She’s No Palin: Michelle Obama Now Lying About Gazillion Dollar Custom-Made Designer Wardrobe; Claims She Shops @ J. Crew, Online

By Debbie Schlussel
Since Michelle Hussein Obama is now lying about her gazillion-dollar, custom-made designer wardrobe in order to play class warfare against Sarah Palin, she needs to be called to the mat.
For the last six months or so, we’ve been treated to stories and pictures of Michelle Obama’s designer wardrobe and details of how much of her stunning wardrobe is custom-made by an expensive Chicag-based designer. Then, we were treated to spreads of Michelle Hussein Obama’s exorbitant designer label wardrobe, bearing names you only see on celebrities and wives of millionaires. There’s a reason that Michelle Obama made People’s Best Dressed List, and Vanity Fair’s.
But, now, with the flap over the $150,000 the RNC spent on a wardrobe for Sarah Palin, Michelle Obama is lying and pretending she buys her clothes online and from J. Crew.

US Magazine Spread: Michelle Obama’s Expensive Designer Duds

Couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Here’s what she’s now telling Jay Leno:

No $150,000 wardrobe malfunctions for Michelle Obama.
“Actually, this is a J. Crew ensemble,” the wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama told Jay Leno in an appearance on his show Monday.
“You can get some good stuff online,” she added.

That’s a lie. Obama’s wardrobe–which probably exceeds $150,000–is well known to be that of high-priced, exclusive designers. Endless profiles have been written about her custom-made tailored frocks from personal designer Maria Pinto. And then there are her gazillion-dollar outfits from Moschino, Narciso Rodriguez, and Azzedine Alaia.
The Wall Street Journal did a huge profile of Pinto and her personalized pieces for Mrs. Obama, to the tune of thousands of dollars. The New York Times wrote about the Pinto-Obama style relationship, too. In September, US Magazine did a two-page spread of Mrs. Obama’s fancy designer duds. The ugly brooch she wore on her teal dress at the Democratic National Convention cost well over $200 alone.
Mrs. Hussein Obama also told Jay Leno that, while she won’t criticize Sarah Palin for the expensive clothes (which she didn’t mention was the McCain campaign’s decision, not Palin’s), she said, “When we buy clothes, we buy it ourselves.” Well, sure, that’s because, while the Palins had to pay for their own home, the Obamas had their $1.6 million-plus home purchased for them in a sleazy land deal by Tony Rezko, who enabled them to buy only the home at a well-below list (and market) price. So, they have a lot of extra cash on hand for designer duds.
And the Obamas are rich, unlike the Palins. Obama’s books sold many copies and Mrs. Obama was making well over $300,000 annually as a crush-the-poor-on-healthcare hospital exec. It’s not like the Palins can afford Mrs. Hussein Obama’s wardrobe. Obama, himself, shops at exclusive Dubai-owned Barney’s, where men’s suits are several thousand dollars apiece.
The Palins are relatively modest people. I really wish the McCain campaign and RNC hadn’t done the whole clothing deal. It really took away a real chance at contrasting these two families and how they live their lives. And it is turning into a never-ending story right before the election.
Either way, Michelle Obama–especially on the issue of expensive clothes–is a phony. She’s no average Josephine who shops at J. Crew. She’s a rich elitist with high-priced personal couturiers that would make Sarah Palin–and most Americans–blush.
But for the next week, she’s suddenly one of “the little people.”

The reality is the only reason it came up was because Palin is the VP not McCain’s wife, Cindy. All I can say is I hope McCain wins and doesn’t die in office. I can live with Palin’s inexperience but what concerns me though is her holier then thou atitude (and this negative views towards men and seemingly taken adcandage of the fact that while her son is in Iraq to have all this girl time with her 3 daughter including women leadership conferences all at taxpayers expense) and that does concern me.

i love how GAZILLION DOLLAR wardrobes suddenly turn into $200 brooches

lolwut on October 28, 2008 at 1:37 am

I saw a fashion maven, ok, she was my daughter, dissected all of Michelle’s clothing, and concluded the wardrobe was worth $100,000’s. But we don’t know who bought it do we? What we do know is that she would not spend a dime of her own money. She is still griping about her student loan. Like white people don’t have loans.

Obviously you care or you wouldn’t be reading what Debbie writes!
To NB:
Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. The Investor’s Business Daily poll has the race just about tied, and they were the only poll to get the 2004 race correct (no one else even came close). That having been said, I don’t believe any of the polls. There is no way the number of “undecideds” is not much larger than being reported, and everyone on all sides agrees that the overwhelming number of people to make up their minds at the last minute will vote for McCain.

I_am_me on October 28, 2008 at 8:52 am

Why are you so certain that Michelle was “lying” when she said that her “Leno” outfit was from J. Crew? After all, in this internet age it should be quite easy to verify not only the catalog number of the three pieces but the exact dollar cost of each one. Please check out the J. Crew web site; another of Michelle’s campaign outfits (the gray floral skirt, cardigan sweater and shell) is featured there; the skirt costs $49.99!
Also, when a woman marries and chooses not to retain her maiden name, her new name adds just her husband’s last name. Thus, Michelle Obama’s full name is Michelle Robinson Obama; it is not Michelle Hussein Obama. According to social etiquette (again, available online if you don’t know it), the only proper use of “Hussein” in her name would be if she is addressed formally: Mrs. Barack Hussein Obama. She would not be Mrs. Michelle Obama unless she were divorced & she would never be Mrs. Michelle Hussein Obama.

moxiejan on October 28, 2008 at 9:08 am

This example is illustrative of the disparate treatment the candidates wives have received. Michelle Obama is lying if she is implying she just gets clothes from J Crew, but don’t expect her to be called on it. Remember that hit piece on Cindy McCain about a week ago by the New York Times, compare that piece to their new profile of Michelle Obama. This bias during this campaign has been shocking and frankly disgusting.

Nancy Swider on October 28, 2008 at 9:35 am

I do not care how much she spends on her clothes it is still impossible to cover up the huge ass of hers no matter how much it costs.
I bet they had to call several plumbers to reinforce the plumbing with an ass that big.
So she can dream on with her room service at the Waldorf Astoria. I mean come on, 2 steameed lobsters and cavier for about 500 bucks. With meals like that her ass will continue to grow. I guess the bottle of Bollinger will help her forget how big it actually is.

ScottyDog on October 28, 2008 at 9:36 am

DS is right, MO is as phony as BO. I did not know J Crew sold tents on their website. Volunteer to get the vote out. After serveral hours on phone calling, voters I spoke with do not reflect what the polls are showing. Seems that is not only locally but seen in many areas. This “spread the wealth” and his dippy VP are his downfall. It is not stopping.

Who cares how much or how little Michelle pays? She and Barack made $4 million last year. She really could spend a little more and look a little better. Those print dresses are gruesome. But whatever. It’s not like she takes the money she doesn’t spend on clothes and gives it to charity or poor relatives in her family…….
Obama spent $4.5 million out of the $14 million they spent at Invesco on his styrofoam columns, all for a 1/2 hour speech, and people are criticizing Sarah for $150,000 in borrowed clothes? It’s not taxpayer money, people-

claire on October 28, 2008 at 10:38 am

$4.5 million on faux greek columns. Fitting, sense he’s going to declare himself the new Ceasar. All Hail Ceasar! or is that Hial Ceasar! As far as MO is concerned, you can put a $100,000 dress on the racist, uniform hating men and women protecting her fat ass, America hating wench, but in the end she’s still just a pig.

Aunt Esther is calling and she wants her wardrobe back.

californiascreaming on October 28, 2008 at 12:26 pm

Bravo Debbie ! For months, Media was comparing Mrs. Obama to Jackie Onassis, and Mrs. Obama wasn’t disavowing it.
It was only with the whole caviar, lobster, and arugula flap….. that Mrs. Obama went on The View in a $100.00 dress, to prove that they really aren’t as elitist as was reported.

Maxine Weiss on October 28, 2008 at 1:12 pm

Look at the pictures of Michelle Obama posted with Debbie’s story. If anyone considers Michelle Obama’s ass “big” or says she’s “fat”, then I guess they have been assimilated into the fashion industry’s norm that only thin, waif-like women look good. And we know the type of “men” who control the fashion industry. Because of their propaganda, to have curves or an actual womanly shape is considered fat nowadays. I’ve seen fat…Michelle Obama ain’t it!
But I am glad to see that we’ve reached a point in American history where some Black folks can be called “rich elitists”. I one day want to work to the point where I can be called a “rich elitist” too! And yes, the Obama’s have money, but they have not always had money. Neither was born into it nor married into it. Their opportunities for wealth came through their taking advantage of the educational opportunities that were presented to them (believe it or not, there does seem to be some connection between an Ivy League education and wealth attainment….go figure!). But because of this “class warfare” thing we have going on in America, political candidates (and their spouses) somehow feel the need to downplay their education and status and appear to be “regular folks”. I’m sorry, but no one running for President is a “regular person”, nor should we want them to be. Whether it’s McCain and Palin or Obama and Biden in the White House next year, it’s going to take truly extraordinary people to deal with all of the challenges this nation faces.
By the way ScottyDog, the story of Michelle Obama ordering caviar and lobster at the Waldorf Astoria (or even being there) was a hoax and the New York Post had to print a retraction of the story. I’m still waiting for Rush Limbaugh’s retraction since he blabbed it all over his show and on his Website. But what if it was true…so what? You only live once, so if you have the means and are tired of eating just beans, enjoy yourself!

JibberJabber on October 28, 2008 at 1:26 pm

You can put a $10,000 dress on Chewbacca Obama and she is still just a condescending, left wing low life.

Southernops on October 28, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Amazing article, Debbie. You are nothing if not brutally honest! I don’t care how much these two gals spend on their clothes or where they buy them, but it is ludicrous for the ObaMessiah’s wife to pretend to be a frugal online clothes shopper after viewing all the photographic evidence you presented.

gunjam on October 28, 2008 at 2:43 pm

One huge difference between the two; Palin, for all her shortcomings is more about substance; she didn’t bring up the issue of clothes — it was done by others. She was content to talk about substance, and just describe her life truthfully. Someone like MHO has to deal with form, rather than substance, because the substance is so much against the values of this country that no one would vote for BHO. Thus, the emphasis on ‘down-to-earth- clothes, and other superficial issues, anything to detract from substance.

The Soretoro’s have not earned squat. They both are affirmative action graduates from their respective institutions. They did not earn their way in, they were given a pass on poor grades to attend the ivy league schools based on their skin color.
She would have received an “F” at the University I attended for that poor excuse of a senior thesis that she wrote on “The Racist Divide” at Princeton.
Maybe thats why neither one of them will release their transcripts.
They both have worked only in the public sector or have been given political appointments. In other words, they live off the taxpayer dime.
If you think Michelle Soretoro’s ass is small you need to see an optometrist ASAP. I hope you are not driving because the object at her rear is much larger than it appears, without having to look through the side view mirror.
Why do you think she is wearing tents lately?
BTW I still say they had to hire plumbers to reinforce the fixtures after they received the illegal loan form Tony Rezo.

ScottyDog on October 28, 2008 at 3:26 pm

So let me get this straight.
1. Global capitalism is collapsing.
2. We are in a recession, we may be entering a depression.
3. We have lost the war in iraq, and may be losing the war in Afghanistan.
4. Global warming is causing the Arctic to disappear and the gulf-stream to switch off.
5. Skinheads are planning to execute 88 school children.
6. Houses are being re-possessed at record levels all across the Western world.
And what are you people frothing at the mouth over?
Where Michelle Obama buys her clothes!! Sweet Jesus you couldn’t make it up.
What planet are you people on?
Can’t you see how irrelevant you people are making yourselves?
I come here for a debate because I’m bored agreeing with people on Left-wing websites, but jeepers people, it’s difficult to have reasoned debate with people who are so divorced from reality.

I’m surprised Michelle was able to find anything at JCrew to fit her what with her steatopygia and all. JCrew is made for slim co-ed types, not Amazons.
We were told by a gushing media that she loves Jimmy Choo shoes which go for $600-700 a pop.

lexi on October 28, 2008 at 5:34 pm

If you were to examines the grades of men who have been President of the United States (including some of our best), you shouldn?t be surprised to find out that some of our best presidents weren’t exactly Rhodes Scholars. But how in the hell do you make Harvard Law Review, then President of Harvard Law Review, with poor grades??? And since you are so adamant about the poor scholarship of Obama and his wife, I’m sure you hold Sen. McCain and his wife to the same standard. Have you ever ask what Sen. McCain’s grades were at the Naval Academy? Did he get “preferential treatment” in the admission’s process because his father was a high-ranking naval officer? Have you ever questioned the validity of Cindy McCain’s high school transcript and now she got into college? Have you ever accused Sen. McCain of being on the “taxpayer dime” because he has never held a private industry job? And have you ever accused Cindy McCain of helping her husband get political influence and power, because she came from a wealthy and influential family in Arizona? Since their skin is not dark, I doubt it. And if people get a break or two in life for whatever reason, then more power to them. I’m not upset with either the Obamas or the McCains for taking advantage of whatever opportunities were offered to them as a result of their station in life.
As far as Michelle’s ass (I still can’t believe we’re talking about this), if you like the stick figure physiques perpetrated by the entertainment industry, that’s your own preference. I never said Michelle’s behind was small….I am just a little distressed by what we’re starting to call “big” and “fat” in these times. Hollywood and the fashion industry have really done a number on how we view the feminine physique. Marilyn Monroe and other popular actresses from the past would probably be considered fat if they were in Hollywood today. But was far as Michelle, I’ll take a 40-something year old woman with a physique like hers any day of the week, tent dresses and all…!!!

No Pasaran is that all? First of all most conservatives are not gung ho about McCain. COBRA-MA is your wet dream. This what you have been waiting your whole lives for. We want McCain to be the Goalkeeper for the next 4 or 8 years against liberal legislation. Most conservatives would have Romney, Huckabee or Duncan Hunter.
Global capitalism may be collapsing. But that may not be a bad thing. We dont need the free trade Clinton passed in NAFTA and MFN with China. Lets get out of the WTO and be more protectionist and put America First with jobs. LOU DOBBS FOR LABOR SECRETARY. However COBRA-MA’s plan is un-American. He will give amnesty to 20 million illegals. Insourcing cheap labor while continuing outsourcing. Once word gets out around the globe it will be bodies falling over bodies to get in. No protection at border and more terrorists and drugs into the nation. At least with McCain we have a fighting chance.
As for recession, lets flush the turds out of the system. Self-determined people will get by, but losers want COBRA-MA. Too many people bought homes they couldnt afford. Yeah lets bail out the guy who refinanced his home so he could get a new car. Screw them. Heard of a NINJA loan. NO verifiable income, no job, no assets, but still get a home loan.
I trust McCain with our troops over COBRA-MA. Enough said.
Global warming. You losers have no right to complain. Lets build 100 nuclear power plants now and we dont have to worry about your stupid carbon dioxide concerns. You fool, when was the last time someone died of nuclear waste anywhere in the industrial world. And drill offshore, to get price of oil down for good. Streamline in electric, hybrid cars as market allows. Use clean coal until we get nuke plants online. That isnt reasonable to liberals. And global warming is a hoax.
He is the COBRA because he sat in those pews with Jeremiah Wright. His church was asking for reperation through COBRA (Coalition of Black for Reperations in America).

californiascreaming, yours is almost the architypal christian-right diatribe anno 2008.
A mixture of hysteria, paranoia and straw-man arguments.
“Lets build 100 nuclear power plants now and we dont have to worry about your stupid carbon dioxide concerns. ”
Classic Straw-man argument. 80% of the electrical power generated here is produced by nuclear power. I don’t have a problem with that.
“You fool, when was the last time someone died of nuclear waste anywhere in the industrial world.”
20% of all cancer deaths in the Netherlands and Belgium during the 1970’s and ’80’s are believed to have been caused by the Windscale fire of 1957.
There are no reliable figures for deaths from this accident in the UK. The British government’s assessment is that just 100 people died, though most experts put the figure much higher.

Well, I guess this post is interesting to some of your readers, and it does illustrate, once again, how the Obama campaign obfuscates the truth in almost everything they do and say. However I never thought it was much of a story when the Obama Campaign made an issue of the RNC outlay for Sarah’s clothing. So What?
On a side note, as a new poster, I find it interesting that a number of Lib….oops, Progressives read your posts and reply. Sooner or later, by reading and absorbing enough Conservative material, we can hope they might be saved from the jaws of Liberal….oops, Progressive detritus.

John Mc Cain released his transcripts and he got lousy grades something like graduated at the second from the bottom of his class.
I am not voting for John McCain so why are you giving me a lecture on McCain? I already voted for Chuck Baldwin absentee ballot.
Obama aka Barry Soretoro has not released his birth certificate. That is important because his own grandmother says he was born in Kenya making him a non citizen.
He has not released his transcripts.
He has not released his medical records.
He refuses to release his legislative schedule when he was in the legislature.
In short what is he hiding?
He has admitted to snorting cocaine for years which would dis-qualify anyone else to even get a security clearance.
Obama is not fit to sweep the floors at city hall let alone take the oath for President.

ScottyDog on October 29, 2008 at 11:12 am

MO couldn’t manage a local school, let alone being a first bit–I mean lady of the white house. And not all blacks like myself wanna see her as the first lady.
Meanwhile ‘Yes!’ Pasaran is making a joke of himself. Stop it man, the marajuana is getting to you big time. The moment you say something about global warming, is when I can’t take you seroiusly.
And Jib, I dare you say to me that your “ashamed” of me for not supporting Obama. I don’t care what skin color the person is. If I don’t like what they stand for, I will not support them! I think for myself, not for BET. I’m a Black American who waves the american flag. I’m only one of a small number of young black americans. And the last thing I wanna see is that Kaorinite called Michelle Obama being refered to as a First Lady.

Squirrel3D on October 29, 2008 at 11:26 am

You win that dare because there is no way I’m going to tell another grown man that he should be “ashamed” at not voting for the candidate I prefer. No Black person should be or is obligated to support Sen. Obama and no one is obligated to think like I think (thank God!). As much as you and I disagree politically, we both do agree with the notion that all Blacks should NOT be placed in one placed in one categorical box, which tends to happen every time a negative news story involving someone Black comes out. And no one should assume that because someone is Black, that they are voting for Obama, that they’re an affirmative action hire, that they’re some kind of Black nationalist, that they attend a Jeremiah Wright kind of church, that they don’t love this country…..the list could go on and on!
Interestingly enough, I went to a business conference last month in DC where I met several very financially successful Black folks who told me something very interesting. These folks very publicly support Obama but confided to me that they were going to vote for McCain in the privacy of the voting both (people tend to confide stuff when they get a little bit of alcohol in them!). When I ask then why they would vote for McCain, they all basically told me the same thing, “Man, I love Barack and Michelle to death and I’m glad to see a brother up there on the ticket, but hey, I gotta protect my money!”. Even my own mother, a woman who grew up in the Jim Crow south where she was not even allowed to vote, can’t bring herself to fully support Obama….she was a big Hillary supporter and is still carrying some grudges! So I don’t think Black support for Obama is as universal as it appears on the surface…..
A Kaorinite? Don’t be so hard on my girl Michelle! Now, I have no idea what a “Kaorinite” is, but I’m sure it ain’t nuthin’ nice!

JibberJabber on October 29, 2008 at 12:13 pm

I didn’t mean to lecture….I just think that sometimes an unfair standard is applied to educated Black folks under the false assumption that America and the American college admissions system was some kind of utopian meritocracy before affirmative action came along. Just as I think an unfair “Hollywood-Driven” standard is being applied to women when we call a tall woman with curves “big” or “fat”, as some commentators on this site have referred to Michelle Obama. And then we wonder why our daughters are developing eating disorders at younger and younger ages….
You voted for Chuck Baldwin? Well, at least you?re consistent…that dude is a STRICT Constitutionalist!

JibberJabber on October 29, 2008 at 12:39 pm

the difference is she already has class and she pays for her own clothing. When she becomes first lady of course most designers will donate the clothing.
It’s against Federal Election Law and it wasn’t the Obama campaign which made the official complaint but a consumer watch dog group in D.C, followed by a group of Republicans who were pissed their money was spent that way.

cooper on October 29, 2008 at 7:58 pm

I don’t understand what point you are trying to make by using her husbands middle name when you write Michelle Obama’s name?
It seems as if you are using the name Hussein as some sort of slur. Is this because it is typically a Muslim name? I’ve seen this use of the name Hussein before on other far right/anti Obama websites. There’s always an emphasis on the middle name as if it somehow implies something negative about Obama.
How do you think this feels to Muslim-Americans who happen to be conservative republicans? Who have fought and served in our military?
Who would probably be cheering your article until they see your over-emphasis and misuse of the name Hussein and the cheers come to a screeching halt in the face of anti-Muslim sentiment.
I can “get” your attempt to hold MO accountable, but in that same spirit of accountability, YOU need to own your racial slur.
