Big Brother v. St. Patrick’s Day; Luck O’the Muslims

By Debbie Schlussel

As you know, it’s St. Patrick’s Day.  I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.  The legend is that Patrick was sainted for chasing all the snakes out of Ireland.  But the reality is that, instead, Ireland is filled with extremist Muslims.  Here are the details I’ve written about in years past.  Note the old Irish joke I used to tell about Palestinian terrorists in Ireland, which has, sadly, now become reality.

Kiss Me, I’m Irish

Everyone’s Irish on St. Paddy’s Day

But St. Patrick’s Day gives another lesson in politics, this one not about Islam (yet), but about the nanny City of Detroit.  Every year, Irish-Americans and others in the Detroit area participate in a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the Corktown area, which used to be an Irish Catholic working-class neighborhood in Detroit.  The parade draws up to 100,000 people. This year’s parade was held Sunday.  But Big Brother stepped in to take away a lot of the fun:

This year, those marching in the Corktown parade are banned from passing out candy, beads or balloons. Parade chairman Michael Kelly said the new rules were put in place after city officials expressed safety concerns. . . .

Detroit Police spokesman John Roach said . . . . “Ultimately we want people to understand potential risks in throwing candy or beads, and kids darting out into the street to get them.” . . .

John Murrin, treasurer of the Knights of Equity, an Irish-Catholic fraternal group affiliated with the United Irish Societies, said he understands the safety concerns but is “disappointed.”

“I’m disappointed and frustrated,” Murrin said. “The hard part was telling my 11-year-old daughter that she couldn’t pass out candy and balloons like she’s done her entire life. She couldn’t understand why.”

“and kids darting out into the street to get them.”

It is a parade right?

don’t they block off the street to traffic or are they afraid a child might get hit by a runaway marching band?

A couple of years ago, ender, a kid was run over by a float vehicle in Florida I can’t remember exactly where, Lakeland maybe. He wasn’t even darting, He was giving out beads and stepped into the path of the float. The drivers can’t see and if a little kid gets under a flat bed loaded with beauty queens and all the decorations what chance does he have? So don’t go making smart remarks about loss of life.
Debbie, in case you haven’t noticed at the mall, kids are out of control and you can’t do anything about it. I almost got fired from Dillards a number of years ago because an out of control LITTLE GIRL came barreling towards me so overwrought she was sobbing and running at the same time. We were in an aisle between GLASS shelving. The Grandma in me instinctively put out my hands to stop her so we both wouldn’t go over taking glass with us incurring serious injury. She was with her father and when he saw me holding her arms for a second, he went ballistic. I said I was a Grandmother and I simply stopped her headlong crash into me. I was trying to protect her but no, he called my manager and lurked around watching me all evening. He demanded I be fired and wanted to call the cops to have me arrested for assault but I was too valuable and the store believed me.
The point is, parents are too self absorbed to tend their children. Children dart into streets. How else do you explain kids left to die in hot cars?

It is pretty bizarre. Detroit has a crime problem that will not go away, and they are worried about stuff like this. People die in auto accidents everyday across the United States. Does anyone seriously think that we should ban the personal non-business use of such vehicles for that reason? Being alive is a risk, as is every breath we take in. If you want to avoid such risks, the most sure fire way to is to die.

My two kids are under control because they are loved, not indulged. Limit setting is quite easy for my wife and myself.

If we really want to run this issue of safety to the inth degree, we should not leave our home but for working. It is not safe.

We must be more self reliant and keeping children safe and stop depleting liberty for the sake of a few. Safety with common sense please. A parade goes less then 2 miles per hour. The best way is to have all candy come from one sourse and in approved bags to ensure the why.

RGeorgeDunn on March 17, 2010 at 4:21 pm

i don’t get it… they got to pass out candy throughout the middle east when the WTC was attacked???

howardroark on March 17, 2010 at 5:47 pm

This was done for safety reasons? I think it has to do more of the slow process of attaching restrictions until the parade becomes history. A shame this is to say the least.

Hey Debbie,
I was wondering why you had to target Muslims, if they did nothing wrong in Ireland. I mean they didn’t do anything wrong. I work with a lot of Muslims and they’re not terrorists rather peaceful people. You shouldn’t let the actions of a couple terrorists judge almost 2 billion people. They’re are a lot of Jews, Christians, and Buddhists who commit crimes, but they don’t represent anyone of my religion, I’m Jewish like you by the way. Maybe you should stop the racism and stick with movie articles.

Hey John…what you don’t know about Islam may kill you. Get yourself educated regarding the Muslims who will NEVER treat you as an equal. We love life, they love death. What don’t you understand about that? They lie, cheat and steal in the name of promoting Islam and that is what their holy book tells them to do. Wake up man!

NOTRUMP on March 18, 2010 at 12:57 pm

John “Terrorists” A word I dont like.
Terror in this case is a tactic used by devout muslims following the eternal word of their god and the example of mohammed
never confuse a good muslim with the teachings of islam or the behaviour of their finest example to mankind– their prophet mohammed

“So don’t go making smart remarks about loss of life.”

how about not being a busy body?

thousands of parades every year and you have to bring up one where someone died. So by your standards all parades should be banned. Even when your own comment goes on to blame parental control as the problem. Lighten up, I didn’t make fun of a specific accident but of a hypothetical event that would actually be funny.

and yes being run down by a run away marching band would be funny. Seeing a marching band careen out of control and jump a curb would be hilarious as they kept the music going. No matter how many kids and puppies would be injured.

ender on March 17, 2010 at 8:21 pm

I didn’t say they should ban the parades, I said YOU shouldn’t joke about potential loss of life. I agree with the posters who say it would be wrong to ban every single thing we do for “safety reasons.” If you stop and THINK about my example of Dillards, you would see my complaint is with self absorbed parents whom no amount of legislations will correct.

    mk750 on March 18, 2010 at 6:56 am

“Seeing a marching band careen out of control and jump a curb would be hilarious as they kept the music going.”

Hell yeah. And if it was televised it would be cool if they exploded. Everything blows up on TV.

Well, if St. Paddy’s day is about silly hats & beards, it’s right up muzzy alley!

Graty Slapchop on March 17, 2010 at 10:29 pm

“the actions of a couple of terrorists”…a couple thousand maybe. debbie, perhaps the city fathers are trying to prevent a slaughter like the alumni parade from Animal House. Kevin Bacon, playing the part of Homeland Security yelling “All is well, all is well!”

thomas o'malley on March 17, 2010 at 10:42 pm

A guy had a team of horses get away from him at Cheyenne Frontier Days and they careened into a marching band. All the guy could say afterwords was, “They just kept playing.”

Hey grandma-it’s a good thing you didn’t spit on a kleenex and get the smudge off her face.

Pinandpuller on March 18, 2010 at 3:51 am

LOL, tell me about it! If I’d had time to think, I wouldn’t have touched her but it happened so fast. I couldn’t believe the reaction of the negligent dad. If it were my kid, I’d be embarrassed sure but once I calmed down and thought about it I’d understand what the sales clerk had done and thank her. Oh BTW this was my first job in the US after being out of the country for several years. Things had changed in society from 1988 til 1994 that it was hard to recognize it as the same place.

    mk750 on March 18, 2010 at 7:01 am

It seems all the traditions we grew up with and have fond memories of are being cut away and thrown to the curb. Parades, holidays, remembrances, etc. will be merely lost in history. We’ve let the entire world come in here and take over the show, force-feeding us their garbage while the traditions we built this great nation on are flushed down the tank.

This country is in for darker days ahead unless it pulls its head out of the sand.

Could the massive immigration of muslims and Africans (yes Africans, believe it or not) into Ireland and other European nations be part of an ethnic cleansing? Afterall, Ireland is the homeland of the Irish and historically has not been the homeland of muslims or Africans.

Billings on March 18, 2010 at 8:14 am

By far the largest group of immigrants to Ireland are the British and after them Polish. Africans are a tiny percentage. Most of us welcome the diversity. Ireland is a much more interesting place now than when you could go years without seeing a black face.

Kudos to you for fighting the fight and keeping a stiff upper lip. I just don’t know how you all do it. I am literally at my wits end over this administration. I had my faults with Bush of course, but this is just all so blatant and in your face I cannot take much more….every single day it is something new with this crowd, and this insurance debacle is driving me crazy I may need a break from politics in general for awhile, or start drinking on a much regular basis… god love ya for keeping the news flowing. A little off topic for this thread, but it’s all related.

Honestly, I can’t believe the extent of the PC plague that has taken root in our country. When do we rise up as Americans and put an end to this nonsense?

Parades often have floats, cars, fire engines, etc.. I think it is good to protect the children from being harmed. The moms and dads could always bring some candy for their kids. Sit a kid down with a big lollipop and some cotton candy and they’ll be too busy satisfying their sweet tooth to care about anything else. 🙂

Debbie darling your fear of Muslims is very sad. Your only hurting yourself…

peace

Elle on December 30, 2010 at 2:28 am

Um Elle, she’s (DS) alerting, waking up and educating everybody about the behavior of muslims, and Debbie speaks very fluent arabic (even though she’s not arabic/middle eastern) BTW! And Elle, do you know what happens in islamic countries? Are you aware of the honor killings, throwing acid into faces of females, stoning women for either being raped or cheating on their husband or boyfriend, intimidation, oppression or minorities, etc. And Elle, are you also aware what happens to “dhimmis” (like you Elle) in islamic countries in the middle east, they are treated as second class citizens, and also in many muslim countries, christianity, judiasim, hinduism, buddhisim, etc. are NOT practiced in their countries. WAKE. THE. HELL. UP. Elle!
