“Fathers” Day: Half of US Fathers Had Illegit Kids; 76% of Dads 20-24

By Debbie Schlussel

Congrats, America.  We are now officially BabyDaddy Nation.  What an incredible achievement.  China and South Korea are making goods and scientists, and we are making babies with no dads.  Gee, and you wonder why we are lagging behind.

For Many of These Guys, It’s Just Sperm Donors’ Day

As you know, America celebrates Father’s Day on Sunday.  But, unfortunately, numbers show that for men age 44-and-under in America, half of them aren’t really fathers, just sperm donors.  It’s not all their fault–it takes two, and many women keep them out of their kids’ lives or refuse marriage or enjoy the high-paid, glamorous life of being the reality TV star daughter of a famous half-governor.  But the statistics from Pew Reserch Center are scary and a disturbing trend for America and its complete social breakdown.

Declining marriage rates and increases in out-of-wedlock births and multi-partner fertility have given rise to complicated family structures and have increased the likelihood that fathers will not reside with all of their children. According to the NSFG [National Survey of Family Growth, Pew Research Center], nearly half of all fathers (46%) now report that at least one of their children was born out of wedlock, and 31% report that all of their children were born out of wedlock. In addition, some 17% of men with biological children have fathered those children with more than one woman.

Yay. All hail the Ted-Nugent-Spread-My-Seed-With-6-Women-and-8-Kids-While-Dodging-the-Vietnam-Draft phenomenon.

It’s sad that many media reports I read about this research refer to “fathers ages 15-44.”  Um, here’s a tip, America:  if you are 15, you are NOT a father in any sense of the word and probably never will be.  You are just a sperm donor.

And it gets worse.  Look at the graph above.  More than three-quarters of all births to men age 20-24 are illegitimate.

Nearly half (46%) of men ages 15 to 44 with biological children report that at least one of their children was born outside of marriage,5 and 31% report that all of their children were born outside of marriage. In contrast, 69% report that they have had at least one of their children within a marriage.

Among young and middle-aged men, the likelihood of having a child out of wedlock varies by cohort. Among biological fathers ages 20 to 24, more than three-fourths (76%) have had a child out of wedlock, while this share drops to 36% for fathers ages 35 to 44.

There are notable differences by race and ethnicity, as well. Some 37% of white biological dads have had at least one child out of wedlock, while 77% have had a birth within a marriage. Black and Hispanic fathers are much more likely to report having had a nonmarital birth. Among black men, 72% have had a child out of wedlock, and 48% have had one in marriage; and among Hispanic men, 59% have had a birth out of wedlock, and 58% have had a birth within a marriage. . . .

Just over half (55%) of men with biological children are married to the biological mother of all of those children. An additional 7% of biological fathers are cohabiting with the mother of their children.

I’ve written before about the fact that 41% of births to American women are illegit. Sadly, it’s now hip on both the left AND the right to carry out this final destruction of the American family unit. Remember, the Bristol Palins of the world and absentee mothers, like her selfish, ambition-chasing mom, Sarah, are as much to blame for this kind of stuff as the Levi Johnstons of the world and his parents.

And glamorizing teen moms, like Bristol Palin doesn’t help stem these statistics. It helps make the statistics get worse.

Father’s Day? Its women who are now both fathers and mothers.

And the guy is simply a sperm donor – not even a real Dad.

Its a travesty we celebrate this day. And you and I may be the last people on earth to have known loving father whom we miss very much.

Its sad.

Deb, the blame for part of this problem lies with the Federal Government. The government program, “Aid to Dependent Children” makes it easy, and often profitable, to have kids out of wedlock. Compared with food stamps, housing allowances, etc., it is in fact profitable.

Here in the People’s Republic of Montgomery County, Md., at a public meeting with the county executive, a black woman got up and complained that she was a single mother with three kids, and could not afford a house in Montgomery County. She was a school aide (= no college education). People in the room actually applauded the fact that she worked in an unnecessary tax robbing job in the public school system, and were sympathetic to her.

Hey, why doesn’t her children’s father buy her a home? Why do I as a taxpayer have to buy her a home? And obviously, the kids are not homeless, so what was wrong with her apartment?

And if you wanted to do better in life, why not keep your legs closed, or had the children’s father (or fathers) use a condom?

Geez, we are doomed!

Jonathan E. Grant on June 17, 2011 at 4:12 pm

There are no illegitimate children, only illegitimate parents….

Gino on June 17, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Who cares about paternity? As long as you have Mrs. Dad around, you’ll have a loving and stable family.

Nothing to see here and its time to move on.

NormanF on June 17, 2011 at 4:17 pm

I think the most telling stat is only 13% of college grads have children born out of wedlock. Definitely a bad trend, but i wonder what the total number of births are per age group versus the percentage.

Just found out the other day that my wife and I are having a baby girl! That’s right, I said, wife. So apparently I’m in the good half of the 30-34 year olds. I’ll tell you, I’ve made a lot of piss-poor choices in my day, but I’m really glad I’m doing this one right. I saw my daughter’s hands and feet move for the first time in the ultrasound the other day – I can’t wait to meet her.

The worst part is having people at work come up and want to tell me about their friend who’s also pregnant…and also single. Uh-uh. Don’t you be comparing my conceived in marriage with a committed mother and father to your friend who got knocked up by whoever she’s seeing right now. There’s no comparison.

Anyway, I’m gonna be a dad! :-)

matt on June 17, 2011 at 9:21 pm

Wow, are you sure these numbers apply to all guys in the country, or are these numbers just the ones for guys in the NBA, NFL, MLB, as well as college football and basketball players?

CornCoLeo on June 17, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I knew the breakdown would show some extreme over representation by certain sectors of the population. It’s not just for the under educated either. I’ve seen first hand some college edumacated scum bags that aren’t the least bit ashamed at birthing bastard after bastard. Rome continues to burn.

samurai on June 17, 2011 at 9:26 pm

This is the great contribution of feminism. Women don’t need men and children don’t need fathers.

Congrats, America! Actually no – since no society in which the traditional family unit has disappeared has ever survived more than a few generations.

The social breakdown of American social life doesn’t augur well for our country’s future. We have here a broken hearth.

NormanF on June 17, 2011 at 9:38 pm

Ah, no Gino…sorry, but your little Liberal-esque play on words does NOT help the problem.

This issue is an issue that I get rabid over. I am thankful DS is as strong on this issue because many women today flake it off or poo-poo it. That is part of the reason why we are in this sordid mess.

Being a baby-daddy is NOT cool. Being a single mum is the most uncool thing on Earth.

Gino, if you really cared about the kids, you would not get hung-up on silly word-play and instead be disgusted that the idiots who are baby-daddies and single mums are doing more harm to their children AND THIS COUNTRY than anyone else in their selfish, messed-up lives.

Skunky on June 17, 2011 at 10:20 pm

I am a single 31 year old male with no plans on having kids. Just not my thing. However, it is amazing how many girls have multiple children. I actually have come to learn that any girl over the age of 20 has at least one child, and of course the dad is long gone. Usually it is grandparents that end up taking care of these kids while the girls are whoring it up in bars. I managed a bar for several years and I saw this. Some moms would bring their kids in and would be kind enough to let the employees watch them while they get drunk and whorey.
Several years ago a girl asked if I would be willing to father a kid, that I wouldn’t have anything to do with it, but just provide the genes. Her angle was that she found out that she could get free college, housing, and WIC. She wanted all of these things so she could buy a brand new Chrysler 300, because “Hey, it looks like a Bentley”.
I could bore you with a thousand more stories, but it is sick to see this happen. It isn’t like these kids are going to grow up and be productive. All they will learn is how to abuse a system.
There is absolutely no reward for not being a total screw up.

Forsberg on June 17, 2011 at 10:52 pm

“Usually it is grandparents that end up taking care of these kids while the girls are whoring it up in bars.”

Basically, all of America is being drug down to the level of lower class black Americans. (That sounds stereotyping, but it’s one that black America has largely done to itself. That 72% statistic!)

The solution…there is none. We are an increasingly trashy society who values entertainment and short term gain over education and investment.

All we can hope for is that whoever ends up owning the USA fixes some of the problems.

I for one, welcome our new Chinese overlords.

Denoted on June 18, 2011 at 12:44 am

Wrong. There is a solution. Cut off welfare money. Make it hard to be a single mother. Right now, it is profitable, given all the welfare benefits.

Jonathan E. Grant on June 18, 2011 at 10:32 am

Yessir, having a baby regardless of marriage is now a “right”,just like all the other phony rights that are plaguing us.

Maybe we should have a holiday in July called “illegitimate children’s day” to match Mothers Day and Fathers Day.

Little Al on June 18, 2011 at 7:55 am

First, the Pew Research information was conducted from 2006 phone interviews, so people had to be home and answer a call from an unknown caller. Not really the greatest database.

Second, the NSFG research (read carefully the Pew Research and the NSFG research are not the same) shows that clearly eduction is the difference in who has babies and when. Just a though maybe if we weren’t fighting two and half wars we might have little extra cash to spend on schools.

Third, the study shows that fathers are spending more time with their kids.

Pete Bone on June 18, 2011 at 12:19 pm

(This is a re-post of my comment on Facebook)
OK I read the article and seen the numbers. It clearly shows you that issues in economics are priority here. Obviously people who are more financially stable will be more receptive to marriage than the ones who are not because they have to worry about other cost of life let alone marriage cost expectations. The evidence is there when you look @ the education percentages and we all know that higher education has a greater chance to lead to financial stability, well @ least a few years back it did lol. So Yea, the author can draw the conclusion of wedlock but it seems to be some what of a social and financial necessity.

Avery/Avelliii on June 18, 2011 at 2:50 pm

Avery, you have totally glossed over what happens to the and the effect on CHILDREN…which is the undisputable most important variable here. Always and forever.

Skunky on June 18, 2011 at 6:30 pm

As does Peter Bone…as always…more interested in sticking to his Liberal agenda than looking at data OR EVEN MOST IMPORTANTLY, life going on around him.

Since I was a kid I knew that lifestyle was wrong and disgusting.
Keep working that hamster wheel though! It’s all about Liberals feeling great about themselves.

OT, since you are the resident shrink, I’d love your opinion on NARCISSISM and how it has mal-effected our society.

Skunky on June 18, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Skunk,
I didn’t gloss over the impact to society, my point was that the data isn’t really reliable, (or are you just more concerned with sticking to your conservative talking points?)

Also I’m not saying that single parent families or baby daddies are the way to go, my point is that unreliable data dosen’t prove your point. You simply saying something is disgusting dosen’t make it disgusting.

Pete Bone on June 18, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Bone, you can chuck the “conservative” talking points. I have been BOTH Liberal and Conservative. My natural inclination was to be DISGUSTED by it…then as a young Liberal, I tried to see it as not so bad. That point of view was WRONG…and I came back to my natural and the NATURAL TRUTH opinion…single mumhood and baby-daddyhood IS DISGUSTING.

All those statistics are great BUT I know in my lifetime what I have seen and what I see now and how it affects the kids…and I also like to NOT differentiate between RICH babies-out-of-wedlock and POOR babies-out-of-wedlock. It’s all bad.

You can act, in 2011, as it’s all kool and the gang but you really know it’s NOT. You’re just working the hamster wheel.

Single motherhood is bad for the kids as is baby-daddyhood.

And if you think kids don’t want a good dad, you should pay attention to all the kids trying to track down sperm-donors from sperm banks. It’s sad and it’s disgusting. And you know it, you just wanna feel better about yo’ bad self. We know you.

Skunky on June 18, 2011 at 8:35 pm

And what is it that you think Sarah Palin should have done? How is she in any way responsible for this? That’s a total stretch, Debbie.

S: Uh, no, Palinmessiah moron. For the millionth time for you blind faith morons who support Sarah Palin no matter what she does, Sarah Palin abandoned her family to pursue her selfish political ambitions, which was when her daughter was screwing around and got pregnant. Then, Sarah Palin actively PROMOTED, GLAMORIZED, AND NEGOTIATED magazine covers and spreads about her daughter’s single motherhood. If blaming her for abandoning her family and then actively promoting and glamorizing single motherhood is not her fault, who’s is it? Osama Bin Laden? What Sarah Palin SHOULD have done is be home to raise her family and take care of her kids, and then after her daughter had the kid, she should not have spent the last two years promoting her babymama daughter and glamorizing her non-stop. Sarah Palin was supposed to be her mother. Instead, she is merely a womb donor who left to be Mayor and Governor and later came back to be her babymama daughter’s pimp. If facing these facts and presenting the truth about this fraud Palin is a total stretch, you are a total imbecile. Wake up, Palinmessiah morons. Get a frickin’ clue. . . and a brain. DS

Susanne on June 18, 2011 at 8:11 pm

“And what is it that you think Sarah Palin should have done?”
NOT made a showcase out of it. Sarah Palin used the whole situation to push ‘Sarah Palin’. She basically used all the publicity to her advantage. As they say in Hollywood, any publicity, good or bad, is always good, especially for ‘superstars’ like Obama and Palin.

“And glamorizing teen moms, like Bristol Palin doesn’t help stem these statistics. It helps make the statistics get worse.”
    …did you miss that part?

theShadow on June 18, 2011 at 10:20 pm

The same people who celebrate Bristol are the same people who attack unwed urban black ghetto moms. Apparently, single babymamahood is acceptable if its the right womb. The hypocrisy doesn’t exactly make conservatives look sincere in stemming the disintegration of the traditional family unit. You can’t have it both ways.

NormanF on June 19, 2011 at 12:44 am

That kind of lifestyle in not conservatism. But conservatives seem to have no problem abandoning principle as soon as the right candidate appears. I thought people taking responsibility for themselves and their family is a conservative value. Not to the Palinmessiah crowd.

NormanF on June 19, 2011 at 12:41 am

Deb, I try to be a decent father and for the past two years that I’ve been visiting your site I read some very inspirational Father’s Day blogs. I especially like reading about your father and how he inspired and shaped your life. This one has been a total downer. I like being reminded of my worth as a father and I hope you post something a little kinder tomorrow. Thank You and G-D bless.
…and ‘Happy Father’s Day’ to all the daddies out there!

theShadow on June 18, 2011 at 10:32 pm

Skunk,
Never said kids don’t want a dad.
It seems that both left and right often simply say, this is the way I think and I’m right. Which is fine when it comes to voting and your beliefs, but utterly useless when trying to make an argument in a public forum.

PS Can the ‘we know you’ crap, because you don’t Coolio.

Pete Bone on June 18, 2011 at 11:40 pm

Uh, Bone, your type is a dime a dozen. Like a bag of M&M’s. Don’t worry…just ‘cuz I know you’re a kool-aide drinker doesn’t mean I’d ever want to know you in real life. I can throw a rock and hit your clone from where I’m standing. ZZZZZZZZZZ

And you skirt around the crux of my argument because you know you’re just frontin’ homie. So sad, too bad. There are Liberals who can debate their point of view. You’re not one of them ‘cuz you’re a back-bencher. ZZZZZZ.

Skunky on June 19, 2011 at 12:14 am

      Skunk,
Your argument seems to be ,’Cuz I said so.’ Way to really prove a point.

If you could actually read what I posted,(rather than spend your time thinking up outdated pop culture references, homie), you see that I’m not in favor of single parent families. It’s just that this is a rather dubious study.

Pete Bone on June 19, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Stop idiot-dumping (projecting) on me, Bone. Your sad (and ONLY) argument is “the study is flawed”. Which is the Liberal 101 DEFAULT answer BTW. PROVE IT! I’m waiting…

My TRUTHY opinion is that having kids out of wedlock and being a baby-daddy not only is disgusting, but hurts the child…which can go on to hurt SOCIETY and the adult relationships that said child will have and so on and so on.

What do YOU do? Dismiss that TRUTH with a snarky “Ooooooh, the study is flawed”. Bullsh, and you know it. It’s just Liberal YOU kicking against the natural TRUTH…with not having an objective look at what out-of-wedlock births and baby-daddyism DOES to the KIDS and us ALL.

Blacks have a 71% out-of-wedlock birth-rate and that sad TRUTH is destroying them. I happen to think Blacks are selling themselves way short by NOT attacking that issue (don’t look at it now…wouldn’t be PC!). In our soceity, the default image of Black Americans happen to be the hip-hop culture. I resent that. Black Americans are not all ghetto-ized fools with big entitlement jones’. All that crap would STOP if they would do all they need to to quell that horrible statistic, get serious about healthy families and STOP following the Democrats blindly.

Children DON’T want to NOT have a Dad. Even those conceived by sperm-donors are looking for the sperm donors, for f***ks’ sake! Kids of single Mums DON’T want a million stud boyfriends of their skank Mum coming in and out of their lives. Kids who have Dads they only see on weekends DON’T like that their baby-daddy Dad is shacking-up with some other women who has her own bunch of kids…so dear, old Dad is living with kids that he is NOT the father of while they see them part time.

If you can’t see that as corrosive in this society, you’re beyond help and anyone’s time. I’ve wasted too much of my time on you, but I want to jar the lurkers out of their stupor if they happen to have your stupid ideology.

Skunky on June 19, 2011 at 1:28 pm

          Skunk,

The study doesn’t include mothers and fathers who do get married.

A big chunk of the data was collected by phone call, who answers the phone in the middle of the day? Do you think that a reliable data pool?

Father has three different definitions in the study. At one point including adopted fathers.

Also this study showed that fathers are spending more time with their kids than in the sixties. So according to it and your general observations, fathers being home with their kids is actually destroying the family.

I’m not dismissing your TRUTHY, I’m dismissing this study.

The point I’m making is that you already agreed with what this study is saying so you don’t look at it critically.

Pete Bone on June 20, 2011 at 10:47 am

Debbie I will gladly fertilize your Schlussel egg and co-produce a nice Jewish embryo with you. I expect you to make sure the bastard gets an organic kosher diet and learns Yiddish.

A1 on June 18, 2011 at 11:46 pm

Debbie, would you be kind to a1 and at least castrate his post.

Oleg on June 20, 2011 at 8:59 pm

What shocks me is why would these men who are Fathering Children not want to be apart of their childrens lives. I have an 11 year old daughter and 13 year old son. And though raising them with morals, character and integrity isn’t always easy for me and my wife. It’s definitely the most rewarding job my wife and I have ever had.

RS: Not sure all of these men had/have the choice. Yes, many abandon kids, but many are shut out by the mothers. Just ask Levi Johnston. Bristol Palin was even calling her son by the last name Palin, not the father’s. DS
