Masculinized Wonder Woman Becomes . . . Michelle Obama?!

By Debbie Schlussel

Since I’ve previously written about the changing, ever-more-butch images of “Wonder Woman,” a number of readers asked me what I thought of the newest incarnation.  My feelings are mixed, though mostly I hate it.  First, I think the outfit on the new version is ugly and not superhero-esque.  The black skinny pants are stupid, and the whole outfit doesn’t look patriotic at all, which was the whole idea with the “Wonder Woman” costume.  It’s dark and drab and the garb of a trapeze artist or someone headed out to a night at a club. There’s no bright red or blue. It’s singed and sullen, like what a drug addicted supermodel wears before she’s found dead from OD’ing.

New “Wonder Woman” Ain’t Wonder Woman

On the other hand, if you compare the newest “Wonder Woman” with the most recent ones–several versions of what looks like a man on steroids with long hair (see below)–I like the newest one far better.  It’s far more feminine.  And “Wonder Woman” is supposed to be feminine, not Women She-Man.  The masculine “Wonder Woman” versions are ugly and unappealing.  This one is better,  but past versions were the best.  Think the comic strip version of the Lynda Carter.  It’s trite but oh so true:  if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.  And who said “Wonder Woman” was broken?

wonderwomanmichelleobama

But the worst version of “Wonder Woman” is the one above, which the Detroit Free Press created, supposedly a mixture of two loony wacko-ettes, Michelle Obama and Katy Perry.  PUH-LEEZE.  Considering either of these fiends–not to mention, both–as “Wonder Woman,” is taking the woman out of “Wonder Woman.”  And the wonder, too.  Sorry, but “Wonder Woman” doesn’t sing songs about being a lesbian, and she isn’t engaged to an unfunny comedian who dresses up as Bin Laden and hates America.

Check out the changing “Wonder Woman” images, below, which I’ve posted on this site before.  What do you think of the new and unimproved “Wonder Woman”? . . .

Slightly tickled that the only other blog I read to affirm a fanhood of WW and post on this change is a far-left gay history prof who blogs at Center of Gravitas.

Hey, we have a transexual as first lady who is worshipped by the politically correct as being beautiful (maybe in the tranny world of Bangkok), so why not a Wonderwoman who looks has the body of Hulk Hogan and the face of Amy Winehouse?

jgrant on July 12, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Absolutely right on the tranny look. I’ve always said that Dennis Rodman is the first lady in drag. The p.c. ho’s can dress her up in whatever designer they want but Michelle looks like his jaw is too big and the shoulders too broad to pass as feminine.

samurai on July 13, 2010 at 3:00 am

Originally, this is the politically correct version of Wonderwoman. Not of those nasty Stars and Stripes, or great Red, White, & Blue colors that identified her as an American Patriot. Not in the post-patriotic age.

jgrant on July 12, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Isn’t she an Amazonian not an American?

Brian on July 12, 2010 at 4:40 pm

You’re absolutely right about the patriotic theme of Wonder Woman being taken out of the new version. Is this new incarnation a hollyweird version? If so then it makes sense, Libtards being anti-American and all. I could see an updated, fresh look to the standard outfit, but to make it dark, gritty, “graphic novelesk” is just sad…. Like you said, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

perception of truth on July 12, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Oh, and yes the transexual Michelle version makes me want to vomit! But then again, looking at the first transexual squatting in the white house makes me want to vomit.

perception of truth on July 12, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Someone wrote in the Washington Post(of all places) that Obama is the first female President.

Well, there is support for this position.

He has no balls when dealing with adversaries.

When he does not get his way, he gets pouts and gets moody, like he is on his period.

He gets wet around foreign dictators like King Saud.

And Finally, he acts like a little bitch.

No offense to Debbie, who is a real woman. Of course, Obama just may be a castrato who likes America to take it up the butt.

jgrant on July 12, 2010 at 4:19 pm

The new outfit reminds me of that cartoon character, Natasha (remember Boris and Natasha?) on the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Yeah, another Natasha…

J.S. on July 12, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Whether straight, lesbian or bi-sexual, Wonder Woman shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence with Michele Obama. Wonder Woman isn’t real of course, but M. Obama is…just real ugly. Even though she’s married to that Lying, decieving muslim a-hole we suffer as potus, I wondered how they managed to have children. I think Barak makes her wear a burka to bed.

rdj120 on July 12, 2010 at 4:31 pm

Who says they are HIS kids?

I agree with you 100% Debbie & as you have in the past dealt with comics-related issues (I’m a diehard comics fan), I’m so glad you addressed this issue.

I personally don’t care for WW’s “new look” either, for all the reasons you’ve given, plus 2 more: (1) She no longer looks unique, immediately identifiable as WW anymore; instead, she looks like any one of several dozen generic knock-off immediately forgettable comics characters from any one of several dozen also-ran generic, immediately forgettable comics series. (***Yawn***, in other words..) And (2) Her Original, “Classic” outfit was undeniably, partiotically American. The new look clearly is not. Presumably, the artist who came up with the new look (and the numbskull who thought WW’s look needed updating) has little regard for such things as “patriotism” and “Americanism”, (as does our current Prez, needless to say), apparently believes they’re somehow old-fashioned & out of date. If so, what a sad, deplorable message to send to the new, young comics-readers of today. If anything, we need patriotism now more than ever.

I personally hope this “new look” backfires on DC, the way it did when they tries to update “Superman’s” look a few years ago (at which time they quickly learned: You don’t tug on Superman’s cape!) That way, they can switch back to the “Classic” look (the sooner the better.)

Paul GC on July 12, 2010 at 4:36 pm

MHO would be a good model for the new She Hulk – or even better a shaved Bigfoot.

Pauly D on July 12, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Wonder Woman is supposed to the total package: a Goddess of beauty, strength,- not a girly-man with botox and fake funbags. How PC!

patrick on July 12, 2010 at 5:12 pm

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Wonder Woman looking sexy which she certainly does in her new costume, much more than before. It’s also true that Wonder Woman is competing with other comics such as FemForce who have very sexy-looking heroines, so part of it may be survival many of the readers are men.

PC is nothing new to Wonder Woman analysis. She has appealed to feminists ever since her inception around 1940, and her popularity dovetailed with the increasing roles open to women during World War II. I really didn’t know until a few years ago that in the 70s Gloria Steinem helped edit an anthology of Wonder Woman stories from the Golden Age in the 40s, and other feminists collaborated with Steinem in this project. Yes, her early stories were pro-American, as was her red, white and blue costume, although like all DC publications, liberalism was smuggled into her stories.

Little Al on July 12, 2010 at 5:46 pm

I always liked Linda Carter as Wonder Woman! Her bracelets could bounce bullets. I can’t recognize this one.

You American conservatives are monsters.

Norman Blitzer on July 12, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Yawn, it takes a monster to know one.

    Worry01 on July 12, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Why do you hang out here blither? Must have a deep seated urge to feel superior to those who are superior to you. Hmmm I deem you unfit for my time, thumbs down to you you blithering idiot libtard. You know we’re all correct. Not p.c. but correct.

samurai on July 13, 2010 at 3:04 am

and you liberals are idiots and bigots, out to destroy America.

JGrant on July 13, 2010 at 8:55 am

Personally,I like the old Wonder Woman myself and I’m not just saying that because I’m male.

Ghostwriter on July 12, 2010 at 6:40 pm

BS”D Definitely Goth heroin girl these days, Debbie. a-Yup!

Sarah Leah Lawent on July 12, 2010 at 6:48 pm

If they really want to “redesign” Wonder Woman, they need to employ the services of Boris Vallejo. Forget this gothic PC un-feminine crap.

I just hope they keep the invisible airplane. I know it’s against Liberal philosophy to give the good guys an advantage, tactical or otherwise.

John on July 12, 2010 at 7:27 pm

Well they redesigned Superman’s custome, and look how long that lasted.

Don’t worry people, they’ll be forced to go back to the stars and stripes look.

To the person who asked is WW not an american. Well nether is superman.

Squirrel3D on July 12, 2010 at 9:59 pm

She’s supposed to be amazonian – how come she’s so white? For that matter – how come all the pictures of Jesus are so white?

I suppose people paint their fictions however they wish.

IMHO, I like the very first Wonder Woman, the one that appears right below “From Feminine to Masculine: The Changing “Wonder Woman” . . .” the best.

JeffE on July 12, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Debbie Dear..you give her far too much attention. She is just a chick married to the president. Jackie Kennedy she is not. The less Michelle talks, and the less I hear her name, the more I like her.

#1 Vato on July 12, 2010 at 11:53 pm

I think this was the second time they tried to update Wonder Woman’s “look”; the first time (which likewise bombed, and deservedly so) was in the late 1960’s/early ’70’s, during the “bra burning” craze.

ConcernedPatriot on July 13, 2010 at 1:35 am

I always loved WW. Having a Mom who was also a doctor, it was no big deal that WW had a career and was capable. It was also the era of Dale Evans, who, you’ll remember, opened the show riding hard on Ol’ Buttermilk firing her six-shooter. There was also an Annie Oakley series in the 50’s. Forget who the actress was.
WW was white but her hair was black and in an era when I refused to play with dolls because they were ALL blond, that was something I could relate to. Sorry Debbie, but I don’t get the “blond” thing if it’s not natural.
I tried a blond wig once and it was hideous with my skin color so Blonds don’t always have more fun. I did just fine with my natural chestnut naturally highlighted with red.
My only question was how did WW keep her costume on when she was fighting bad guys? Did they have double stick tape back then?

mk750 on July 13, 2010 at 6:06 am

If I wanted to look at dominatrix in slutty apparel I would go to the porno store or the local strip joint. When I go to the comic book rack, I expect to see a wholesome all American female super hero. Our country is sinking deeper and deeper into the filth.

Farmer John on July 13, 2010 at 11:13 am

Looking at the last two images you posted, I just wonder how many women have thighs that size, and the second to last one really reminds me of the poster for Howard Stern’s “Private Parts”: http://blog.turntablelab.com/privatepartsdvd.jpg

David on July 13, 2010 at 11:16 am

Is this for real, or its a joke. I am extremely right wing, and despise the Muslim, communist Obamas…I hate the way Michelle dresses, she does not cover her arms, and wears very bright colours. BUT what do we care what her body and face look like, or this is the joke, because it really doesnèt matter. They got the power, they are abusing the power, they hate whites, Jews, freedom and America no matter what they look like!

Suzanne Weinstein on July 13, 2010 at 2:18 pm

I agree Susan, it’s fine to discuss of a pop culture icon but what relevance does it have to MO or vice versa?

    mk750 on July 13, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Schlussel, this is definitely the second most important article ever posted on this website. Of course, the first was the one where you threw a tantrum when Archie married Veronica instead of Betty. Please continue to keep me abreast of these matters. If Lois Lane is secretly having an affair with Spiderman, I demand to know about it!

Daniel H on July 14, 2010 at 12:00 am

Hey Hey,
The Wonder Woman prototype looks like Michael Jackson after his failed plastic surgery. What’s the message here? HHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Justin on July 14, 2010 at 12:05 am

Have to take the American out of Wonder Woman just as they did with the gay superman in the last horrific movie. In that movie they turned Superman in to a beer drinking stalking ex boyfriend. Perry White even dropped the American ball when saying “Does he still stand for truth, justice and that other stuff”
oh and their have been rumors floating for over a year that Beyonce wants and is being considered to play Wonder Woman in a new movie. So at least Wonder Woman would then become more American again as Affirmative Action Woman.
