Since When Do American Presidents Diss Our Fallen Troops on Meml Day? Since Obama, That’s When

By Debbie Schlussel

It was bad enough when Sean Hannity dissed the sacrifices and memories of our fallen troops by raising money in their name (the “Sean Hannity Freedom Concerts”) and sending a good chunk of it to his speaking engagement agent, his cronies that run a con-artist filled charity,  and using it to pay for his private jets and fancy travel and accommodations for himself and friends.  That was a scam which he continues . . . and continues to lie and obfuscate about.  But he’s not the President, just a scam artist with a giant audience on FOX News and ABC radio.

U.S. Army Sgt. Chris Moore @ the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Now, though, the President,  Barack Obama, is flat-out telling America he doesn’t care about our fallen troops.  He’s skipping the traditional Memorial Day laying of the wreath ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.  Hey, at least he’s honest.  More honest than when he faked his Selective Service Registration, years after the fact, a story I broke on this site over a year and a half ago.  So, I guess it’s kind of fitting that a guy who scammed his way out of registering for the draft, is blatantly F-U-ing his way out of honoring America’s fallen.

With the long Memorial Day weekend on the horizon, President Obama is finally addressing one of the great broken promises of his administration: his early pledge to return home to Chicago every six weeks or so.

In 16 months at the White House, the Obamas have been back home just once – in February of 2009. But they plan to make the trip over Memorial Day weekend, an official said. After arriving on Thursday night, they will visit with friends and participate in private events.

On Monday, Obama will make remarks at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, south of Chicago – missing the usual tradition of presidents speaking at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.

Since when are promises to a city of political thugs more important than honoring those who fought and died for America? Since Barack Obama became President. That’s when.

Unconscionable.  Truly a travesty.  But not surprising, given that it’s this guy.  What an embarrassment for a President.  Not that you didn’t already know that.

BTW, how long until Sean Hannity, who is still scamming off soldiers’ dead bodies, starts harping on this when he still hasn’t come clean about his own dissing of our fallen? 3-2-1 . . . (Michelle Fraudkin, who blindly defended Hannity’s scamming of America’s fallen is already on the case. Hypocrisy on the right is as bad as hypocrisy on the left. A damn shame. And plenty of shameless damned.)

I have to agree with Mr. Mallarnee. He doesn’t deserve to be on that sacred piece of earth. As a proud American of Scottish ancestry as well I think that the Scottish proverb “A false friend is more dangerous than a bitter enemy” applies to this situation.

MarySJ on May 26, 2010 at 8:20 am

Amadeo…please note. We, the citizens of the United States WERE NOT GIVEN RIGHTS. We are born with unalienable rights. Government does not have the authority to negate those rights – read The Bill of Rights / Constitution. For a contrast, research the Canadian government Bill of Rights, their Speech restrictions, etc. Keep in mind that we are a Constitutionally Limited Republic, not a Democracy. Why? If we were a democracy, then majority rule, even if morally wrong, i.e. slavery, could be voted in if supported by a majority of voters. As for the POTUS, well, things can change away from his preferred direction in the blink of an eye in the upcoming election. Vote as if your life were on the line, for in truth, it really is on the line. Bye-Bye BHO.

Dennis / Tampa on May 26, 2010 at 9:41 am

Please understand that you MUST find a viable and worthy opponent to run against this guy and the field looks pretty slim right now. If you don’t you will again have people voting for the lesser of 2 evils and maybe not at all because they see it’s pointless. It’s not too soon to start looking for good solid Republican candidates, maybe even ones without Beltway experience because what has any of the current crop done that makes them deserving of the presidency? As soon as the Nov. election is over, assuming it takes place, the 2012 juggernaut will start up and that’s too late to tell the RNC who the people want to run for them. Start looking NOW for good unknowns and get them KNOWN!!! It’s your only hope.

    mk750 on May 26, 2010 at 10:36 am

    Right on Dennis!
In a Democracy, 51% of the people, can vote to violate the rights of the other 49%. i.e. Mob rules…”If you listen to fools, the Mob rules”…R.J. Dio

In a Republic…”one with the law is a Majority”…Calvin Coolidge.
i.e. ONLY God can take away your rights because your rights come from God, and NOT the “state” or “government”…

Who cares? on May 26, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Did the “voters” NOT elect the POTUS by a majority vote?
Then what good does your vote do after we had an election in which people voted for “change”, and got it? i.e. a change from freedom, into slaves of the cradle to coffin Government Nanny…Nanny McPhee!
The Mob rules in America because it’s NO longer resembles a Republic with unalienable rights, it’s become a Democracy in which “Majority rules” and nobody has any unalienable rights, just “privileges that can be taken away at a whim by the “state”.

I don’t agree on Sean Hannity comments, that is despicable to say when all he is doing is raising funds for the troops. Get your facts straights.

Pnatbutter on May 26, 2010 at 10:36 am

He can’t go. It would be like pouring Holy water on a vampire, he would vaporize in an instant if he stepped foot among the honorable men buried there.

Zippy on May 26, 2010 at 11:05 am

So it is ok for Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W Bush to all hand that duty off to someone else on Memorial Day, but when Obama does it, it is somehow wrong? Reagan missed it in 1983 and had the defense secretary do it instead, Bush Sr. did it in 1992 and had draft dodger Dan Qualye do it, and George W did it in 2007. He has Cheney do it while he was vacationing in Texas! So how exactly does that make Obama unloyal toward our Armed Services, and yet all 3 of those Republicans are praised for their support of the troops! Both Bushes got us into unjust wars and have gotten many of our bright, young men with great potential killed in the prime of their lives! That is so much more disloyal than anything Obama has done.

James on May 26, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Here is arlington cemetery picture of memorial day 2007.

think of it this way, you are in the middle of the heat and deseret in a war and all you want to do is go home and see your families, and that is what your president is going to do

regan and bush 41st did not skip it in a time of war

david on May 26, 2010 at 3:09 pm

James, you are just like so many of the other wackadoodles that put unsubstaniated bs on the site. Get your info right before trying to lead any one else down the same shit hole you live in. For the record, the only time George W. Bush missed the wreath ceremony at Arlington was while he was in Normandy doing what?, oh, remembering the fallen from DDay. dumbass

Steven on May 26, 2010 at 7:43 pm

I’m not an American so I wouldn’t know what the difference is between the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and the Arlington National Cemetery. However, assuming both are National Military Cemeteries then I, for one, don’t see the issue here.

In fact, if that’s the case (both cemeteries being National Military cemeteries) I would say that Debby isn’t just raising a tempest in a teacup here but that she’s (for once) actually wrong (hey, nobody is perfect).

In fact, I believe that the US Presidents SHOULD, at least occasionally, attend other National Military Cemeteries then Arlington. Are the soldiers lying in those any lesser deserving of respect just because they were interred outside of the Washington DC zone?

Of course not! Hence, IMHO, it’s entirely fitting for the president to occasionally attend memorial services in those other National Military Cemeteries. If it happens that such an alternate National Military Cemetery happens to be in the President’s “home state” then what off it?

Eliezer on May 26, 2010 at 12:08 pm

You said it in your first sentence, “I am not an American”, then shut your frigging pie hole dumbass. You havent served this country in any fashion, so take your leechass back to whence you came.

Steven on May 26, 2010 at 7:47 pm

Come on Deb, you know damn well that he isn’t the first President to do this. Once again, the entire premise of your “story” is flawed. Go back to Journalism 101, please.

alex on May 26, 2010 at 12:25 pm

An aside about Hannity:after Debbie reported on his financial shenanigans, I got a letter from Hannity (I wasn’t on his mailing list, but…) where he was fronting for the Heritage Foundation.
It seemed to me that he was “wrapping himself in the flag”, attempting to quell criticisms by showing what a great Conservative American he was.
“See? I’m one of you! Even the Heritage Foundation asks me for help!”
Did they ask or did he beg them to help him with his tarnished image?

As for President Obama-other Presidents may have bypassed the Memorial Day event, but I never doubted their patriotism or their love for this country.
I DO doubt Obama on both counts, and every move he makes is suspect because he has lied constantly, and done as much damage to this country as he could in the short time he has been around.
But we will survive Obama-to quote from one of my favorites:
“I have seen a wicked, violent man
Spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil.
Then he passed away, and lo, he was no more;
I sought for him, but he could not be found.”

Douglas Q on May 26, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Clinton statred this, being a Baby Boomer and all,so Boybama is simply carrying on the leftist attitude started by the likes of Clinton.

Phineas on May 26, 2010 at 2:05 pm

You’re a hack Debbie. Perhaps you’re too young to remember George H.W. Bush skipping out on Arlington for the campaign trail? Reagan also missed the ceremony at Arlington, although for an important economic summit.

Dana on May 26, 2010 at 2:29 pm

Both Bush’s and Regan missed more than once. Why are Republicans so negative all the time?

Sylvia on May 26, 2010 at 3:16 pm

All of them Liberal.

Sylvia on May 26, 2010 at 3:34 pm

How come when Regan missed it in 83 or when Bush missed it due to scheduled speaking engagements there was no outrage? Why is this not noted and why do conservatives continue to spread such hate and diseption while touting to be christians? I dont get it…

Ezekiel Bianchi M.D. on May 26, 2010 at 6:48 pm

Hey Zeke, get a clue…We are at war today, we were not back then.

Who cares? on May 26, 2010 at 7:43 pm

Reagan was actually DOING something: participating at an economic summit. Working, not hanging out in Chicago.

I don’t support H.W. Bush. W. Bush did a good job of showing up at Arlington, since he actually cared about our soldiers, something Obama does not.

Your Worst Nightmare on July 20, 2010 at 1:45 am

Nurse Ratchet on May 26, 2010 at 7:44 pm

We weren’t at war in 2002 AND 2007 when GW sent SIX time draft dodger Cheney to the Tomb? Bush was in Normandy when he missed it in 2002, but he was AT HOME IN TEXAS in 2007! You are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites!

SickofIdiots on May 26, 2010 at 8:08 pm

USS Ronald Regan:

USS George HW Bush:

they walked the walk over a life time of public service.

president soetoro, not honoring at Arlington rather at Abe Lincoln Cemetary is in my view, a crafty way of subliminaly reminding us of Americans died fighting to free the slaves.

he will be seen to be wrapping himself in the flag, but underneatn he will be protected by, and subtly playing the race card like Paul McCartney plays The Rex.

his detractors can reem him, his defenders can argue his honor.

whatever his motivation and intentions, in the end, in a time of war with many of our finest in harms way, in an election year, in a period where he is already suspect and doubted by so many, i think its some bad decision making. i think it leaves the nation more polorized and stressed over the weekend rather than calm and comforted and honoring and praying for our country and soldiers. its not the kind of leadership i want in a president.

F-22 on May 26, 2010 at 8:14 pm

George Bush did the SAME things in 1992 …. JACKASS !!!!!

Carlos on May 26, 2010 at 8:56 pm

Steven, aren’t non Americans allowed an opinion and the right to express it?!… For what it’s worth, I’m a staunch supporter of the US. And, if I were American I’d be a Republican rather then a Democrat.

As for not having served in the US military, sorry, but I was busy serving in the IDF. You may have heard of that outfit.

I (much) more often agree with Debbie then I disagree with her. I’m sure she’d respect my opinion and disrespect your foul mouth.

Also, do keep in mind (if you have one which I doubt) that not all non-Americans are anti-American.

Eliezer on May 26, 2010 at 10:30 pm

By the way, I employ several Americans and use the services of several US service providers. Plus, my US company pays taxes in the US. So, you can stuff your not having served the US in any fashion and leechass comments where the sun don’t shine.

As for going back to were I come from, whatever gave you the idea that I wasn’t there to begin with. I guess you don’t realize that this interlattice thing is available in other countries… But then again, considering your limited intelligence as evidenced by your foul mouth and foolishness, that’s not surprising.

Eliezer on May 26, 2010 at 10:36 pm

Is the US screwed up or what?

F.D.R. in Hell on May 26, 2010 at 11:16 pm

eliezer, looks to me like you may have been a victim of a knee-jerk friendly fire incedent.

F-22 on May 27, 2010 at 12:17 am

To F.D.R. in Hell: like everywhere else, SOME people in the US are fucked up. But, if you want some examples of really fucked up locations I’d say that you could do worse then look at North Korea, Iran, Somalia, Zimbabwe and a lot of other places that are orders of magnitude worse then the US.

There’s a reason millions of people try to enter the US (legally or otherwise)…

Eliezer on May 27, 2010 at 8:33 am

To F-22: I may indeed be the victim of a knee-jerk friendly fire incident but I wouldn’t call a person that foulmouthed and simple minded a friend of mine. Not even by a country mile.

His post was totally out of place. Even if I had been a lefty European or whatever. I’m sure that Debbie herself would support the notion that everybody has a right to express their opinion in a polite and reasoned form. Even if that opinion doesn’t agree with her opinion.

There certainly was no cause for the foul language that “friend” used.

Eliezer on May 27, 2010 at 8:37 am

In any case, that “friend” was not only totally inappropriate he was totally wrong:

* I’m not a lefty (but I am, like most rightists a true liberal).
* I have served in the military and would have a Purple Hart equivalent except that the IDF doesn’t award decorations for getting wounded in combat.
* I contribute to the US economy more then many Americans.

But, all of that is irrelevant. I would have had the right to hold and express my opinion even if none of the above was true. Any real liberal (lefty or righty) would never have tried to shout me down just because my opinion conflicted with theirs.

I’m sure I’m not saying anything you didn’t already know when I point out that small narrow minded people exist in all forms and shapes, Republican as well as Democrat, pro as well as anti American, pro as well as anti Israel and whatever else you’d care to mention.

Eliezer on May 27, 2010 at 8:53 am

I’m with you Eliezer, not only did you express a respectful opinion, you asked a question so as to be informed. It was not a challenge to anyone. Just ignore the idiots and foul mouths. They’re not worth the effort. I’m a woman of a certain age who grew up in the US so I didn’t “serve” my country either in the manner your “friend” is speaking of, namely the military. I guess the US is supposed to go back in time and take the vote away from women. Maybe “Steven” would like to live in a moslem country where women are chattel. That way only half the population is a threat to his “superiority.”

    mk750 on May 27, 2010 at 9:08 am

Reagan skipped this cermony on at least one occassion. Oh. Maybe he was at the Nazi graves laying that wreath. Remember that one ?

Oh. I also believe one of the “Bushies” opted out on a Memorial Day.

As that idiot Imus also stated more then once today. He could not remember a Presidnet skipping this Memorial Day tribute in recent memory.

Hmmmm. I guess the 1980’s on do not count as recent memory to Imus or all the other “well-informed” patriots posting on this site.

Michael on May 27, 2010 at 9:36 am

uv views are welcom and respected. the thing about arlington v. abe linc cemetary to my view goes to the percieved posture of obam on america, (and i might add israel for that matter)…

to stretch that notion if i might for a moment. take the news that rham emanul did not go to kotel but only his son did for his barmitzva. is this a bigger statement of rahm and concurrently o bam on israel and jersalem? many of us think yes and therefore sharply disagree…

F-22 on May 27, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Curious as to why no one has addressed not only the fact that both Bush’s and Reagan also missed the ceremonies. But in the case of Reagan and Bush II, I guess the VP, SecDef, and every other cabinet official was out of town because they sent the ASSISTANT Secretary of Defense to represent the administration. Thayer under Reagan, and then Wolfowitz on “get this” the 2002 Memorial Day, the first one post 9-11. Where was the outrage. Where was the anger. Your silence speaks volumes and your faux indignation even more so.

P-51 on May 27, 2010 at 6:33 pm

You’re an idiot. Many people addressed this very point. Now slink away.

skzion on May 27, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Sorry Skzion, no one addressed why there was not even a Cabinet Level Secretary sent. I mean I understand the President was gone, but the entire Cabinet and the VP. Pretty strange, perhaps you can then explain to me why the first Memorial Day Ceremony following 9-11 did not even warrant a Cabinet level official, and all that was sent was a ASSITANT Sec Def. If you have no answer, I would suggest the slink path you opened is still available, and I think just your size.

P-51 on May 27, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Not the old redirect argument again. They have already beat that one like a rented mule…I wonder what sermon they will be hearing at the Trinity Church on 95th street this Memorial weekend?

Steven Hauptman on May 28, 2010 at 3:15 am

The usurper needs to go! And I mean back to Kenya. He and his idiot, arrogant wife must lay awake at night laughing at the stupidity of the American voter. I’m sure they cannot believe that he is actually the president of the greatest nation on earth. Who’d have thought that such an anti-American radical, no-nothing, community organizer(sh*t-stirrer) would be in the position he’s in. Our nation had better wake up. I personally do not think we can survive much longer. An entire generation has been so dumbed-down and has no idea of how precious our Constitution is and what the meaning of freedom is. Teach your kids and grandkids the truth. They will not get it in the public schools and if America is to survive, we must fight against the overwhelming “Americans” who hate America. We are a wonderful and unique nation and must instill pride in our future generations. Thank you and G-D bless our military and vets.
