The Hypocritical Summer of Ted Nugent

By Debbie Schlussel

Am I the only one who’s sick and tired of the hypocritical ventings and lecturings of Ted Nugent? Am I the only one who sees through this rocker-with-no-clothing? Are conservatives so desperate for a D-list celebrity that they will overlook all to embrace Ted Nugent? Apparently so.
Today’s Wall Street Journal features an op-ed piece by Nugent, who likes to refer to himself as “Uncle Ted.” The piece, “The Summer of Drugs,” is three columns of Nugent bloviation and braggadocio about how he never did drugs on the rock scene in the ’60s and ’70s (a point a lot of bigger name rockers who toured with him dispute) and what a great moral guy he is because he was not like the rest of the ’60s generation.

Ted Nugent: Portrait of a Hypocrite

All fiction, since Nugent–a Draft Dodger–divorced his wife, used his rock star money to gain sole custody of the kids, lived with a teen groupie who raised the kids (he was too busy touring), cheated on his second wife, Shemane, and had a kid outside of wedlock with Karen Gutowski of New Hampshire, with whom he fought against paying child support for years.

**** UPDATE, 02/17/09: That’s in addition to the two other kids Ted Nugent had out of wedlock with two other different women by the time he turned 21. That’s right. Ted Nugent fathered SEVEN kids with FIVE different women, to which only two of whom he was married. ****

It’s hilarious to read “Uncle Ted” Nugent moralizing to us in the Journal, including these passages, since he’s not exactly the ideal utterer of them:

Turned off by the work ethic and productive American Dream values of their parents, hippies instead opted for a cowardly, irresponsible lifestyle of random sex, life-destroying drugs and mostly soulless rock music that flourished in San Francisco. . . .
A quick study of social statistics before and after the 1960s is quite telling. The rising rates of divorce, high school drop outs, drug use, abortion, sexual diseases and crime, not to mention the exponential expansion of government and taxes, is dramatic. The “if it feels good, do it” lifestyle born of the 1960s has proved to be destructive and deadly.

I agree with all of these things, but can’t hear them coming from Ted Nugent. From him it sounds more like “The Nudge,” instead of another one of his favorite self-monikers, “The Nuge.” It’s too much Nugent saying, “Do as I say, not as I do,” especially since his battle to avoid paying for his illegitimate kid was just two years ago. (Everyone falls for his phony act, though, since Nugent was once named “Father of the Year,” by some ignorant group.)
And here’s how he got out of serving in Vietnam, where many of his fans died fighting. From a July 15, 1990 Detroit Free Press Sunday Magazine profile:

And he is equally proud that the Michigan Legislature this year proclaimed him a “wholesome, traditional” man of “honesty, integrity, loyalty and patriotism.”

But Nugent wanted no part of Vietnam. He claims that 30 days before his draft board physical, he stopped all forms of personal hygiene. The last 10 days, he ingested nothing but Vienna sausages and Pepsi; and a week before his physical, he stopped using bathrooms altogether, virtually living inside pants caked with his own excrement, stained by his urine.

That spectacle won Nugent a deferment, he says, although the Free Press was unable to verify his draft status.
“The men who went should be applauded, but if I would have gone over there, I’d have been killed, or I’d have killed all the hippies in the foxholes . . . I would have killed everybody.” [DS: In other words, let them do the job for me, while I rock and lounge over here in safety. Whatever, Ted.]

WITH HIS WORRIES ABOUT THE draft out of the way — “I never heard from them again” — Nugent focused on his band.

And don’t forget this from the New York Post in 2004:

Courtney Love phoned into The Howard Stern Show on Monday (March 22) before eventually coming into the studio where she made the shocking allegation that one of the first times she had oral sex was with Ted Nugent. She said she was young and she didn’t want to say exactly how old she was, but eventually confessed she was 12-year-old – which would have made Nugent approximately 28 years old at the time. The New York Post attempted to contact Nugent for a response but was unsuccessful. Moderators at Nugent’s official forum deleted the only thread asking about the topic as evidenced by the forum’s search giving a file not found error for the matched thread. She added it was a long time ago and she didn’t even have breasts yet.

Ted Nugent also likes to call himself “the Motor City Madman” (he has a lot of bloated, self-important nicknames). But Ted Nugent moralizing to the rest of America as if he’s the opponent–instead of the embodiment–of ’60s morality doesn’t have a thing to do with the Motor City. It’s just plain Mad.
(Given all this, it’s notable that Sean the Plagiarist Hannity likes him so much and features him so much on his cable and radio show. Well, at least, I know this is one thing I’ve written that Vannity won’t be plagiarizing anytime soon.)

Very disappointing. I thought I liked Ted Nugent, but as the daughter of a 2X war veteran (Korea & Viet Nam), I am appalled at what he did to avoid the draft. Shame, shame, shame…He should walk the halls of some of our vet hospitals and beg forgiveness!

Just days ago a large corporation let idiots post Ted Nugent posters of an upcoming “concert” (and I use the word concert loosely because it usually denotes music, something of which Nugent knows nothing about.) on a community bulletin board. Being ex USAF, a woman, an engineering in electronics I find it very tough to not to announce to everyone who went that Nugent is nothing but a foul mouthed brainless idiot and thanks to my selfless service to the military, I could knock a gnat off of his non-existent testicles. But I just shake my heads at the oxygen thieves of the world and know that I have faith in God and know that truly, he who lives by the scum, dies by the scum. He dodged the draft just like Bush, Limbaugh and the rest. I JOINED. I carry a set of brass ball bearings in my pocket just in case I have to show them to someone like Nugent, but then again why bother, he has none of his own so he has no reference point. Racist, communist, war monger, idiot. Hopefully I will not be the one on the EMT team who finds him bleeding in a ditch after he shot himself. I would not save him. I would like to think I would have more class than that, to rise above, but as my Air Force training taught me, sometimes no matter how hard you try to help someone, they are just not SALVAGABLE. Had I spoken about Reagan or either of the Bushs while serving in the military in the manner of which Nugent speaks of Obama, a man who has had the largest manure pile of a deficit dumped in his lap, I would still be serving time in Leavenworth. Shameful that we as human beings have not risen above stupidity. Pray, Nugent that a black man, gay woman, anti-gun supporter or a vegan is not the only person standing between your living and dying. Pray HARD. (OR DON’T YOU KNOW HOW?)

USAF???? Why would you refer to your selfless service to the military? It’s the Air Force!!!

Who gives a shit about Ted Nugent, Great White Buffalo was an amazing jam when i was in Jr high school, Wand Dang Sweet Puntang was too. So F’n what, he’s no worse then Alex Baldwin, who is a full shit liberal asshole. He is not an asshoile because he is a liberal–he is just an asshole. I only pay attention to the truth and Hollywood stars famous peeps don’t give it.
One thing i don’t get about Bush bashers like the Corporal (thanks for your service ma’am)- how come if Bush was that bad, and yea he was, why don’t you admit that Obama is FAR FAR worse, yes he is. Everyhting you said that was bad about Bush Obama has made even worse. Name one thing he has fixed? Nothing! Everything he has done since taking over is make Bush look not so bad. Not one of Obama’s policys have worked. Not one! Every negative statistic in the every area of country has grown larger under his watch. From Unemployment, to welfare rolls, to student drop outs to housing sales, to the deficit, to import export ratio, to percentage of our own oil we use, to military enlistings, to…. well everything has gotten worse not better, that’s how i judge a president, regardless of party, can he fix things? Make us better as a country? This president can’t fix shit, he seems to be intentionally hell bent on destroying our way of life!!

This is the same guy that kills defenseless animals and LOVES it. He wants to kill but doesn’t want to be killed – all is well as long as he has the gun I guess. I haven’t heard any of his political crap because I typically don’t watch celebs making asses out of them selves when they need to just stick to what they do and shut up. I never had a problem with Ted Nugent’s music (before I knew about the hunting and draft issue) but it now seems I have a problem with his philosophy.

Rhonda on August 25, 2010 at 8:49 am

What’s wrong if a guy wants to hunt, live off the land, and eat meat that he is willing to hunt for? God gave over animals for man to be over. Since the beginning of time, people have used animals in many ways: for labor saving work, food, clothing, tools, shelter, and who know what else. I’m no hunter, but if I knew how to gut a deer, I probably would hunt. There are limitations and huge fines for those who break rules. I would rather a person shoot a deer and eat it as to see one laying on the side of the road, dead, after a car/truck took it out and is rotting.

What’s even more interesting is what Cathy O’Brien has to say.As far as Ted goes…He had dna taken in N.H. and proved he wasn’t the father. The Draft ? Ted was deferred as he was enrolled in college, just like everyone else in that situation….However he is one Horny Bastard

S: Wrong. Ted IS the father of the kid in New Hampshire, which is why he’s been required to pay child support after fighting it for so long. Even he admits this, so why are you lying for him? When Nugent got his fraudulently obtained student deferment, he was touring and was NOT in school. He should be behind bars for that, but is, instead, a conservative hero (for no reason). The second time, he “failed” his physical b/c he didn’t take a shower for 30 days and went to bathroom in his pants, wearing the same clothes for a month. Wake up. He is a DRAFT DODGER. DS

what college would that be? well, we’re waiting.

Harry A. Hole on June 13, 2011 at 12:22 pm

I think you’ve got a whole lot of your “facts” completely wrong. For starters, you believe anything that comes out of Courteny’s mouth? Another thing, that story about crapping his pants was totally made up. Totally. He was joking with a reporter/someone about how stupid reporters are and made up a story and, ironically, they printed that story. You’re a lawyer, why don’t you get the public records and see if that’s the reason he didn’t serve? As for the kids, I doubt your sources are anything more than heresay and possibly some money-seeking lawyered-up psycho fan claiming a kid was his. As for drugs/alcohol, I met his cousin Mike once and Mike said all the anti-drug anti-alcohol stuff is 100% true. But hey, if you heard Courteny Hole say something else, well, gee, a coked-up drugged-out whore’s word might be good enough for you, but it’s not good journalism. I say you’re slandering Ted.

MT: Wow, you are incredibly gullible . . . and a liar. You are the slanderer here. In fact, Nugent lied and got a fradulently obtained student deferment WHILE he was touring with his band, NOT in school. Then, later, he failed his draft physical because he, in fact, did everything he said he did to draft dodge and get out of it. He told the same story to several publications. Then, years later, he came up with this phony, “I was joking” story. Was he “joking” when he told the federal government he was going to school, and instead was touring with his band while his fellow Americans died in Vietnam? The woman who sued him for child support won and even he now admits it was HIS kid, you moron. Get a frickin’ clue. You wouldn’t know journalism and reporting if it pissed into your mouth. DS

Mark Thomas on November 1, 2010 at 6:39 pm

sounds more like your the one spouting BS and hearsay. cousin mike was probably getting the drugs and skanks for him. if ted nugent isn’t on drugs, he should be.

Harry A. Hole on June 13, 2011 at 12:25 pm

A model Republican. Magnificent hypocracy, littering the world with his bastard children, pedophilic relationships, and like every other Republican, the louder they talk, the less sense they make. Draft dodging, bloviating buffoon. The next time he goes hunting I hope it’s in a filed full of Democrats in gilley suits.

Gman007 on September 13, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Ted acts, now, like he is a pro-gun activist?? Who remembers when he sided with Smith&Wesson when they betrayed the constitution and the people??
As far as Ted’s drug use; anyone that knows “any” thing about music knows that “Strangle Hold” was definitely drug inspired….. You can’t tell me he wasn’t high on, at least, Marijuana when he wrote that one….
I think hypocrite Ted does what makes him popular at any given time. If he is killing innocent wildlife for food is one thing, for sport is another…
