“Law & Order” Quota: Show’s Producer Mandates 83% of Criminals Must Be White Rich People

By Debbie Schlussel
Are 83% of criminals in America, wealthy White people? Are they 83% of the murderers (the crime “Law and Order” focuses on)? No, not even close in real life, but they are on “Law and Order.”
My late father always hated when my mother would put “Law & Order” or one of its spin-offs on the TV. In addition to being a show that frequently vilifies Jews and conservative causes and people–such as evangelical Christians, pro-lifers, and the Minutemen–it mostly elevated Muslims and left-wingers, portraying them as victims and those wrongfully accused of crimes. My father would always say that the show was “pretentious”–drivel written by lessers who want to think they’re intellectuals. I share his opinion, by the way, and have said so on this site before.

Now, we have more evidence of the slant of the show, from its creator/producer, Dick Wolf. Saturday, the Wall Street Journal ran a long front page piece on the story of our day: How multi-millionaire Wolf is fighting gazillionaires at NBC/Universal for more than the $750 million fortune he is set to earn from the show. I call it, “Death Match of the Selfish and Self-Important.”
But there was this one interesting nugget of info from the story, which backs up what we conservatives, including my Dad, have been saying about this show for years:

The show has remained almost exactly as Mr. Wolf envisioned. A former advertising copywriter, he sees “Law and Order” as a brand. He tells his writers that the series should be like Campbell’s Soup: many different flavors, all of which are of consistent quality and predictable taste. “Episodic television is the triumph of the familiar,” he is known to say. One way Mr. Wolf maintains this consistency is by making most of the victims wealthy white people, which he believes viewers are more interested in watching. He limits the number of shows containing minority victims, including blacks and Muslims, to four or five episodes a season out of 22 to 24.

That means, under Wolf’s mandate, up to 83% of the criminals on L&O in a 24 episode season will be rich Whites. The lowest figure, based on the Wolf formula, can be 77%.
But–since “Law and Order” focuses on murders–here’s a reality check, courtesy of the Manhattan Institute’s Heather McDonald:

In 2005, the black homicide rate was over seven times higher than that of whites and Hispanics combined, according to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. From 1976 to 2005, blacks committed over 52 percent of all murders in America. In 2006, the black arrest rate for most crimes was two to nearly three times blacks’ representation in the population. Blacks constituted 39.3 percent of all violent-crime arrests, including 56.3 percent of all robbery and 34.5 percent of all aggravated-assault arrests, and 29.4 percent of all property-crime arrests.

“Law & Order”? More like, “Politics of Envy & Racism.”
Sound the “Law & Order” double chime here. Because a crime is taking place, and the villains are show creator/owner Dick Wolf and NBC.

That is so true regarding Law & Order. I always said to my friends that anyone watching any of the L & O’s would think that every homicide in Manhattan was committed by millionaire white men (or women) who live in multi million dollar townhouses on the Upper East Side. Earlier this year on Law & Order SVU there was one particularly stupid episode about a Psychiatrist (Elizabeth McGovern) whom they prosecuted for teaching Army soldiers how to interrogate terrorists not in America but in Iraq! Lat year on Law & Order Criminal Intent there was one episode in which a woman is either a double agent or triple agent for Mossad in Israel and the Chris Noth character (Noth by the way in real life is pro Israel and has visited the country) mouths Buchananite inanities about dual loyalties to his Jewish boss (as if that would happen in real life). The ADA’s on Law & Order sound as if they should be working for the ACLU. The only true ìlaw and orderî tough ADA was Angie Harmon. Jill Hennessey sounded a lot like Michelle Obama! Also on L & O they are always talking about and threatening the death penalty (ìAll youíre going to get is a gurney and a needle in the armî), conveniently ignoring the fact that in liberal New York there is no death penalty (actually one was on the books for a while but it dealt with killing cops. Producer Dick Wolfís politics are so transparent it is laughable. On Criminal Intent the Kathryn Erbe character (Det. Eames) also made a totally out of place snarky comment about Tom DeLay once. On Law & Order SVU the Richard Belzer character (Det. Munch) sounds like Dennis Kucinich.

The Law and Order Criminal Intent episode that I referenced concerning dual loyalties and Israel
The episode was widely criticized for portraying Israel in a harsh and unbalanced light and appearing to promote anti-Semitic stereotypes of Jews as disloyal citizens. The episode shows Israeli bulldozers destroying a Palestinian school and a Jewish police captain who agrees to cover up for Israel by shutting down a criminal investigation at the urging of the head of the local pro-Israel group. In one scene, after Capt. Danny Ross tells his officers to halt their investigation, Det. Mike Logan confronts him and asks, “Are you a Jew first and a cop second?” When one character draws distinctions between the actions of the IDF and the terrorist targeting of civilians by Hamas, Logan cuts him off, implying that it is also common IDF practice to target civilians.[1]

One look at Wolf’s face tells you exactly how slimy and hateful he is.
Ever noticed that none of the filthy-rich White villains, are ever filthy-rich Leftists/Marxists/Communists – you know, like those in Politics,Academe, the news media,or especially, Show Business, the sorts that enjoy shows like these,i.e. Dick Wolf?
This horrid, hateful, propaganda franchise is ,without a doubt, going to run more than 20 seasons, and break the record of “Gunsmoke”, the polar opposite of “L&O” . And I’m convinced Wolf ,being the racist he is, would love nothing better than to do just that;to beat ,in his hateful mind, a show from the pre-Political Correctness/pre-‘Tolerance’ days of TV. I really believe he’s aware of that, and will celebrate it,big time.

OldSchoolW on July 14, 2008 at 10:31 am

Dick Wolf is a greedy soulless bastard and Law and Order is nothing more than sausage churned out in the same tasteless flavors.
Wolf himself has been the stereotypical evil rich guy in his treatment of cast members.

sultan_knish on July 14, 2008 at 10:44 am

I remember one show they did on FGM (I am not going to spell it out since the whole idea of it makes me cringe – Google it if you don’t know what it is) where they went out of their way to make sure the viewers understood it was not a Muslim thing.

I_am_me on July 14, 2008 at 10:51 am

I’ve never watched this show. I guess after reading this I certainly will continue to avoid it like the plague.

caitlynn on July 14, 2008 at 10:57 am

The actor who played the original DA (Adam Schiff) Steven Hill (Who also played in Mission Impossible during its first year), is an Orthodox Jew. Now I wonder why he left the show.

I_am_me on July 14, 2008 at 11:07 am

Helloooo….. Are you all so quick to be offended at a perceived slighting of your race and/or religion that you can’t read properly? The article says that most of the “victims” NOT “villians” are wealthy white people. They LIMIT the number of black and Muslim victims. I’m sure most of the readers here would heartily applaud this statistic and now become great fans of the show.

Voltaire on July 14, 2008 at 11:43 am

Neat observation. Everyone seems to have read that little datum the wrong way round — if they read the article at all. In any case, what we mostly learn is that a lot of people are outraged by anything resembling a liberal bent in the media and in this case believing is seeing. Anyone who wants to check Wikipedia will find that Dick Wolf was a roomie of George W. Bush in prep school and supported Bush in both elections. In 2000, he supported and contributed to the campaign of conservative Fred Thompson.

Robert Maxwell on December 20, 2010 at 8:46 pm

#7 Good to see you talk Valley Girl lingo. On Law & Order most of the victims are white and most of the villains are white (usually wealthy). In reality while most victims are white, most perpetrators of felonies are non white.

Ripper on July 14, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Confusion here. Although you are correct in what is written, anyone who has watched the show knows that the vics are nearly always minorities, and the perps are virtually always white and privileged.
That show is so far from actual law enforcement it is stunning.
The aud for this series is most likely Leftie old white people who hate themselves and the country. I doubt that there is much minority viewership on the program.
Besides, the demo for over-the-air TV is simply awful these days.

Red Ryder on July 14, 2008 at 12:40 pm

The Law and Order shows are very well written but as Debbie says, they are politically correct to a T. The notion that whites, particularly rich white people, in real life, commit most of the brutal crimes in this country, is completely absurd. In reality, its minorities, particularly blacks, who do. But you can’t write about that without confounding liberal myths about minority victimhood and police brutality. And where minority criminals are depicted on L&O shows, they are always depicted as being in that situation to the fault of society – translation: there was a “root cause” that made them do it or the police messed up. That’s a standard rarely applied to white criminals on the shows, who are seen as getting what they deserve. I would just say two more things here: its terrific entertainment. But don’t let any one tell you the shows are based on reality or as Dick Wolf likes to say, “ripped from the headlines.” That’s the part that’s sheer fiction. In other words, the L&O universe is nothing like the one in real world America.

NormanF on July 14, 2008 at 1:15 pm

In light of what you and others have said, exactly how are these shows “well-written”?

Red Ryder on July 14, 2008 at 1:27 pm

to quote another poster: In America this is called Anti-Reality television.
One thing I find so objectionable is the recycling of character actors. They go from being slimeballs to virtuous liberal saints. Diane Neal, Jerry Orbach, just to name a few.

Jewel Atkins on July 14, 2008 at 1:30 pm

People know what’s going on in American entertainment and that’s been going on for a long time and lately its gotten a lot more blatant. The few conservative critics like Debbie happen to remind us not to take literally what we see on the big screen and TV tube. As long people do, they can take Hollywood’s fare for it really is: a diversion from life.

NormanF on July 14, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Red Ryder- the shows are well written in that it seems like the episodes are inspired by real life examples. You became aware of that after you get half away through a L&O show. Of course the perps, victims and what the police and prosecution do is nothing like it originally was since everything had to be changed to remain politically correct. So once you take into account the biases, you know it can never be a faithful reproduction of what has happened in real life. Any L&O episode will tell you that and I should add that after awhile, it gets boring rather than diverting since one knows who the police are going to get. And if real life was like its depicted on L&O, we wouldn’t have any crime in America since on the shows, the crime is solved by the time the closing credits are ready to roll.

NormanF on July 14, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Not to change the subject….if you think this show is a lot of liberal dribble just watch an episode of ER.

formerwm on July 14, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Law & Order reminds me of a case in June 1986 in NYC when a model named Marla Hanson had her face slashed by two thugs hired by her landlord (Steven Roth) because she resisted his sexual advances. Anyway Marla Hanson went to court to testify against the two thugs (one or both of whom were black)and the defense lawyer the vicious black racist Alton Maddox later of Tawana Brawley infamy (since disbarred) badgered her with a lot of racist questions. They made a TV movie about the case “The Marla Hanson Story” in 1991 only now the defense lawyer was played by a white man. What a shocka!

Ripper on July 14, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Another criticism (legitimate I might add) of L & O is that they place far too much credence on the D.A. and Defense Attorney’s closing arguments in determining whether the defendant will be found guilty or innocent. Most juries have made up their minds long before the closing arguments.

Ripper on July 14, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Just one more L & O criticism. The police captain on L & O (S. Epatha Merkeson) playing “Anita Van Buren” is as believable as a police captain as Hugh Grant is. However she is a woman and she is black so she is the right type for p.c. TV. I cannot imagine her giving orders to a “Lenny Briscoe”, “Mike Logan”, or “Eddie Green” in real life. She comes across like a nice woman but someone who is more believable as Cub Scout den smother then a homicide police captain.
Speaking of “Lenny Briscoe” (the late Jerry Ohrbach) could they have been more cliched – a recovering alcoholic gumshoe who is divorced, is tuck with alimony payments and whose daughter hates him who keeps muttering “I’m too old for this business”?

Ripper on July 14, 2008 at 2:57 pm

The show is a farce. Prosecutors often direct police investigations; in reality the two sectors are independent by law and occupational-cultural disassociation. Real Motion hearings are conducted in court with lawyers pleading based on pre-submitted briefs. Except where the issue is simple, judges study briefs the day before the hearing. In Law and Order, the lawyers often meet the judge in a hallway and have an informal discussion as they walk. “Due consideration” imperatives don’t fall on Wolf’ judges.
Wolf isn’t much on civil liberties. L & O cops often discuss unlawful entries: “I think I hear exigent circumstances.” However, producers have them admitting questionable conduct, so as to advance Motion and Trial drama. In reality, cop perjury and obstruction are normal. They do it because they are quota oriented, and are performance bound to “make rates” or “clear cases.” Speaking of clearances, on one show the performance of one cop is declared to be: “12 felony arrests per month.” BS. On average, the work product of American cops is: a little over 1 convicted person per month, and 2 incarcerated persons per year. The average cop will make 25 arrests per year, and most of those are investigative detentions, notwithstanding the handcuffs and deprivations of liberty.
Further, forget the dramatic tension. Wolf breaks the Siskel and Ebert rule; if a known actor appears initially to have a minor role, as the story progresses that role will become major. Conclusions are so telegraphed in L&O that predicting outcomes becomes a parlor game.

supercargo on July 14, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Just to put in some ìperspectiveî, L&O (Iím not talking so much about the spin offs here) is supposed to be in Manhattan, which is in one of the highest income counties per captia in this country. So seeing a bunch of uber rich white people behaving badly would make sense. I think Dick Wolfís point is that the target demo for his show doesnít really care all that much about minorities (the liberal ëout of sight, I donít mindí mentality) and they basically want a pseudo intellectual soap opera, which is what I think L&O is.
Another thing though is that one comment mentioned that none of the baddies are ever leftists from the news media, show business, or academia. Actually the show regularly seems to portray people in those fields as vapid, self-absorbed and quite often, as capable of near sub human levels of depravity. From reading and seeing interviews he has given, I honestly think that Dick Wolf might believe this of Hollywood in general but sees himself as ëbetter than the restí.

Tordenvaer on July 14, 2008 at 3:36 pm

The only two good positive points I can see about L&O is it does recognize people are not born good and the dark side of human nature is a fact of human existence and a civilized society needs the law and prisons to punish people who break the law. Liberals like to think of criminals as victims in need of understanding and they don’t have to take responsibility for the consequences of the conduct. L&O insists people have to accept that when they are convicted of a crime.

NormanF on July 14, 2008 at 3:44 pm

TV is fantasyland. Nothing is like real life. Even the “reality” shows are fake. So, next time you watch CSI:Miami, look for some Cubans. Not many on the show, but I understand there are quite a few there in real life. Most of the “perps” are blond, blue-eyed and rich. CSI:NY, same thing. We know few cities are as diverse as NYC, but you wouldn’t know it from watching this show. I like the show, but it’s the same thing as it’s cousin, CSI:Miami. Most of the perps are white folk. You rarely see Blacks and Hispanics on the show. Hey, maybe the real racists are the producers of these shows. Given the chance to hire and advance the careers of minority actors, they choose to use people “like themselves.” Just a thought. Haven’t watched L&O (any edition) for 3 years. Just got tired of the tired, same-ole, same-ole story lines.

I have not watched a TV since May 4 and I can’t say that I feel less informed or less entertained. Especially during an election year, I am not going to miss any of what has come to be so predictable.
If I want a laugh or some info, I’ll turn on Rush or log on here.

CapitalistGig on July 14, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Can we begin to call shows like the Law & Order brand what they really are? I believe the “Hollywood” template is an active conspiracy to propogandize against the traditional American view and ethic. These people all write and act and finance stories that denigrate the white middle class, white males, white married couples and families. They seek out characters who are reprehensible and make them mainstream so we all question ourselves. The evening news and cable news networks are no different. Most of our public school and Academe educators also preach this crap and I wonder when we will find some escape from it.

Robert on July 15, 2008 at 9:10 am

Law and Order has always done the “ripped from the headlines” type of story. They focus on the kinds of sensational cases that are atypical but capture the attention of the media. Their version of these events are naturally unrealistic (who ever prosecutes cases that quickly?), but it is an artistic impression. While true most victims and perpetrators of crime are minorities, most of the viewers of the show are white and middle class. Why wouldn’t an audience find it more interesting when they see someone victimized, normally through some outlandish scheme or event, who is within their own demographic. That’s why the streetside shooting of two white boys in suburbia garners more attention than two african americans killed in a drive-by in the inner city. BECAUSE MROE PEOPLE LIVE IN AND CARE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE IN SUBURBIA. Larger demographic=larger viewing audience=larger ratings=$$$$$. If you want tough, smart, realistic shows about crime, watch “The Wire”, or better yet, an hilarious episode of COPS. Cue the music…

Great story. Good to see guilty white libs being exposed for the dolts they are.

I can’t stand how the bad guys act like they are tortured by guilt into confessing all the time. Bad guys don’t usually have a conscience to be tortured by.

samurai on July 15, 2008 at 10:30 pm

They cast “Ice T” as a cop. This is the guy who not only has a song called “Cop Killer”, but a guy whom the cops hate so much that they boycotted providing security to his concerts. The fact that this slimy TV show would cast someone like him as a police officer, says it all.

John Harper on July 16, 2008 at 1:28 am

Just came across this from a google search. Wow.

First, she gets the quote wrong (he was talking victims, not perps), then the responses go on to agree with her (except one!)!

Idiots of a feather flock together, I guess!

I’m not a Law & Order fan, either, though it seems a lot of you are quite familiar with it, in spite of hating it? Are you too stupid to work a remote control?

Holy cow.

Is it any wonder this country is in such trouble after 8 years of idiots running the show?

“Mr. Wolf maintains this consistency is by making most of the victims wealthy white people, which he believes viewers are more interested in watching. ”

I have tried watching this show and it exactly what you say it is – the victims are white and the guilty are white

mery on January 11, 2013 at 2:50 am

Look, I find the show entertaining, but at the same time every other episode is like a social leftist’s wet dream. Homosexual couples don’t make good homes for their children, most pedophilia is an adult male with a child male, most criminals are predominantly non white, gun violence begets gun violence not by psychological results, but by access to unregistered illegally obtained firearms, most gun violence committed is in inner cities by minorities who were not around firearms in their youth, and finally, rich whites give most of us jobs, not the black tranny on Broadway.

alan on April 4, 2013 at 9:28 pm

And John, if conservatives are the idiots ruining this country, how come the media, the news, Hollywood, and 2 2/3rds of the government(not to mention how many taxpayer funded phony organizations) are controlled by leftist socialists

alan on April 4, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Wolf is trying to influence the ignorant masses that all suspects are white. Even if the perpetrator is of color, the real suspect turns out to be THE MAN. All suspect of color have some reason to have committed the crime and an attempt is made, by Wolf, to direct the blame to the MAN. White suspects are always un-repentant, irretrievable ass—–, with no reason to do what they did other than greed or some other horrible character flaw. I wish Wolf would go live with those who he so ardently protects.

Eric on April 22, 2014 at 3:49 pm

It’s true, I used to watch this show, but I quit it because of its racist undertones against white people. It’s also insulting because reality is the complete opposite of what is portrayed on the show.
