Dumb to the Nth: Anti-Corporate Thugs Want Ronald McDonald Out

By Debbie Schlussel

Whatever happened to parental responsibility and parents teaching their kids a little responsibility and self-control?

Anti-corporate thugs are engaging in yet more stupid, PETA-style tactics . . . demanding the “retirement” of Ronald McDonald because he’s “too influential.”  Hilarious. As if that’s gonna happen.  Some left-wing outfit, calling itself “Corporate Accountability International,”  says that the famous redhead has too much influence on kids.

Hmmm . . . Ronald McDonald has been around for decades, and kids used to be thinner for much of his lifetime.  It’s not Ronald McDonald that’s the problem.  It’s parents who are too lazy to parent and restrict their kids from eating whatever they want whenver they want.  It’s parents who are too busy working and doing whatever else to parent.  It’s kids who are never taught discipline, self-control, and personal responsibility.

Yes, there are a lot of people in America who’ve influenced their kids to be blobs who always eat unhealthfully and at McDonald’s.  And those people should retire.  Unfortunately, they are womb and sperm donors who call themselves, “parents.”  Ronald McDonald has nothing to do with it.  For the record, I don’t even eat at McDonald’s because it’s not kosher, but I defend McDonald’s right to do business and use Ronald McDonald in that effort.

A coalition of health professionals, parents and corporate accountability advocates is calling for Ronald McDonald to retire as a spokesman for the nation’s largest restaurant chain, saying he has too much influence on kids.

Corporate Accountability International, which has waged campaigns against bottled water companies and tobacco companies, wants to stop the Oak Brook-based chain from gearing its advertising toward children in light of what they called a “fast-food-industry childhood obesity crisis.”

The group will release the results at a lunchtime “retirement party” Wednesday for McDonald’s Chief Happiness Officer, a 50-year veteran of the company, at the McDonald’s restaurant at Chicago Avenue and State Street.

The group — which was also behind the effort to retire Joe Camel from Camel cigarettes — will invite Chicagoans to sign retirement cards at the McDonald’s. The event is one of nearly two dozen to be held at McDonald’s restaurants and colleges across the country that day, according to group spokesman Nick Guroff.

By the way, when you consider things like the Ronald McDonald House for poor parents of sick kids, and other programs the fictional icon, Ronald McDonald, has been involved in, he’s actually done more for this country than any of these left-wing corporate activists in Chicago.

I remember seeing Ronald at a Mickey Dee’s back in the late ’60s and he scared the Hell out of me, what, with the cheap grease paint, cigarette breath and red scleras, but I continued to love McDonald’s in spite of him.

Its another attempt to deny people choice in this country. I bet those same anti-corporate thugs that want Ronald McDonald gone are the same folks who don’t mind the government running our lives.

..typical of the libs …and why I despise them…when they don’t like something, rather than just not partake in that activity, they want it banned for everyone…

After this CIA group finish banning fast-food companies, they’ll want to legalise marijuana and still attend their midnight cocaine parties. Why isn’t someone investigating these organizations and shining the light of truth on them.

When I was a kid growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, we only went to McDonald’s for a treat every now and then. My mom cooked every day for us and fast food was a rare thing…we were taught that this kind of food should not be eaten every day. Debbie is so right about parents being too lazy now to take responsibility for what their kids eat. It’s not McDonald’s fault…everything starts at home. What used to be an occasional treat is now being fed as every day meals. Duh…if your kid eats this stuff every day they WILL become obese! Stop trying to be your kid’s best friend – be a parent and say NO…and then maybe you can stop laying the blame on Ronald McDonald when your kid becomes fat. I swear, some people are just ridiculous!

This is stupid. What difference will Ronald McDonald make? I don’t think anyone’s buying McDonald’s because they want to be just like that big red clown, so having him retire isn’t going to make much of a difference. If they’re so concerned with the health of the children, why not campaign for smaller portion sizes or healthier menu options? Someone’s just trying to get attention…

also, for what it’s worth, I don’t necessarily think it’s a liberal thing – I went to one of the most liberal high schools in my state (Maryland, so that’s really saying something) and when they tried to ban unhealthy snacks from the vending machines, there was a major student-led protest. The majority of us really hated the idea of being told that certain foods were forbidden because some people couldn’t control themselves.

Should Ronald McDonald be Fired?

Debbie – you are correct but there is also a lot of hypocrisy.

Would any of those calling for the “retirement” of Ronald McDonald have called for the “retirement” of Brittany Spears (before she self destructed) or anyone else like her because of their influence on kids?

I’m sorry I stumbled on this site while looking for informed conversation about children’s health. Debbie, you’re doing a heck of a job shilling for the fast food industry, I must say. It’s as if corporate accountability precluded parental responsibility. You might also want to do just a touch of research, obesity has steadily and alarmingly risen during the clown’s lifetime. You may also want to look at disease rates globally as McDonald’s expands. Our kids are increasingly sick, please do your part as a news person to stop peddling simple-minded ideology. You, and other people somehow blessed with a forum such as this, have a responsibility to inform not just deliver fellow idealogs what they want to hear.

C: Corporations do have to be accountable. To their shareholders and their country. Not to a bunch of whining left-wing activists who haven’t a clue about how to raise kids and think McDonald’s, not parents, should be doing so. Sorry, but I don’t agree with the “it takes a village” BS. It takes a mom and dad who care. DS

I don’t often agree with Debbie, but in this case I couldn’t agree more. Great back story on why this group thinks getting rid of Ronald will make any difference- Debbie, great headline!

Friends and myself are wondering how we came help support Ronald. We don’t want him to retire. We agree that parents are not taking accountability. We know that most heavy set lazy parents with bad food habits pass those habits on to their children, begetting the next generation of heavy sey, lazy adults with horrible food habits. Is there a site or an organization supporting Ronald McDonald?

Who gave these thugs the right to demand any thing? Who gives them the right represent what Americans need or don’t need?
I and many others are sick of these kind, these big brother people. If any of you reading this are these people I want to tell you butt out, a pox be upon your Commie organizations. Go to Red China and see if you can tell your own kind what to do.
