DebbieSchlussel.com TV Guide: MUST WATCH Tonight – “Night Will Fall”

By Debbie Schlussel

While Holocaust-deniers will persist (and most of them know the Holocaust happened, but they hate Jews so they deny it), tonight’s HBO film, “Night Will Fall” is heretofore unseen stark proof of what happened in Nazi Germany in the camps. Most of the footage, used at the Nuremberg Trials, was taken at Bergen Belsen, where my Holocaust-survivor maternal grandparents were inmates and were liberated by the British. Some other footage is from Auschwitz. It was edited and directed by the late great Alfred Hitchcock, but it’s sadly not fiction. The film–since redone/redirected and with modern-day narration included–which debuts at 9:00 p.m. Eastern tonight. Here’s a description of it by Wall Street Journal TV critic and editorial board member, Dorothy Rabinowitz:

In April 1945, British army units entered the large civilian camp in Germany about which they had been warned, by the German military itself. The inmates had typhus, which could spread if the prisoners escaped. British army units nonetheless entered the camp, and there British army camera crews recorded, in unflinching detail, all that they saw for two weeks. The result was the beginning enterprise of a film titled “German Concentration Camps Factual Survey.” Bergen-Belsen, in the heart of Germany, and not far from beautifully pastoral surroundings, was the dumping ground for what remained of the Jews after the Germans had tried to rid themselves of inmates of other camps as the Allies closed in, by killing as many as possible in the last days of the war. The British army photographers’ pictures of Bergen-Belsen—insistently focused on every detail of the heaps of dead, the details of faces, the angles of bodies, their numbers beyond comprehension, piled in ditches—remain, in their clarity, the starkest, most explicit of all the photographic evidence of the reality of the camps.

Films would be taken later, at other camps, including the Soviet-liberated Auschwitz, largest of the extermination and labor camps the Germans established in the east. All of it would be assembled for a film by Sidney Bernstein of the British Ministry of Information and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Still, despite the stellar talents and authority of its creators, the film would be stored, rather than seen. Though its footage would provide some of the most damning testimony presented at the Nuremberg war crimes trials.

It would be housed, from 1952 on, in the archives of the Imperial War Museums. Then four years ago the IWM undertook the enormous task of restoring and digitizing the documentary, along with the long-missing sixth reel. “Night Will Fall,” a new documentary about the historic film, leaves no question as to the reason it was withheld. Its commentators note that the British government then, whose policy was to bar any flow of European Jews to Palestine, was not eager to present a film that would create a great deal of sympathy for these survivors, as such a film surely would.

“Night Will Fall,” directed by André Singer and narrated by Helena Bonham Carter, draws heavily on interviews with British army photographers who first entered Bergen-Belsen and some of those they liberated. The first of the British troops entered, with loudspeakers blaring in several languages: “We are the British. Help is on the way. Stay—we will come to you.” Again and again they heard it—“We are the British.” One of the survivors, age 19 at the time, recalls how every soldier looked like a god. “It was not what we expected—to be still alive.” Sgt. Mike Lewis recalls his own despair at what he had seen in his two weeks at Belsen. “I thought, as time went by, that it would leave me, that I could forget. But it never does leave you.”

I do not have cable, but I’ll find a way to see this, maybe when it comes out on DVD. For those who do and who subscribe to HBO, please let us know your reaction to it.

As we approach Holocaust Remembrance Day (tomorrow), let’s never forget the souls who perished there, why they were targeted, and who liberated them. And ask why those liberators, today, make nice with the new Nazis of Islam (who were actually part of the old Nazi cabal and never left). The mass murder at Paris’ Super Cacher, the kosher supermarket, shows us that it never really ended, and we are all still in need of liberation . . . this time–as time and again over the centuries–from Islam.

Documentaries like this are important, but completely meaningless if we refuse to connect the dots of the past to those of today.

I used to ask my late grandfather, Isaac Engel, why he didn’t have a number tattooed on his arm, unlike some of our other relatives. He told me that by the time he was in Belsen (he’d been in and out of various camps, some of which he escaped from), they wanted to exterminate the Jews so quickly that they didn’t bother with the tattooed number formality.

Whom do we know that wishes the Jews (and Christians and everyone who doesn’t adhere to their Orthodox fundamentalism) total extermination?

Hint: they worship Mohammed.

That Was Then . . .

This Is Now . . .

Nazism was, at one time, both popular with the European elite and deemed unstoppable, like Islam is today.

Islam is a totalitarian philosophy masquerading as a religion, and should not have Constitutional protections.

Occam's Tool on January 26, 2015 at 4:28 pm

…deemed unstoppable, like Islam is today.

So, what is your point – that it can be defeated like Nazis?

islam has 1.5 billion (or whatever their number)members and their plague is spread to all points over the globe. Nazis were confined to only one nationality in one country.

    DS_ROCKS! on January 26, 2015 at 4:42 pm

The only thing we need, to exterminate the Muslims — regardless of their numbers — is the will to do it. I mean the unshakeable, unwavering, will to do it. We have the technology to do it with. We just don’t have the will. Not even close to it.

What is the story behind Holocaust Remembrance Day?

Until this moment, I’d never heard of it.

Why was the Twenty-Seventh (27) of January designated as Holocaust Remembrance Day?

In 1969, when I was a soldier in the United States Army stationed in Germany at Spangdahlem Air Force Base, I was Assistant Scoutmaster of a Boy Scout troop.

In addition to our summer camp at Bad Tolz, i.e., “Camp Edelweiss”, and our tour of the Deutches Museum in Munich, we were scheduled to visit Dachau Concentration Camp and Salzburg, Austria, but when our Scoutmaster was suddenly hospitalized for pneumonia, our trip was, of necessity, prematurely ended.

January 27 is the anniversary of when the Russian army liberated Auschwitz, which was the largest and one of the more infamous labor and death camps established by the Nazis.

    Thank you for your service!

Mike Canly used to pal around with Nazis until he became friends with the late Irv Rubin and he said that privately the Nazis he was around thought the holocaust was a great thing and they wish it would happen again. For public outside, consumption they pretend the holocaust never happened.

As an aside, I didn’t know the Libertarians had Holocaust denial issues of their own until recently. It is shocking!

You can watch Night Will Fall on YouTube.

DS ROCKS is right. There were only a few million Germans in 1 country – maybe a few more, if one wants to toss in Italy, Japan and other German allies like Finland, Bulgaria, and some other East European countries.

With Muzzies, you have 1.8 billion not just from Morocco to Brunei, but also millions in Western societies themselves. Stamping that out would take nothing short of plunging the entire world into an international civil war. I agree w/ Occam that Islam is a geopolitical supremacist cult, but since it’s been recognized as a religion since the 7th century – long before even PC attitudes existed, it’s somewhat impossible to redefine it as such. Even if Scientologists or Branch Davidians are/were far less venal than Muzzies.

Infidel on January 26, 2015 at 9:23 pm

You don’t need to kill 1.5 billion, or 1.8 billion, or whatever the stupid number is. Target and destroy the militant leaders of the jihadist movement — they do not exist in large numbers, and we know exactly where they are. When the rest of the Muslim sheeple witness what was done to them, they will shrink away from taking their place. But this must, of necessity, be utter decimation, for it to work, both logistically, and psychologically/emotionally. Anything short of that will not work. In effect, there must be left, where formerly there were jihadist generals and lesser leaders, a series of huge, smoldering craters. Cut off the head of the venomous snake, and the rest of the indeterminately-long body will die.

The way to start the rollback of Islam is to educate others regarding its exact details, its history, how it fought its battles, its diktats from its Quran, its examples by its perfect man and the Darwinianly self-perfected nature of its followers.

Regarding any big wars, there will be time for that soon enough. Right now people need to know why we need and intend to win. And what leaders and lawmakers we should be choosing.

Perhaps search for Gregory Davis Islam 101. Learn about Islam. Learn who it is that you are not.

Ultimately, Schlussel has the balls and brains to provide the bottom line.

Now, back to the topic of Islam itself…

In the words of Turkish PM Erdogan regarding the term “moderate Islam” to describe the AKP party – “These descriptions are very ugly, it is offensive and an insult to our religion. There is no moderate or immoderate Islam. Islam is Islam and that’s it.”

Like Nazis and Nazism which together with Islam, its followers and the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem who all worked together so diligently to murder our people, Islam itself along with its followers must be eradicated. Islam goes even further by canonizing in their Quran and their own religious works the command and examples to murder our people to the very last one.

Now, all the Germans did not need to be killed. But Nazism, its leaders and the symbolic vestiges promoting its presence were eradicated. Only places of horrors it created and the history of what it did are preserved as a reminder to humanity.

Through indoctrination of its children, it becomes intrinsic to the underlying nature of all followers of Islam. Very few (I count them on thumbs, say Ayaan Hirsi Ali or Wafa Sultan) are smart and lucky enough to escape this indoctrination alive. These courageous and intelligent people pay dearly by living under constant threat of death.

The destruction and takeover of our Jewish homeland would either simply be a byproduct of the murder of our people, or by gradual process, it would facilitate the same objective of our murder.

The destruction of Israel is just another way for the followers of Islam to murder our people. After the destruction our homeland, the murder of all the remainder of our people would then continue to the purpose of attempting to murder every last one of us.

To put it another way, the followers of Islam, Muslims, never cared about the land in the first place. They never did anything with it. Their primary objective has always been our murder. The byproduct of which would be the takeover of our homeland and the loss of our independence as a people.

Islam and its followers, al-Aksa and all mosques must be eradicated, same as the Nazis and Nazism.

Ours is not a cause of this conflict but rather a response to a conflict thrown upon us.

Yes, al-Aksa needs to be razed. Had our people known the nature of Islam in 1967 (after nearly 1400 years we still have not internalized the nature of Islam and its followers… shame on us), we would have exposed Islam for what it is, say by reading aloud the Qur’an, and started demolitions.

The solution for the moment is not a war of aggression against Islam but rather the education of our people and of western civilization regarding Islam.

Religions can be evil. People need to understand the exact details of Islam, its history to this day, its tactics, its strategies, and to grasp the Darwinianly perfected nature and makeup (with the intelligence of captured and bred blood of other peoples including our own) of its people. We need not to take for granted extrapolations of early unrelated biblical texts that predate by thousands of years where the people of Islam may have originated. We must not blindly accept as truths Muslim explanations for their origins. They simply are what they are, and have Darwinianly perfected themselves by systematically killing off any of their own people who become apostates or voice civilized and intelligent ideas.

The first step to dealing with Islam and its followers is to learn about it and then to educate others. And don’t take your education from the followers of Islam but rather from its critics. People will then step back in horror at the realization of what we have in our midst. Islam and its followers will then become marginalized, and that will be the beginning of the end for Islam and its followers.

The one thing I don’t understand is why Soviet Russia gets credit for liberating Auschwitz when Russia started WWII along with Nazi Germany as per their “Molotov-Ribbentrop” friendship pact.

Russia only helped Jews…..AFTER Germany turned on Russia in 1941. Before that Russia was helping Nazi Germany round up Jews.

People should see the movie the “Soviet Story”

This is from CNN, but it has a fair amount of information about numbers and locations of the extermination camps that I haven’t ever seen in one place before.

On this occasion, I do regret not having HBO. It does look like a very powerful documentary that can still speak to us.

I owe you an apology for what I wrote you last week. I made the mistake of thinking you someone else. I’m sorry

“While “Factual Survey” was shelved, the footage it drew from has been used in other films and television programs over the years. But “Night Will Fall” proves that the images never lose their capacity to shock. (The title is taken from a line of narration in the older film: “Unless the world learns the lesson these pictures teach, night will fall.”)

What the new film accomplishes, more than anything else, is to make you wish you could see the original. That’s possible, but not easy. Marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Tuesday, and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camps, “German Concentration Camps Factual Survey” is being screened at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles on Tuesday and the Holocaust Memorial Museum in San Antonio on Thursday. There are no announced plans to show it more widely, but perhaps “Night Will Fall” will change that.”

I just got done watching Night Will Fall. I’m confused about the original movie “Factual Survey”.

Why is it NOT available for viewing or for sale. Why is it possible but NOT easy to see.

Can you please tell me where I can purchase or see the complete documentary shot by Sidney Bernstein and Alfred Hitchcock.

Thank you for any information you can give me in regard to the Holocaust.

Regards, Gregory Rupcic

PS I also don’t understand why this important film was not shown on regular TV to reach everyone who can’t afford HBO. I had to go to my brother’s house to watch it as I do not subscribe to HBO.

Please see my other comments on this. Received my dvd of “Night Will Fall” from Amazon UK yesterday. It’s playable on my Apple computer. The questions you have about current availability probably have to do with licensing, copyrights and, of course, usage fees.

Received my copy of the “Night Will Fall” DVD from the UK Amazon yesterday. It’s playable on my Apple desktop, since the computer has a program to switch format from DVD region 1 NTSC ( USA) to PAL region 2 (Europe & misc.). I’m watching it now.
