its hospitality toward Jews, Gross’ ethnicity will make it doubly hard to endure the place.
Again, don’t just say a prayer but call every federal elected official you know to insist on pressure for Alan Gross’ release.
